This policy letter, prepared for the Colorado State Board of Community Colleges and Occupational Education and submitted in January 2018 reports on the occupational conditions of adjunct faculty in the Colorado Community College System. The document describes the adverse employment and instructional conditions present in the CCCS, arguing that current conditions threaten the quality and integrity of the General Transfer Pathways program (GT-Pathways) in Colorado. The letter advances a range of practical policy reforms for the consideration of Board that, if adopted would improve current working conditions for adjunct faculty and strengthen quality of community college instruction in Colorado.

Bruce Horner’s seminal book, Terms of Work for Composition: A Materialist Critique provided Comp-Rhet WPAs with a methodology for infusing our conversations about work and labor with a holistic understanding of how these reflect on the lived experiences of students, teachers and administrators. Drawing on empirical data including surveys of contingent faculty at a large northeastern research university, as well as textual analysis of teaching material and an NCTE position statement, I propose the inclusion of a materialist-oriented conceptualization of time to the discussion began by Horner and others. Abstract: Collegiality is integral to the healthy functioning of any academic department and is a necessary professional attribute for new faculty, who often spent their graduate school careers with relatively little involvement in institutional politics, to develop. However, the recent trend to explicitly outline tenure and promotion requirements for collegial behavior gives us pause. We question if a collegiality statement for tenure and promotion could function as yet another obstacle between faculty from background that have historically been underrepresented in the academy (women, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, etcetera) and their bids for tenure.

Teaching the Publishing Process for Student Self-Efficacy:

The HSU Library and Academic Technology implemented a workshop on campus to demystify the elements of publishing a scholarly article from start to finish. The tutorial provided support to students, staff, new lecturers, and librarians at every stage of the research cycle. Even those who did not yet have a research project could experience a guided, hands-on introduction that allowed them to find their path in the abundant opportunities in academic publishing. The instructors provided students both a face-to-face and online experience to work through the publishing process.

The emerging and rapidly developing Learning Analytics (LA) field shows great potential for improving learning outcomes by monitoring and analyzing student performance to allow instructors to recommend specific interventions based on key performance indicators. The introduction of Place Based Learning Communities (PBLCs) at HSU in 2015 has become an increasingly discussed topic throughout the university. We use the term “Learning Community” in its strictest sense - a curricular approach to education that intentionally links a cluster of courses around an interdisciplinary theme and enrolls a common cohort of students. The production of higher GPAs and retention and significant achievement gap closure among the HSU PBLC cohorts is undeniable.

Y.E.S. provides community engagement programs for HSU students to volunteer in local school and community sites. Y.E.S. programs are student-initiated and student-led and directly serve local community needs. By creating a collaborative, inclusive and safe environment, Y.E.S. volunteers become active creators of their own learning.

The purpose of this research was to conduct a needs assessment of a remote indigenous community, Santa María Zoogochi, Oaxaca, Mexico. The focus of the needs assessment was on the community’s concerns and suggested solutions to problems they identified. The focus on general community concerns allowed participants to identify immediate needs they found of importance. This research was conducted using the Concerns Report Method (CRM), which is a strategy associated with Participatory Action Research (PAR). Children with hearing impairments show balance and motor deficits mainly due to damaged or undeveloped areas of the vestibular system. The auditory sense plays a dynamic role in producing functional movements and motor coordination skills. Hobby preferences have been shown to influence physical activity participation. An institution's campus climate has been found to influence student success. This study seeks to examine the factor of campus climate, specifically negative campus racial climate (NCRC), as it relates to the GPA and university satisfaction of Black students at a rural institution. In order to maximize its benefits, it is vital to understand what teaching methods and scaffolds best support different student populations as they are introduced to inquiry-based learning in different contexts. This project studied the effectiveness of using a particular scaffolding tool, an advanced organizer template, to support seventh grade science students in an introductory inquiry-based unit. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of an exercise intervention in reducing stereotypical behaviors in a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A single subject A-B-A-B design with a repeating baseline was used for this investigation. The research design will be implemented to determine if an exercise program (i.e., cycling) impact the frequency of stereotypical behaviors demonstrated by a child with ASD. Results indicate that an exercise intervention has the potential to decrease stereotypical behaviors in a child with ASD. Struggling students benefit significantly from access to a mentor, who can encourage them and positively reinforce desirable social behavior while helping them learn skills to be successful in society. In some American schools, the Positive Behavior Systems of Intervention and Support (PBIS) is used to encourage youth to learn these skills. The system is broken up into three tiers: Tier I, Tier II and Tier III. Eighty percent of students fall into Tier I and can meet desired school expectations without additional supports.
