Evaluating The Quality Of Pre-Service Preparation For Teachers In Regard To Culturally Responsive Teaching For English Language Learners, Brooke Langowski

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This paper will focus on a study about culturally responsive teaching and English Language Learners. Specifically, this paper will evaluate pre-service and early service teachers and their ability to provide culturally responsive teaching to their English Language-Learning students. There will be three different subtopics, which will pertain to comfort levels with culturally responsive teaching, creating a culturally responsive classroom environment, and reflecting on pre-service training. This topic is extremely important because much of the research on culturally responsive teaching indicates a disconnect between teachers and their English Language Learners, however, it is vital that students feel comfortable and at ease …

Supporting Students With Disabilities At Elizabethtown College Through Universal Design, Grace Hardy

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

This study will tackle the issues surrounding the transition to post-secondary education for students with disabilities. Transition for any individual is often challenging. For students with disabilities, transition can be even more stressful. When students with disabilities transition to post-secondary education, they may no longer receive the accommodations they had in high school (Abreu et al.,2016). While it is important for students to be educated of the disability services offered at their institution, it is equally important that students are comfortable communicating their disability related needs. When students are accommodated through Universal Design, a proactive approach to planning that addresses …

Writing Priorities Across Academic Disciplines, Ashley Conway

Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)

This project examines the writing priorities of varied disciplines at Elizabethtown College to better understand what they value in student writing. A survey sent to faculty collected discipline-specific writing concerns and information about writing requirements beyond foundational courses. It also gathered thoughts on how EN100, Etown’s introductory English composition course, supports or fails upper-level writing. Follow-up interviews were conducted with select faculty. Faculty responded that sentence mechanics errors, paragraphs that lack unity or feel disorganized, failure to find effective sources when needed, and lack of clarity at the word or sentence level were the most problematic common writing errors when …

The Effect Of Sentence Diagramming On A Middle Level Learner's Composition, Alyssa J. Van Lenten Jan 2020

The Effect Of Sentence Diagramming On A Middle Level Learner's Composition, Alyssa J. Van Lenten

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Sentence diagramming, a dated form of instruction used in grammar classes beginning in the late 1800s, involves drawing lines and shapes to represent the grammatical structure of language. Wildly popular before the 1960s, the practice has since been eliminated from the national English/Language Arts standards due to its isolation from composition instruction. Haussamen (2003) reports that grammar instruction, such as sentence diagramming, completely separate from composition instruction, has no effect on students’ writing skills. Despite the history of sentence diagramming, there are a very recent few sparks of interest in sentence diagramming in education across the United States (Wilson, 2017). …

The Most Effective Teaching Strategies For At Risk Students With Mathematical Learning Disabilities, Katelyn Mowery Apr 2019

The Most Effective Teaching Strategies For At Risk Students With Mathematical Learning Disabilities, Katelyn Mowery

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

What are the most effective teaching strategies and assistive technology to support at risk students who have mathematical learning disabilities? This was the question my thesis revolved around. The problems relating to this question are the lack in definitions for at risk as well as mathematical learning disabilities and that there is no research of the overlap of these two populations. To find this overlap, I researched the best strategies for at risk students and the best for students with mathematical disabilities, and I compiled the strategies that overlapped. I thought that since they are effective for both populations, these …

Un Libro Para Mí/A Book For Me: Spanish/English Bilingual Literature In Early Childhood Education, Kayla Hall Apr 2019

Un Libro Para Mí/A Book For Me: Spanish/English Bilingual Literature In Early Childhood Education, Kayla Hall

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

With the increase of immigration in the United States, the Spanish speaking population is rapidly growing (Daly, 2018). According to the United States Census Bureau (2015), the Hispanic population of 55 million makes up 17% of the total population and is projected to grow to 119 million by 2060. Approximately 23.5% of the 55 million are elementary and high school students (United States Census Bureau, 2015). With this, there is a strong necessity to address both the needs of Spanish speaking students and preparing non-speaking Spanish students to effectively communicate in the real word.

Teacher Perceptions Of Their Ability To Teach In Inclusive Classrooms, Matthew T. Vancleef Apr 2019

Teacher Perceptions Of Their Ability To Teach In Inclusive Classrooms, Matthew T. Vancleef

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The number of students with special needs participating in general education classrooms has increased dramatically in the past two decades. Despite this growth, colleges and universities across the United States still neglect to teach general education teacher candidates about inclusive practices for their respective content areas. Inclusive practices in education refer to those which seek to include students with special needs – mild or profound – in the general education classroom, curriculum, and experience. Inclusive practices are required by federal law. As a result, a master’s research project was developed wherein general education teachers at a south-central Pennsylvania middle school …

Diversity In Children's Literature, Kendra Fix Apr 2019

Diversity In Children's Literature, Kendra Fix

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Teachers have the opportunity to make small, yet important decisions to incorporate materials and methods in their current classrooms to support students who are underrepresented, and to minimize the disconnect between the changing student population and the teacher population. While there are programs, websites, and statements about these materials, one of the easiest implementations for current teachers is through the books in classroom libraries. In 1990, Rudine Sims Bishop described books to be windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors for young people. Children need to see themselves reflected in books like a mirror. On the other hand, children need books …

Becoming Feelings Detectives: A Curriculum Designed To Build Empathy In Students With High- Incidence Disabilities, Kathryn Niznansky

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Research indicates that many students with special needs have greater difficulty mastering social skills than their typically-developing peers (Wiley & Silperstein, 2015). Strong social skills are critical to positive school and life outcomes for students, making social skills deficits even more alarming for children with disabilities (CASEL, 2019). This curriculum aims to foster empathy in students with special needs in kindergarten through grade two by providing direct instruction and practice in social skills. Specific social skills addressed in the curriculum include: naming feelings, greeting others, demonstrating active listening behaviors, and demonstrating sharing behaviors. Through children's books, role playing, and authentic …

The Gap In Professional Development : What Types Of Professional Development Opportunities Are Available To Teachers On Technology Integration And Do These Opportunities Incorporate Best Practices On Teacher In-Service Training And Support?, Rebekah Kroll

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In the 21st century, technology is consistently changing and has become ever-present in education. A teacher’s knowledge of technology is imperative to their pedagogy in order to encourage student-centered learning and provide meaningful and engaging experiences to the students. Technology knowledge on its own will not improve classroom learning. Preparation must be present so that the teachers can support student learning with technological enhancements. Many studies have shown that technology professional development opportunities for teachers are ill suited to produce adequate understanding that can assist teachers in becoming intelligent users of technology. With the rapid expansion of technology, teachers must …

Creating A Multiplication Pedagogical Toolkit For Upper Elementary Mathematics Educators, Amy E. Lieberman

Education: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

All elementary school students can be described as developing learners, each with unique learning styles. The wide variety of ways that students learn presents upper elementary school educators with both opportunities and challenges related to how they should best teach multiplication to their students. Students often have difficulties conceptualizing and engaging with multiplication and thus may benefit from having multiple different strategies to choose from to support their learning of multiplication. When teachers provide students with various ways of learning multiplication, they recognize that not all students learn the same way and students should have options in how they learn. …
