This article reports the results for the first cycle of an action research study about a district-university partnership. Two district facilitators and two university facilitators co-constructed a principal preparation program for an innercity school district to help prepare the next generation of building leaders. Twenty-two students participated in the 15-month nontraditional program. The study found that in preparing first-time school leaders, the most helpful experiences were those that developed self-understanding and readiness for the role change. New instructional techniques and the full-time residency facilitated this learning. It also found that the partnership, though providing new and exciting opportunities to deviate …

Best Practices In Writing Assessment, Robert C. Calfee, Roxanne Greitz Miller
Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Our assignment in this chapter is to discuss best practices in writing assessment, a task that poses a twofold challenge for teachers-first, the task of providing authentic opportunities for students to acquire skill in writing while covering an ever-increasing array of other curriculum demands; second, the overriding pressures to ensure that students perform well on the standardized tests that have become the primary accountability index. As we complete this chapter, few state testing systems rely to any significant degree on performance tests for measuring student achievement. Multiple-choice tests dominate, and on-demand writing tests (including the SAT) generally contravene the counsel …

The Pet Food Recall Puzzle: Who, What, Why, And How Much, Roxanne Greitz Miller
The Pet Food Recall Puzzle: Who, What, Why, And How Much, Roxanne Greitz Miller
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Last spring, North America was gripped in the largest pet food recall in history. News outlets reported tens of thousands of dogs and cats becoming ill, and many dying, as a result of ingesting contaminated pet food. Several pet owners have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers and distributors of the pet food products. I think this is an excellent real-life science story to use with students to show science investigation in action, and to discuss the intersections between the role of regulatory agencies and the public.
In order to understand the case, you first have to know the facts. We'll …

"The University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) and the Teaching in Educational Administration Special Interest Group (TEA-SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) recently formed a joint taskforce to study the preparation of leaders in educational administration. The taskforce has drawn together scholars in the field of educational leadership to assess the availability and quality of research on pre-service principal and superintendent preparation. It is also charged with establishing standards for research and recommending future directions for research in this area.
While other members of the taskforce addressed issues of curriculum, pedagogy, and theories of educational leadership preparation, the …

The article discusses the importance of bone tissue to human beings and the ways to help students to understand its functions. The bone tissue forms the human skeleton to produce varied motions such as walking and talking. In addition, it protects the vital organs of a person and contributes the development of blood. The bone is composed of bone matrix, a dense material occupied by calcium and potassium salts. The matrix comprises several cell types including osteoblasts, osteocytes and osteoclasts. According to the author, a continuous influx of new calcium is necessary because of the constant remodeling of bone tissue. …

Are You What You Eat? An Inside Look At High-Tech Food, Roxanne Greitz Miller
Education Faculty Articles and Research
If we abide by the familiar saying "you are what you eat," it is understandable that people may be concerned with the incredible advances in food science technology and their possible impacts on human health. For example, in recent years high-tech scientific processes such as genetic modification, irradiation, and cloning have all been used to increase the safety of food supply, create foods that are more appealing to eat and easier to produce, and increase crop yields. This article will summarize a few hot topics in food science, address what is currently known about the safety of these processes, and …
