Improving Reading Compliance And Quiz Scores Through The Use Of Reading Guides, Judith Longfield, Trent W. Maurer
Improving Reading Compliance And Quiz Scores Through The Use Of Reading Guides, Judith Longfield, Trent W. Maurer
Centers for Teaching Excellence Staff Presentations
Questions & Rationale: This session will present an inquiry into student learning as measured by reading compliance and quiz scores. Students’ reading compliance has declined substantially over the past 30 years from over 80% to less than 20% (Burchfield & Sappington, 2000). Even in textbook-reliant introductory courses, students read less than 1/3 of the assigned pages (Gurung & Martin, 2011), and reading compliance significantly predicts exam scores and final grades (Sappington et al., 2002). Students who have not completed the readings are unprepared for class activities based on that material, which makes it difficult for instructors to move beyond content-delivery …

Job Satisfaction In School Psychology Graduate Preparation: A Pilot Study, P. Dawn Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, Christine C. Hinman
Georgia Educational Researcher
This pilot study investigated the status of job satisfaction among school psychology faculty with the hope of gaining insight in to factors that may encourage doctoral-level graduates to pursue jobs in academia. A second purpose of the study was to discover areas of improvement in job satisfaction to support current faculty members in continuing in their chosen careers. Finally, the study sought to establish the reliability of a job satisfaction instrument for use in larger-scale studies. A total of 94 school psychology faculty members in specialist-level and/or doctoral-level National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)-approved programs completed an author-designed survey. The …

Using A Pedagogical Content Knowledge Assessment To Inform A Middle Grades Mathematics Teacher Preparation Program, Woong Lim, Paula Guerra
Using A Pedagogical Content Knowledge Assessment To Inform A Middle Grades Mathematics Teacher Preparation Program, Woong Lim, Paula Guerra
Georgia Educational Researcher
This study provided a springboard for teacher preparation evaluation studies by examining what content and pedagogical content knowledge mathematics pre-service teachers demonstrated in the 4 – 8 mathematics teacher preparation program at an urban research university. Twenty nine pre-service students participated in an assessment called Diagnostic Mathematics Assessments for Middle School Teachers. The study found that pre-service teachers displayed the highest scores for Memorized/Factual Knowledge, followed by Conceptual Understanding, Reasoning/Problem Solving, and Pedagogical Content Knowledge. Pre-service teachers had higher Memorized/Factual Knowledge than Pedagogical Content Knowledge. The pre-service teachers’ overall content knowledge was not strong, and the two lowest-performing content knowledge …

Course Design In An Integrated First-Year Honors Sequence: Service Learning, Scaffolded Research, & Faculty Collaboration, Jerri J. Kropp, Trent W. Maurer
School of Human Ecology Faculty Presentations
Presentation given at Pre-ISSOTL Council on Undergraduate Research Symposium.
In this presentation, participants will learn about a collaboration of two professors working with a cohort of 15 students in a year-long integrated sequence first-year Honors course. Both semesters of the course center around the theme of animals in the lives of children, families, and communities. In the first semester, the course focuses more narrowly on animal-assisted therapies. In the second semester, the course focuses more broadly on global and diversity issues. As part of this course, students must complete both 25 hours of service learning and a research project. Students …

A Comparison Of Student Academic Motivations Across Three Course Disciplines, Trent W. Maurer, Deborah Allen, Delena Bell Gatch, Padmini Shankar, Diana Sturges
A Comparison Of Student Academic Motivations Across Three Course Disciplines, Trent W. Maurer, Deborah Allen, Delena Bell Gatch, Padmini Shankar, Diana Sturges
School of Human Ecology Faculty Publications
Intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of undergraduate students enrolled in human anatomy and physiology, physics, and nutrition courses were explored with course discipline-specific adapted versions of the Academic Motivation Scale. Information on students’ study habits and efforts, and final course grades were also collected. Results revealed the adapted versions of the Academic Motivation Scale had comparable reliabilities to previous investigations, significant differences in motivations across the students enrolled in the three courses and significant influences of motivation on academic behaviors and course performance.
