Factors That Led To Crossing The Picket-Line: An Autoethnography Of A Faculty Striker, Giovanna Follo Mar 2023

Factors That Led To Crossing The Picket-Line: An Autoethnography Of A Faculty Striker, Giovanna Follo

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Historically, academic strikes are not frequent and are short. Much of the research examines why academic strikes occur; however, few explore the individual multidimensional striker. The research question in this autoethnographic essay explored, “What factors led me, a pro-union advocate, to cross the picket line?” Crossing the picket meant going back to work before the strike was declared over. The self-reflexive narrative examines several themes, including the mental health burden of anxiety and stress, the place of coercive power used when the administration pursues extreme threats, the role that unions play in setting up expectations at the outset of a …

Federation Divided, Max M. Balton

Capstones

At the start of the 2020 school year, a lack of covid safety plans led teachers like Rosy Clark to protest, urging her union the United Federation of Teachers to act. She and other progressives in the dissident caucus, Movement of Rank and File Educators, were willing to strike to ensure their safety. Union leadership hesitated largely because public union strikes are illegal under the state’s Taylor Law.

This four-part audio documentary looks at the history of the UFT and this contentious state law. The union began striking under more onerous strike prohibition legislation. Its roots are steeped in radical …

The Ladies' Garment Worker Speaks Volumes For The Woman Worker And Writer, Carolyn J. Cei Feb 2019

The Ladies' Garment Worker Speaks Volumes For The Woman Worker And Writer, Carolyn J. Cei

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The nine volumes of The Ladies’ Garment Worker, put through text analysis, would help find the voice of the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union through their own publications. On a CUNY Commons site this analysis would provide digital images of each publication along with a timeline of frequently-used words and phrases that connect to each other; this analysis would establish the main “voice” and identity of the ILGWU women that would create a personified entity during these the issue that is analyzed, which is Volume 1 that was published throughout 1901. The identity of women workers, even under the …

The Great Regression’S Impact On Construction Training Programs: Multi-Level Analyses Of Recruiting & Retention Concepts, John S. Gaal Edd Sep 2013

The Great Regression’S Impact On Construction Training Programs: Multi-Level Analyses Of Recruiting & Retention Concepts, John S. Gaal Edd

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

The intent of this practitioner-based research study is to determine if there is a difference in the attitudes of construction industry professionals—at local and international levels—towards various training-related recruiting and retention concepts. In light of the global economic malaise, training programs are being held to higher standards and, thusly, different metrics than in the past. In today’s environment, outcomes-based designs (versus outputs-based) have gained attention from both private and public funders of such training programs. Thusly, programs must adapt to the needs of the industry rather than rely on outdated materials and methods. To this end, a survey was designed …

Exploring The Social Relations Of Education And Organizing In The Ontario Minimum Wage Campaign1, Sheila Wilmot Jun 2011

Exploring The Social Relations Of Education And Organizing In The Ontario Minimum Wage Campaign1, Sheila Wilmot

Adult Education Research Conference

Many of the workers’ rights activities going on in Canada today form a nexus of education, union-renewal-oriented organizing, and anti-racist social- change initiatives. My dissertation on The Social Organization of the Ontario Minimum Wage Campaign (OMWC) is a case-study exploration of community and union workers’ rights organizing throughout the 2001 to 2007 period of the campaign. For my research I employed Institutional Ethnography (IE) to explicate the social relations of class, race, gender and bureaucracy. In this paper I look primarily at the relationship between labour education and workers-rights organizing goals and activities in the last phase of the campaign.
