Promoting Community Engagement Through Basic User Tutorial Of Epa Geospatial Screening Tools, Jonas Nguyen Aug 2020

Promoting Community Engagement Through Basic User Tutorial Of Epa Geospatial Screening Tools, Jonas Nguyen

Master's Projects and Capstones

Social inequalities are riddled with health disparities and outcomes leading toward lower life expectancy. Communities of color, low income, and rural neighborhoods lack the voice and resources to effectively oppose industrial settlement which would likely lead to the release of toxic wastes into the water, air and ground ultimately affecting residential health. Empowering members through community engagement is a relatively new strategic process where researchers are finding mutual benefits in design, implementation, and results. This study aims to identify and promote tools for community engagement within the scope of environmental justice by working with EPA geospatial screening tools and designing …

Determining The Extent To Which Information Literacy Online Learning Objects Follow Best Practices For Teaching And Assessing Critical Thinking, Goodsett Mandi Jan 2018

Determining The Extent To Which Information Literacy Online Learning Objects Follow Best Practices For Teaching And Assessing Critical Thinking, Goodsett Mandi

ETD Archive

Critical thinking is widely accepted as a primary goal of higher education. The skills and dispositions of critical thinking have much in common with those of information literacy, and instruction librarians could improve their information literacy instruction by integrating critical thinking. However, it is not currently clear to what extent instruction librarians encourage critical thinking in their teaching. Moreover, rather than credit-bearing courses, much of library instruction currently consists of either “one-shot” (single class period) sessions or online learning objects which students complete asynchronously. This study focuses on online learning objects, which are often created with great effort, have long-lasting …

Taking The First Step To Develop Scalable, Asynchronous Library Instruction, Liz Thompson, Bethany Mickel, Howard Carrier Jul 2016

Taking The First Step To Develop Scalable, Asynchronous Library Instruction, Liz Thompson, Bethany Mickel, Howard Carrier

Libraries

Scalable equals asynchronous. And asynchronous equals boring. Or does it? The First Year Writing program at JMU offers more than 60 sections of the foundational first‐year writing course each semester to more than one thousand students and is supported by one librarian. In an effort to reach more than the usual 20 one‐shot sessions each semester, a small team from the library planned and built an asynchronous, modular tutorial series. Now, information literacy instruction is provided using a tool called Guide on the Side (GotS) and uses short scenario videos and additional content followed by activities and assessment to improve …

How many times have you participated in this scenario?

Student: I can’t find this article in the databases (she shows you a citation).
You: Oh, this citation is for a book. Let’s check the catalog.

Helping students understand citations seems to be an on-going activity, but learning about citations can be boring and requires attention to detail. In order to address this problem, we created a fun tutorial using drag-and-drop technology that can be used in an online environment or in the classroom. The tutorial helps students identify the elements of a citation, place them in the correct order, and …

Attitudinal Study: The Interaction Of Students Taking Calculus And Prerequisite Courses While Participating In Peer Tutorials, Deborah Coleman Hannah

Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology Dissertations

Bridging the achievement gap while improving overall performance in high school mathematics is a primary concern in the educational arena. A peer tutoring strategy was implemented to examine its effects on the achievement and attitude of African American students in mathematics courses. Vygotsky’s theory of social interaction and the Zone of Proximal Development served as the guide for this investigation involving 138 high school students. Dyads were formed by pairing 46 Algebra and Geometry students with 46 Advanced Placement Calculus students for after- school tutorial sessions. Forty-six members of a control group received no tutoring intervention. Participants completed a 25-item …

An Evaluation Of A Wiki Tutorial On Web Accessibility For Uc Irvine Web Programmers, Eric A. Kowalik

Eric A. Kowalik

Education is shifting from the real world classroom to a virtual Internet world where learning can occur at any time and any place. The development web sites and virtual learning environments ultimately fall to programmers who create the code, unfortunately many programmers have not been educated about the necessary steps that need to be taken to ensure the web sites they create are accessible to all learners, even those with disabilities. This project includes a review of literature on web accessibility and a collaborative web based training tutorial designed to educate programmers at the University of California, Irvine about web …

G91-1055 Using Moving Averages To Effectively Analyze Trends, Robin R. Riley, Lynn H. Lutgen

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This fifth of a nine NebGuide series is designed to show how trend lines can assist producers and others in analyzing the market's technical side.

What is the objective in using moving averages?

Technical analysts construct a moving average of price to provide a better market timing indicator than the traditional straight-line method. The idea is to smooth out daily price fluctuation to get a clear view of the market trend. The moving average is a method for averaging near-term prices in relation to long-term prices. This technique should not be confused with the oscillators described in NebGuide No. 8 …
