A Phenomenological Study Of Teacher Experiences Personalizing Learning In English Language Arts, Kristen N. Soper
A Phenomenological Study Of Teacher Experiences Personalizing Learning In English Language Arts, Kristen N. Soper
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of secondary English language arts teachers implementing personalized learning in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Teachers who personalize learning must currently determine their own method of doing so without adequate research about the process to inform their pedagogy. The theory guiding this study was Vygotsky’s theory on social development, as it highlights the necessity of social interaction to help students stay within the zone of proximal development even in a personalized learning framework. The ten participants for this study were selected by purposive sampling, and data were collected through semi-structured …

Perspectives On Teacher Leadership: Implications For Practice And Teacher Leadership Development, Jennifer Thomason, Karen L. Sanzo, Jay Paredes Scribner
Educational Foundations & Leadership Faculty Publications
Teacher leaders are valuable members of the school community. However, there is little existing research that explores how teacher leaders shape and enact their roles. In this article we explore how teacher leaders come to understand their role, as well as how principals and other school colleagues interact with teacher leaders and the ways in which those interactions support teacher leader role development. These findings have significant implications in helping us understand how to help teacher leaders develop in their role and the ways in which leaders can foster teacher leadership growth.
Mathematics Teachers’ Working With Cooperative Learning, Jaime Gomez
Mathematics Teachers’ Working With Cooperative Learning, Jaime Gomez
Theses and Dissertations
Teaching styles vary greatly amongst educators. One being extensively researched and highly discussed is the method of cooperative learning. Although many studies have shown the benefits of incorporating cooperative learning into classrooms, it has not been a widely used method of teaching in high school mathematics classrooms. This study explores some of the efforts that teachers, who utilize cooperative learning in their classrooms, make to implement cooperative learning lessons successfully. Furthermore, this study also explores the challenges these teachers have encountered when using cooperative learning. Data was collected qualitatively by interviews and surveys from six in-service high …

Understanding Social-Emotional Reciprocity In Autism: Viewpoints Shared By Teachers, Lizaan Schwartz, Wendi Beamish, Loraine Mckay
Understanding Social-Emotional Reciprocity In Autism: Viewpoints Shared By Teachers, Lizaan Schwartz, Wendi Beamish, Loraine Mckay
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Poor social-emotional reciprocity (SER) has been identified as one of the defining traits of autism. It is a key criterion in recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders editions, DSM-IV and DSM-V (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994, 2013). Yet this difficulty related to socially engaging and interacting with others is poorly understood. The study reported here was a small-scale, qualitative inquiry underpinned by a phenomenological approach in which social-emotional reciprocity (SER) was the phenomenon being studied. Semi-structured interviews with three experienced teachers at an Australian autism-specific school were used to capture their understandings and experiences related to the trait. …

Le Vivre Ensemble Et Les Interactions Sociales : Vers Une Approche Interactionniste, Abdelfettah Idrissi
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
We live in a society, which is in a perpetual motion, a society focused on economy, individualism, and globalization. In the era of new technologies, the media broadcasts to us all day long events steeped in violence, atrocities of all kinds, competition, egoism, and the list goes on in view of what we suffer daily at an audiovisual level. We wonder if the values of living together, including human, ethical and moral values, are still relevant or should we believe that they are obsolete? Are we individualistic to the point of living each one at home, for oneself, without worrying …
Book Groups And The Relational Engagement Of Sixth-Grade Readers, Kathryn Contini
Book Groups And The Relational Engagement Of Sixth-Grade Readers, Kathryn Contini
Educational Studies Dissertations
The purpose of this mini-ethnographic case study is to determine the factors that impact the relational engagement of middle-school readers in a student-facilitated book group. This is achieved by considering how students relationally engaged with texts, peers, and a teacher while participating in a student-facilitated book group for three months. As the understanding of academic engagement has broadened to include relational engagement, it is necessary to examine how this theoretical construct impacts reading instruction. While educators have long known learning is social, classroom success is most often measured by independent achievement rather than by social engagement. For these reasons, it …

