Science teachers, school administrators, educators, and the scientific community are faced with ethical controversies over animal dissection in school biology classrooms. Computer simulation has been proposed as a way of dealing with this issue. One intriguing tentative finding in previous research was that use of an interactive videodisc dissection facilitated performance on a subsequent actual dissection. The World Wide Web (WWW) is the latest in a long line of educational technologies, and the list of courses on it is growing daily. Formative evaluations would help educators enhance teaching and learning in Web-based courses. This dissertation focuses on the human-computer interaction elements of task presentation and task structure in the programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). Task presentation methods that were explored included a natural language (GE Fanuc's State Logic), and a mixed modality language (GE Fanuc's Logicmaster Relay Ladder Logic). Task Structure elements utilized in this study were linear procedural tasks and conditional branching tasks;A two-level factorial analysis of covariance determined that task presentation was a significant contributor to programming development times.
