Lighten Up Iowa: An Interdisciplinary, Collaborative Health Promotion Campaign, Ruth E. Litchfield, Joann Muldoon, Gregory Welk, Jim Hallihan, Tim Lane

In Iowa, obesity nearly doubled between 1990 (12.8%) and 2002 (22.9%). Rural areas, like Iowa, tend to have a higher prevalence of obesity and are difficult to reach with health promotion efforts. The Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Games, and Iowa State University Extension deliver Lighten Up Iowa, a friendly team competition promoting physical activity and fruit/vegetable consumption. In 2003, Lighten Up Iowa reached 1,400 teams (12,000 Iowans in 99 counties) that logged 2.6 million miles of physical activity and lost 23.5 tons of weight. Pre- and post-surveys indicate significant (p<0.05) increases in physical activity and fruit/vegetable consumption.

This research investigated the effectiveness at how the Science Writing Heuristic in the freshman chemistry laboratory for science and engineering majors at Iowa State University during the fall and spring semesters of the 2002--2003 academic year, was implemented. The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) consists of two components, writing to learn strategies and conducting the laboratory session in a student-centered, guided-inquiry fashion. Minority stress comes from "the juxtaposition of minority and dominant values and the resultant conflict with the social environment experienced by minority group members" (Meyer, 1995, p. 39). The purpose of this study was to identify the levels of explicit reflection-on-action and criteria with which teachers self-assess their teaching, and to compare these levels and criteria to classroom practices. These reflections and practices were then compared to the participants' preservice preparation to determine the extent to which strategies taught transferred to classroom practice. This study explored the development of three science teacher educators as they interacted with preservice teachers while seeking to align their practices with what they were advocating in the elementary science methods courses that they taught. Practices that were advocated by the methods instructors were consistent with research-based teaching and goals of the science education community. We investigate two plausible factors that may have affected changes in wage inequality: returns to higher education and returns to new technologies. The first two chapters examine the role of mathematics and verbal ability in estimating returns to advanced degrees. When average abilities within the major are treated as missing variables, we found that OLS estimates of returns to graduate education are underestimated. When average ability in the major is treated as part of an endogenous decision regarding whether to attend post-graduate degree programs, we find that students in majors with higher average mathematics skills are less likely to progress ...

Academic earmarks identified by the U.S. Congress through attachments to funding bills have represented a sizeable and growing revenue stream to institutions of higher education, yet little has been determined about the impacts this funding has on these institutions or the products of these institutions. A study was defined to test the argument that academic earmarks provided support for institutions to build research and development (R&D) infrastructure necessary for competition with peers. The population of interest was all U.S. public research institutions, and the principal research question was whether academic earmarks provided these institutions with increased academic R&D infrastructure as indicated by changes in R&D expenditures between 1993 and 2002. Structural equation path analysis was used to test the relationships among institutional control variables, total academic earmarks received, change in R&D expenditures, and institutional peer rankings over ten years.;The study demonstrated evidence that the practice of congressional academic earmarking at public research institutions did not have an effect on change in R&D expenditures or an effect on peer rankings. The purpose of this research was to explore preschool teachers' understanding of make-believe play in order to aid understanding and enhance further use of teachers as informants in research on children's play. Participants included preschool teachers (n = 10) and faculty members ( n = 3) who teach early childhood educators. This study explored the impact of family relationship dynamics on college student adjustment measures for 61 first-year first-generation college students. Students volunteered to complete a self-report questionnaire during their second semester of college, measuring psychological coping, family relationships, and academic, social, personal-emotional, and overall college adjustment. Examining The Relationship Between Supplemental Instruction (Si) And Student Retention At A Doctoral Extensive Institution , Kari A. Hensen

This study tracked 3,286 students over a five-year period who were enrolled in entry-level biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics courses offering SI in the fall 1999 to see if they were retained or graduated at a Midwestern doctoral extensive institution and identified which predictor variables (demographic, achievement, and level of SI participation) most significantly predicted student retention or graduation. Chi-square analysis, based on two-way contingency tables indicated that SI participants are retained at higher rates than non-SI participants while having lower mean ACT composite scores and fewer semesters of high school preparation in calculus, chemistry, and physics. The primary purpose of this dissertation was to describe the nature of early field experience (EFE) in agricultural teacher education programs nationally. The dissertation was divided into three papers. The first paper was a descriptive census study of all active agricultural teacher education programs (N=82). The results of the study provide a general profile of EFE in agricultural teacher education. EFE is a required component of teacher education and offered multiples times.
