This research was conducted in order to determine whether Grand Valley’s Greek life atmosphere is stereotypical of Greek life around the country, as portrayed in the media, or if the reality is better than the perception. 179 responses were collected from current Grand Valley State University members of Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association organizations to determine whether their reality of their organizations is accurate compared to the perception of their organizations.

Student Engagement: What Is The Best Way To Motivate Students In The Secondary Classroom?, Michiah Arguello Dec 2018

Student Engagement: What Is The Best Way To Motivate Students In The Secondary Classroom?, Michiah Arguello

Honors Projects

In the secondary education classroom, the question often arises: How do we engage our students? Often, we are faced with heads down on desks, glassy eyes, and students who don’t remember content taught to them the day before. How can we engage them? How can we motivate them to want to learn?

In this study, I will examine five procedures determined by educators to enhance student engagement. In each section, I will discuss the procedure, discuss what the procedure’s steps are and how to approach it, and share a way I have utilized this procedure and reflect on its effectiveness. …

Bibliotherapy In The Classroom: Integrating Mental Health Into An English Language Arts Classroom, Kristy L. Mcpherson-Leitz

Honorable Mentions

An increasing number of students come to school each day with unaddressed mental health concerns and social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. Schools need to provide more interventions for these students to help ensure their success both in and out of the classroom. This project explores this need, along with the history of adolescent mental health and the current interventions schools employ to combat it. It then provides research that proposes bibliotherapy as a response to students’ mental health concerns, discussing its history, benefits, and classroom applications. The project culminates in a curriculum framework for integrating a biblioguidance program into a …

The Impacts, Implementation, And Sustainability Of Service Learning In The Classroom, Amber Gerrits Aug 2018

The Impacts, Implementation, And Sustainability Of Service Learning In The Classroom, Amber Gerrits

Honors Projects

This honors senior project focuses on service-learning in the classroom. Specifically, it uncovers the benefits, harms, and common potential challenges that service learning educators face when implementing community engagement activities in their schools and classrooms. The three areas surrounding this pedagogy research were: (1) impacts of the practice, (2) logistical implementation in the classroom of such projects, and (3) a look into how to suitably sustain this type of involvement for students in a post K-12 education setting.

To ascertain the answers about the impacts of service-learning, literature was compiled into a review, which unpacked terminology and answered the big …

Speakup: The Power Of Writing And Turning Toward Trouble With Young People, James E. Fredricksen, Amanda Micheletty, Nicholas Darlinton Aug 2018

Speakup: The Power Of Writing And Turning Toward Trouble With Young People, James E. Fredricksen, Amanda Micheletty, Nicholas Darlinton

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

When a group of rural teens meet regularly out-of-school to write for social change in their communities, they inquire into those recent moments when they did or did not choose to speak up. This article describes some of the conceptual tools and practical classroom implications for three teachers who participate with SpeakUP. In particular, this piece argues that when young people turn toward trouble together, specifically when they do or do not decide to speak up, they can identify their assumptions and expectations, notice how power is working in both visible and invisible ways, and consider multiple possibilities for future …

University Libraries Equity & Inclusion Committee White Paper, Janelle Yahne, Samantha Minnis, Annie Bélanger, Jacklyn Rander, Matthew Reidsma, Gayle Schaub, Jennifer Torreano

Library Reports and Communication

By Fall 2017, ULEIC, and the task force before it, had been successful in bringing training opportunities to the attention of Libraries faculty and staff. However, the committee was struggling with defining its scope in relation to the work of Faculty Development and Support Committee (FDSC) and Department Heads. Collaborating with the Dean, it was decided to move forward with a co-creation facilitation, which would engage all members of ULEIC, to define:

  • The vision/purpose for the committee
  • It's relationships and partnerships with other library and campus groups
  • The desired outcomes
  • A new charge
  • A workplan

This report summarizes the findings …

Understanding Dibels: Purposes, Limitations, And Alignment Of Literacy Constructs To Subtest Measures, Rebecca Lynn Garvelink Aug 2018

Understanding Dibels: Purposes, Limitations, And Alignment Of Literacy Constructs To Subtest Measures, Rebecca Lynn Garvelink

Honorable Mentions

DIBELS Next is frequently used as a universal screening and progress monitoring tool within a Response to Intervention (RTI) framework. Unfortunately, some misguided educational professionals are not utilizing the assessments as they have been intended, resulting in defective instructional practices and faulty decision-making. In order for DIBELS to be used effectively, teachers must have advanced knowledge regarding assessment practices, understand data analysis and interpretation, and deliver instruction that can positively influence the reading development of at-risk learners. The intent of this project is to provide educators with an understanding of the appropriate uses and limitations of DIBELS. Additionally, this project …

If We Are To Believe In America, Mitchell Nobis Aug 2018

If We Are To Believe In America, Mitchell Nobis

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

Abstract: Many school districts call on teachers to engage in culturally responsive teaching and social-emotional learning, but at the same time, teachers are often told to remain apolitical. This narrative essay argues that English language arts teachers must consciously and carefully undertake political pedagogy because it is impossible not to do so. Everything is political, including ethical teaching.

