Assessing Predictors Of Work Engagement In Full-Time Undergraduate Students With Part-Time Jobs, Megan Wertheimer Jan 2015

Assessing Predictors Of Work Engagement In Full-Time Undergraduate Students With Part-Time Jobs, Megan Wertheimer

Honors Projects

Past research has shown that work engagement is beneficial for employees and employers. It is linked with performance, job satisfaction, motivation, employee health, and well-being. We tested whether social-support, conscientiousness, generalized self-efficacy, and work/school congruency would be predictive of work engagement of full-time undergraduate students at Grand Valley State University. Findings showed that work/school congruency and perceived organizational support significantly predict work engagement. These results have implications for how student workers and their employers should seek to increase engagement.

Undocumented Latino College Students And Identity Development: A Qualitative Analysis Of Undocumented Latino College Students’ Movement Towards Developing Purpose (Thesis), Theresa D. Lyon

Award Winners

Undocumented Latino college students face numerous legal, social, and financial barriers as they attempt to pursue a postsecondary degree. The psychosocial stressors that accompany being labeled as an undocumented immigrant put these students at risk of disengaging from their postsecondary education as they face limited career options and social rejection. Researchers have noted the psychosocial development that occur as students transition to an adult identity, yet little research has been done on how undocumented Latino college students navigate barriers to their identity develop and attempt to define their purpose as not only college students, but members of U.S. Society. This …

Reader’S Identity: How Identity And Literacy Can Work Together For Student Success In Middle School (Project), Tonya Kay Jesweak Jan 2015

Reader’S Identity: How Identity And Literacy Can Work Together For Student Success In Middle School (Project), Tonya Kay Jesweak

Honorable Mentions

Reading is an essential skill for life. When students come to classrooms without an identity as a reader, teachers must engage and motivate students to read and take on a reading identity. This is especially true for students who have special needs or struggling readers. As teachers, we need to be able to draw on the identity of our students to engage and motivate them to read. Teachers must look at the classroom environment and ensure it is conducive to creating a community of readers. Choice must be provided to students. Being able to choose what they read, will benefit …

Restore: Bringing Awareness To Food Insecurity And Food Justice At Grand Valley State University, Amanda Anderson, Jenna Hielkema, Skyelar Lenderink, Ryan Marshall

Undergraduate Research

As food insecurity is becoming a factor among many college students, campus food pantries are opening across the country. ReStore is a food pantry at Grand Valley State University, created in April 2009 to help students who are not able to afford food or are unable to get to the local supermarket. The number of these students is alarming. Statistics show 25 percent of students, at the University of California at San Diego, skip meals due to not having money to buy food. ReStore is an asset to GVSU where it helps reduce food insecurity on campus. Campus food pantries …

Personal accounts addressing real-life experiences are a testament to humanity, and allow future generations to act and improve upon them. Currently, large cities are facing malnutrition and are often labeled “food deserts” (Walker et al., 2012). While restaurants and convenient stores are bountiful in large cities, the variety of food they offer is not. Access of West Michigan is an organization providing workshops, simulations, and programs to educate the general public on the importance of health and nutrition. In the present paper, we address the challenge to further educate and inspire community members to get involved and allow Access to …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability

Through a Grand Valley State University course on “Wicked Problems in Sustainability”, our team was formed focusing on energy efficiency. Inefficient energy within our homes is one of the biggest culprits in unsustainable energy use; “The amount of energy wasted by 75,000 average American homes in a single year is equal to the waste that occurred in the 2010 BP Oil Spill” (erc-co.org). Looking at more energy efficient ways of living, we explored Earthships. “The Earthship is the epitome of sustainable design and construction. No part of sustainable living has been ignored in this ingenious building” (earthship.com). As a design …
