The Academic Achievement Of Open-Admission Students And Regular-Admission Students At A Comprehensive, Independent Mid-Western University , Thomas Moyer Pursel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated relationships among admission status, standardized test scores, major area of study, and academic outcomes among college freshmen entering directly from high school. The progress of 653 students (585 regular-admission students and 68 open-admission students) was evaluated over a period of four years. In addition, differences in the predictive validity of standardized test scores and high school performance for regular-admission students and open-admission students were examined;Significant differences favoring regular-admission students were observed in grade point averages for each year studied and in graduation rates at the conclusion of four years of instruction. There were also differences favoring ...

Roles Of Field Level Agricultural Extension Workers In Nepal As Perceived By Agricultural Extension Personnel , Narayan Kunwar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

As field level agricultural extension workers in Nepal, Junior Technical Assistants (JTAs) have various roles to perform. However, the roles expected of them are not clear and specific;A study was conducted to determine the demographic characteristics of extension personnel, to determine if significant differences existed in the perceptions of various groups of extension personnel for the importance of JTAs' roles and the performance of those roles, and to determine if significant differences existed between the importance and performance of JTAs' roles as perceived by each group of extension personnel. Seven hypotheses were developed and tested in line with the ...

Spiritual Development: A Descriptive Study Of College Freshmen At A Selected Institution Of The Christian College Coalition , Alan Stevens Cureton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Historically, Christian liberal arts colleges have claimed that their graduates are different from those of other colleges because of the integration of the Christian faith with academic disciplines. However, little research has been conducted regarding spiritual development in college students at Christian colleges; The investigator used a quantitative instrument designed to ascertain levels of spiritual involvement and faith development among freshmen students at a small midwestern Christian college. The data collected were presented and analyzed descriptively; The data indicate that students attending this institution identified a concerned interest in the spiritual dimension of their lives; generally consider themselves religious in ...

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to examine a meaningful set of data from a longitudinal educational research project using univariate and multivariate methodological approaches. It was hypothesized that the multivariate analysis would provide a more in-depth and complete understanding of the underlying factors. A second purpose was designed to provide a practical, clear, and concise guide for other educational researchers to draw upon; The researcher first explored the possible relationship between teacher education graduates' teaching certification level and their adequacy ratings on 33 areas of preparation in their teacher education program. A comparison was made between the results of ...

Relationships Of Organizational Expectations And Trainer Orientations On Methods Used In Training , Kwan Eung Lee Jan 1989

Relationships Of Organizational Expectations And Trainer Orientations On Methods Used In Training , Kwan Eung Lee

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A trainer's managing behaviors in facilitating training programs were assumed to be contingent upon a variety of variables. Studies on the trainer variables suggested that a trainer's educational background, educational orientation about adult teaching, educational philosophy, and organizational climate and expectations were part of the factors affecting the trainer's teaching practice. This research examined how those variables in part or combination attributed to the trainer's preferences of training methods such as teaching arrangements and teaching techniques, and emphasis on training procedures in applying training methods. Additionally, this study investigated how a trainer's educational orientation was ...

Impacts On Socialization Of Student Teachers: An Ethnographic Study , Kathryn Rae Petersen Jan 1989

Impacts On Socialization Of Student Teachers: An Ethnographic Study , Kathryn Rae Petersen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Student teaching has been cited as a valuable component in teacher preparation but research conflicts on specific socializing influences. Some researchers argue that student teachers are predominantly socialized through prior life experiences and others argue that student teachers passively accept the norms of the institution. These two arguments suggest that socialization is unidirectional. Current socialization researchers argue that socialization occurs through an interaction effect. The purpose of this study is to describe the process through which student teachers selectively acquire the attitudes, values, beliefs, skills, and knowledge that are current in the teaching profession; The study setting is eight placement ...

An Analysis Of A Preservice Teacher Structural Equation Model Under Varying Assumptions And Measurement Conditions , Dean K. Frerichs

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to develop a structural equation model of preservice teacher variables and to examine alternative methods of testing this model under different assumptions and measurement conditions. A conceptual model was posited to examine variables related to job expectations, academic ability, pre-student teaching preparation, satisfaction with cooperating teacher, self-rated student teaching performance, and quality of teacher preparation program; From this conceptual model of preservice teacher variables, five empirical models were developed and analyzed. Models I and II utilized single indicators computed as composite means of the respective observed standardized indicators. Model I assumed variables were measured ...

College Student Involvement And Cognitive Outcomes: A Study Utilizing The Cse And The Comp , Roger K. Hadley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Recent research indicated that student involvement is related to cognitive outcomes, but more needs to be known. What kinds of involvement contribute to outcomes? Do different kinds of involvement lead to different outcomes for different students? This longitudinal study used standardized measures of involvement and cognitive outcomes to answer these questions;Eighty-eight students from three four-year campuses and one two-year campus in the Midwestern, Southern, and Eastern part of the United States took the Objective Test of the College Outcomes Measures Program (COMP) as entering students as a measure of cognitive outcomes. Two or four years later these same students ...

Use Of And Satisfaction With Two Types Of Advising Systems Among Engineering Students At Iowa State University , William Francis Jaffe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

As enrollments decline in institutions of higher education quality academic advising may help reduce student attrition. A quality advising program is one which students use and one with which they express satisfaction. In this study, the academic advising program in a college of engineering was studied, by means of a questionnaire, to describe the role of the advisor in terms of predominant patterns of student use. Another purpose was to determine which type of advising system, faculty-based or professional advisor-based, resulted in greater student use and satisfaction for specific advising needs: assistance with preregistration, class add/drop, curriculum planning, career ...
