Three years ago when we were breaking ground for the construction of our first two dormitories, I said it was fitting and, indeed, serendipitous that the Academy should be located in Aurora, because the word Aurora is Latin for dawn.

The need to understand how the universe works is fundamental to human nature. It is also essential for safely managing the human future; but foolishly, we have designed a society based on science and technology in which hardly anyone understands science and technology. This is a clear prescription for disaster.
Our future depends on producing and encouraging highly competent, ethically responsible young scientists, as well as a much greater scientific literacy in the general public.
The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois, is dedicated to meeting this challenge...

Dr. Leon M. Lederman, Director of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois, has been named one of three recipients of the 1988 Nobel Prize for physics. Sharing the prize with Dr. Lederman are Dr. Melvin Schwartz and Dr. Jack Steinberger. The three have been cited for their discovery, in 1962, of a second neutrino, an elementary subatomic particle. Fermilab is operated by the Universities Research Association, Inc., under contract with the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

Good Morning. As you know, we are now at an extremely critical juncture in the history of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The Board of Trustees and several members of the Academy administrative staff are in Springfield today, and our students and faculty will be here on November 5, 1987, to talk with legislators and to answer their inquiries about why the Academy is seeking a supplemental appropriation of $3.2 million during this legislative session.

Thank you.
For many months, the Academy and the Fund staff have looked forward to this day; not only because we are officially and formally dedicating the Academy's Information Resource Center to the memory of an unusual and remarkable woman, Leto M. Furnas, but also to us, the Furnas Foundation's commitment to and investment in the Academy is a tangible symbol of the significance of the Academy's mission and the importance of this school to Illinois Education.

There is a widely recognized perception that the nation is facing a crisis in fulfilling its need for citizens trained in the fields of science, mathematics, and technology. In particular, the State of Illinois has an obligation toward this national issue and to its own need to develop the human resources that are so intimately coupled with economic leadership in a post-industrial society. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is prepared to address this very broad challenge through the nurturing of creative excellence in students of science and mathematics.
