Imsa Core Competencies: Micro-Credentials For Teacher Development, Angela Rowley

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy has created a system of micro-credentials for K-12 teachers to promote best practices in STEM education and to promote IMSA’s core competencies of inquiry-based, problem-centered, competency-driven, and Integrated STEM teaching and learning. In this session, these competencies will be demonstrated as effective pedagogy to differentiate for more advanced learners within the same classroom as other students or can be used independently with groups of gifted students to promote deep thinking and provide challenge.

Learning Opportunities 2021/2022, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Course Catalogs

The graduation requirements of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy are established by the IMSA Board of Trustees. Each semester students must take a minimum of five academic courses (2.5 credits) for a letter grade (not Pass/Fail) not including Fine Arts, Wellness, SIR, Internship, and Independent Study. Students may enroll in a maximum of nine courses each semester including academic courses, Fine Arts, Wellness, SIR, Internship, and Independent Study. The College and Academic Counselor approves enrollment for students in all courses and experiences. Only courses taken for a letter grade will count towards graduation credit.

Equity and Excellence Scorecard

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research, has developed the Equity and Excellence Scorecard. The Equity and Excellence Scorecard is a process to measure the progress of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) Equity and Excellence Policy. This Scorecard was established through an intensive process which included the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of institutional data related to diversity, equity, and inclusion utilizing an array of assessments aligned with each outcome strategy identified within the Equity and Excellence Policy.

The IMSA Archives, housed in the Leto M. Furnas Information Resource Center, serves to collect and preserve materials relating to the history and ethos of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. The Archives includes both special and general collections with materials about IMSA’s establishment, led by Dr. Leon Lederman and Governor James Thompson. There are materials about the Academy’s opening in the fall of 1986 and its development since, as well as about its ideas and programs and how they evolved. 2021 Diversity Climate Survey, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Resources

In March 2021, a survey regarding diversity and school climate was administered by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and inclusion. This survey was adapted from the National Climate Survey developed by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). There were a total of 551 survey responses, 48 of which were removed due to incomplete survey responses. Of the remaining 503 authentic responses, there were 182 Sophomores, 156 Juniors, 147 Seniors, and 18 that did not indicate their grade level. Below is a summary of the major results from the survey.

Equity and Excellence Scorecard

The STEM Education Equity Analysis Tool is used by schools to self-evaluate their equity in STEM teaching and learning, with an emphasis on graduating students who are prepared for and excited about engaging in STEM careers. The STEM Education Equity Analysis Tool, created by the Great Lakes Equity Center (i.e., MAP Center), was administered as part of the development of IMSA’s Equity and Excellence scorecard via Qualtrics.
