The Practicum: Present And Future : Report On The National Conference On Teacher Education, Perth, Western Australia, 18-22 August 1975, Mount Lawley College Of Advanced Education

Research outputs pre 2011

In Western Australia concern had been expressed among those involved in the professional preparation of teachers that there was a tendency to de-emphasize the practical components of courses in favour of the more theoretical academic disciplines.

There was a view expressed, perhaps rather parachially, that Western Australia, disadvantaged by distance for on-going communication between institutions, also appeared to be used very sparingly as a venue for conferences on education.

With this in mind College staff, early in 1974, decided to explore the possibility of mounting a national conference in Perth with the practicum of teacher education as its theme. A …

Health education is a process which effects changes in the health practices of people and in the knowledge and attitudes related to such changes. Education is an internal process for the individual concerned. He educates himself, even though his education is assisted by such means as contacts with health workers, appeals directed to him, information made available, clarification of issues, alternatives, and consequences as a basis for a rational choice. Education thus places responsibility on the individual and is essentially different from a compliance approach. It involves motivation, communication and decision-making. Planned education must take into account the relevant knowledge …

Broggies On The Playground : Some Approaches To Creative Writing, Churchlands Teachers College

Research outputs pre 2011

This is the second booklet of children's writing - and some approaches to teaching it - to be produced by this College. Once again all the writing comes from children at the Churchlands Primary School and the lessons were taken by members of an elective group.

There are examples of work from grades four to seven.

The length of each teaching period was only half an hour so there was little opportunity for students to re-write and improve on their first efforts. However, that particular insight which seems to be the prerogative of children is evident to some extent in …

Survey Of Education Of Aboriginal Children In Selected Western Australian Schools : (Preliminary Survey), C. Makin, D. Ibbotson

Research outputs pre 2011

Information was sought late in 1972 about problems encountered by teachers in schools with a fairly high proportion of Aboriginal children. For this purpose a questionnaire was designed to elicit information about the school situation, the surrounding community, enrolment, age and experience of the teaching staff and actual pedagogical problems encountered and methods of dealing with them. Another principle aim was to ascertain the extent to which the curiculum had been adapted to local situations and to determine what implications this might have for pre-service and in-service training.

Social Science Source Book, Colin J. Marsh

Research outputs pre 2011

During 1970, first year students at Mount Lawley Teachers' College undertook a course entitled. An Introduction to the Social Sciences. Courses in Social Science and Social Studies are not new, having been tried with varying degrees of success in other states of Australia and in overseas countries. However, in the course at this college, a multidiscipline approach has been planned, with Metropolitan Perth as the focal point of the study.

Too often, students enter a teachers' college with a 'wad' of factual knowledge about History or Economics or Geography. In the hustle and bustle of preparing for external examinations, they have …