Experiences Of Adolescents In The General Education Setting Interacting With Peers With Intellectual Disability, Katie Goldey
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Social interaction is critical to health, quality of life, and linguistic and cognitive development. However, young people with intellectual disabilities are unlikely to have equitable opportunities for social interaction. This may be particularly true of adolescents. This study used qualitative phenomenological methods to examine the lived experiences of students in the general education setting interacting with their peers with intellectual disability. Twenty participants engaged in one on one interviews with the author. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for overarching themes. Four main themes emerged from the data including: (1) Teens just don’t have many opportunities to interact with …

Frequency And Nature Of Elementary School Teacher-Student Interactions, Thomas Ratkos
Frequency And Nature Of Elementary School Teacher-Student Interactions, Thomas Ratkos
Dissertations
Schools are a social environment. Students are learning how to interact with others, both peers and adults outside their immediate family. The classroom teacher is an important part of academic instruction but also with respect to socialization. Teachers and students form a relationship, the quality of which is both important and varied. Students are an active part of that relationship; their behavior changes the way their teachers perceive and act toward them. Past studies have shown that teacher-student relationships are correlated with academic success, student behavior problems, disciplinary consequences such as suspension and expulsion, and school dropout. The present study …
A Social Influences Framework Related To College Student Learning Failures, Keith R. Proctor
A Social Influences Framework Related To College Student Learning Failures, Keith R. Proctor
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explored ways that college students reflectively described the social influences related to their learning failures. This exploration was conducted using semi-structured interviews and Stake's multiple case analysis method. The findings from the interviews were used to develop a framework that describes the key social influence attributes of the learning failure experiences. The key attributes of the framework include: (a) roles, (b) context, and (c) phases. Each key attribute is discussed in detail. The framework serves as the means for exploring several related strands of research related to learning failure in a cohesive way, potentially enriching our understanding of …

Advisor: Dr. Monica W. Tracey
Major: Learning & Design Technology
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
Asynchronous communication may have a profound impact on employee collaboration and productivity in the workplace due to the loss of face-to-face interaction and the relationships these opportunities may foster. However, as broadly defined within the literature, synchronous communication is a rich media that supports this type of collaboration and social interaction. Synchronous communication methods that encourage collaboration lead to deeper level learning, …

Acculturation Stress, Psychological And Sociocultural Adjustment, And Development Of American Adolescents: A Qualitative Study Of Newton High School Exchange Students In China, Binbin Zhu
Doctoral Dissertations
Theories from the extant acculturation literature functioned to categorize international students’ adaptation experiences and predict their acculturation outcomes. Also, relevant studies focused mainly on students at the tertiary level. For adolescent students seeking self-development toward independence and autonomy, how they negotiated their identity challenges and tensions in a cross-cultural context, and how surrounding others in their socialization impacted on their psychosocial adjustment process and transformative experiences have not been actively explored. This qualitative study approached adolescent students’ acculturation as an integrated development and learning process to explore the effects of developmental and cultural factors on their cross-cultural adaptation, especially examined …

A Teacher’S Use Of Video To Train Paraprofessionals In Pivotal Response Techniques, Adria Murphy, Suzanne E. Robinson, Debra L. Cote, Belinda D. Karge, Trissie Lee
A Teacher’S Use Of Video To Train Paraprofessionals In Pivotal Response Techniques, Adria Murphy, Suzanne E. Robinson, Debra L. Cote, Belinda D. Karge, Trissie Lee
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Research has shown that students with moderate-severe disabilities need direct and frequent social instruction in order to communicate and play with their peers. At the same time, there is little commensurate support for the paraprofessionals tasked with providing this support. It is imperative, then, that paraprofessionals have effective strategies in their repertoire of practices to facilitate social interaction. This investigation examined one classroom teacher's use of video to train two paraprofessionals in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), an evidence based practice for students with autism. Findings suggest that the teacher-provided video training was effective in improving paraprofessionals’ PRT implementation, and subsequently, …
