“If You’Re Not Having Fun, What’S The Point Of Playing?” Adolescents’ Best And Worst Interscholastic Sport Experiences, Troy D. Urdahl

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interscholastic athletics are purported to provide many benefits for participants. Some studies have shown the benefits of playing sports, but others have cautioned the expense is not worth the investment and not all outcomes of participation are positive. High school athletics are deeply woven into the American educational system, yet limited research has been conducted to capture the voices of student-athletes to identify their perceptions of sport experiences. Learning this information may help various stakeholders improve interscholastic sport experiences. Therefore, the purpose of this existential-phenomenological study was to examine the best and worst sports experiences of interscholastic athletes in team …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Educators who serve students in online classrooms display a unique set of skills necessary to engage students, however little research and no teacher evaluation tools exist to guide K-12 online teachers in the evidence-based practices needed to perfect their craft. The research that does exist focuses on the post-secondary classroom which is assumed to be significantly different from K-12 environments. Using a Delphi study, an expert group of MN K-12 online educators confirmed that the research from the college level related to teacher immediacy and interaction, the teacher behaviors that most impact student engagement, are applicable to the K-12 online …

A Study Of Parent Satisfaction Of The Transition From Junior High To Senior High School For Students With Special Education Needs, Colleen M. Feldman

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the parental perspective and satisfaction with the transition process as their child, who is a student with special education needs, moves from the junior high to the high school setting. For students with disabilities, transitions within the education system can be more challenging and difficult (Hay & Winn, 2005; Hill, 2010; Kinney, 2006;) than for students without unique learning needs. Many parents of special education students find the transition from junior high to senior high school to be particularly intense. If school professionals are in the position to support educational transitions, understanding …

Keeping Good Teachers Teaching: A Study Of The Retirement Of Baby Boom Teachers, Dean Erickson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Baby boom teachers, born between 1946-1964, are in the midst of making retirement decisions. Some choose to remain teaching as long as they physically and mentally can handle the demands of the job, while others look for the first opportunity to exit. The large number of teachers in this cohort and the fact that 50% of teachers are also leaving in their first 5 years of teaching is causing the teacher “pipeline” to leak at both ends. This dissertation looks at baby boom teacher retirement and factors that cause some to retire early while others continue teaching and what can …
