“You Need To Allow Yourself To Grieve That Loss And That Identity.” College Athletes’ Transition To Life After College Sport.”, Clare Manthey, Jimmy Smith
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Only a small percentage of collegiate athletes compete at the professional level of sport after they graduate, leaving most athletes to transition out of a life involved in sport. Research reviewing life after competitive sport for college athletes and the consequences associated with such a transition is plentiful, however, additional research also argues that life transition research is necessary to maximize the understanding of such a phenomenon. A case study approach used Schlossberg’s Theory of Transition (2011) to research recently retired collegiate college athletes and their time transitioning away from competitive college sports. Several themes emerged from the qualitative results …

Q&A: Christian, Committed, And Called: An Interview, Linda Gray
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
After teaching in a Christian University for more than 40 years, three professors who are retiring and have received emeritus status reflect on how students have changed over the decades and how they—as professors—have had to adapt to meet the needs of an ever-changing student body. The three professors were asked four questions: (1) how have students changed during the last four decades, (2) how have the professors adapted to meet the changing needs of students, (3) what was one unexpected thing each professor learned once they started teaching, (4) what advice do the professors have for those still teaching …

Grasses, Groves, And Gardens: Aphra Behn Goes Green, Heidi Laudien
Grasses, Groves, And Gardens: Aphra Behn Goes Green, Heidi Laudien
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
Laudien argues in “Grasses, Groves and Gardens: Aphra Behn Goes Green” that Behn moves beyond the stylized and artificial backdrops of most pastoral to explore the unique ways the landscape can be manipulated to investigate gender difference and the dynamics of desire and representation. Laudien suggests that in prioritizing the pastoral as political allegory in Behn, we overlook the descriptions of nature and the importance she places on the natural environments she creates. Through close readings of several of her pastoral poems, Laudien reveals that Behn’s landscapes destabilize existing notions of the pastoral space as an idealized and organized place …

Service-Learning "Planning For Retirement" Presentation, Tyler E. Tisdale
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
This project sought to understand the reasons/variables for the lack of participation in planning and saving/investing for retirement by the younger generations that are a part of the current workforce. The problem was defined, and the approach was to create a presentation that established the foundational knowledge for retirement investing among high school students (the individuals who are just about to enter the workforce). The presentation was made, along with a short survey, and sent out to high school teachers in Idaho and Texas. The results presented that there is a fundamental lack of knowledge with regards to the subject …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative research explored why older people do not participate in formal and nonformal education. This study focused on older adults who have not participated in formal or nonformal education since their retirement. Recent studies have shown that participation in formal and nonformal educational activities is an effective way to maintain and enhance cognitive health. The study identified unique individual experiences that influenced the decision-making process regarding participation in educational activities—related to personal interests, commitments, previous academic achievements, classroom environment, benefits derived from participation, and financial considerations. Study participants were involved in daily activities that they believed would help them …

Career Development Professionals' Perceived Self-Efficacy With Baby Boomers From The Automotive Industry, Rhonda Ann Suggs
Career Development Professionals' Perceived Self-Efficacy With Baby Boomers From The Automotive Industry, Rhonda Ann Suggs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The labor market has shifted toward automation with an aging workforce as jobs transitioned from vocational to career. Following the Great Recession, career development professionals struggled to prepare older workers for an evolving, competitive, global workforce for the generation known as baby boomers that prefer to remain in the workforce. The problem in this study was the gap between the career development needs of baby boomers from the automotive industry and the levels of support provided by career development professionals who serve this population. Grounded in Bandura’s social cognitive theory, the purpose of this comparative quantitative study was to determine …

The "R" Factor: Perceptions Of Retirement As A Consideration In Small Business Owner Succession Planning, Debra L. Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory study examines the phenomenon of retirement as a factor of consideration in small business owner succession planning in the United States (U.S.). A mixed methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative analyses, was used to answer the question: In what ways do perceptions of retirement influence small business owner succession planning? Small business owners (N = 102) primarily from the upper Midwest completed a 15-item online questionnaire which asked both closed and open-ended questions related to business and business owner demographics, as well as owner perceptions of retirement. Businesses included are both family owned and non-family owned. Small …

Life Beyond The Classroom: The Transition To Retirement By Long-Serving Educators, Catherine Renaud
Life Beyond The Classroom: The Transition To Retirement By Long-Serving Educators, Catherine Renaud
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Using a qualitative, multiple case study research approach, the personal stories of eight K-12 educators who retired within the past six years were gathered and analyzed. The goal of the study was to understand how educators struggle, or do not struggle, with the life changing event of bringing closure to a career after spending decades in the classroom.
Upon analysis of the data, three key themes were identified:
1. The individuals had control over the timing of their retirement; all participants knew it was the right time to make the transition out of the classroom.
2. Each person is happy …