Imagination And Empathy: Reframing U.S.-Mexico Border Crossing Narratives, Briana Asmus, Emma Antel Aug 2018

Imagination And Empathy: Reframing U.S.-Mexico Border Crossing Narratives, Briana Asmus, Emma Antel

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

Empathy is an emotional state that allows us to feel what another person is feeling, but can it be taught? This article argues that while we may not be able to teach empathy itself, teachers can try to expand the imaginations of students through the use of young adult literature about border crossing. The intent is to help students who have not experienced border crossing becoming more empathetic toward those who have. By exploring how border crossing narratives challenge dominant misconceptions formed on deficit narratives, and by offering critically-relevant resources grounded in YA texts about border crossing, we will argue …

Scholastic Liberation: Schools' Impact On African American Academic Achievement, Aaron M. Johnson Aug 2018

Scholastic Liberation: Schools' Impact On African American Academic Achievement, Aaron M. Johnson

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

This article addresses some of the factors that contribute to low achievement observed in African American students. It is common that either schools or school districts are unable to fix the problem or they are unaware about how the beliefs and attitudes about African American students can contribute to their low performance in school. Furthermore, this article encourages school institutions to examine themselves and change school environments to align to the identities of African American students. African American students must be liberated from negative assumptions about them and to do that, individuals and the institution of school as a whole, …

Daily Oral Language, The Bell Tolls For Thee: A Critique Of Daily Sentence-Editing Exercises, Karen Pezzetti Aug 2018

Daily Oral Language, The Bell Tolls For Thee: A Critique Of Daily Sentence-Editing Exercises, Karen Pezzetti

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

For decades, experts have argued that effective grammar instruction must occur within the context of students’ authentic reading and writing processes. Despite this mandate, however, many teachers continue to use daily sentence-editing exercises like Daily Oral Language (DOL) with their secondary ELA students. Here, I argue that ELA teachers must abandon daily-sentence editing routines on three counts: first, these exercises do not help students become better writers; second, they implicitly communicate several dangerous messages about writing and revision; and, third, they are particularly harmful for speakers of stigmatized dialects of English. The article concludes with a short list of guiding …

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow May 2018

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow

Presentations

In a “post-truth” society how do we sustain an informed citizenry, the underpinning of our democracy? What news is “fake” and which facts are “alternative”? Crucially, how do we educate students to evaluate the information they encounter in a variety of contexts and disciplines? How can librarians take the lead in teaching that "authority is constructed and contextual"? This session offers some ideas culled from outreach and contact opportunities around campus during the last year [2017].

“All The Kids We Are Most Concerned About”: Putting The At-Risk At Greater Risk By Teaching To The Common Core, Brian White, Lindsy Matteoni May 2018

“All The Kids We Are Most Concerned About”: Putting The At-Risk At Greater Risk By Teaching To The Common Core, Brian White, Lindsy Matteoni

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

A major, stated goal of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for the English Language Arts (ELA) is to provide equal, quality education in literacy for all students in order to reduce opportunity gaps and to prepare high school graduates of all backgrounds and all levels of ability for the demands of college and career. The authors of the CCSS claim that the ELA Standards raise the literacy bar for all students without either constituting a literacy curriculum or dictating literacy pedagogy. However, in both their publications and their public presentations, the CCSS authors have consistently denigrated certain teaching strategies …

Even with weeks of building a classroom community and deliberate instructional scaffolding, students may not engage in thoughtful peer review. One teacher discovers how he must place a deep, intentional value on the feedback itself—and the writers who provided it to one another.

What Will You March For?, Erinn Bentley, Madison Workman May 2018

What Will You March For?, Erinn Bentley, Madison Workman

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

Every single day people in this country are advocating – from protesting racism, to fighting for or against legislation, to holding large scale marches in Washington, D.C., to posting a simple Tweet. In this article, two educators will describe how they transformed a "traditional" research paper into a project focused on real-world advocacy. In this project, students analyzed effective persuasive writing in a variety of mediums, conducted research on a topic of personal interest, and composed both a traditional research paper and a protest medium focused on their chosen topic.
