Growing international interest in ECEC policy in the 1990s resulted in increasing awareness of its significance for education policy in Ireland. Arising from this, in 1999, Ready to Learn: A White Paper for Early Childhood Education was published. This led to the establishment of the Centre for Early Childhood Development and Education (CECDE). This chapter charts in chronological order the history and work of the CECDE from its inception in 2001 until its closure in 2008. This paper will present our experiences to design and implement an online training unit to prepare school counseling majors for online counseling. The experiences focus on two parts: (a) the design of the online training, and (b) the design of online counseling. Based on a technology-integration model and the traditional ADDIE instructional design model, new strategies that cooperate with the online environment and current Web 2.0 tools and applications are developed and applied into the online training and online counseling. Strategies, tools, issues and some useful tips will be discussed.

Online counseling has been one important portion in our counseling skill training courses. In online counseling, video applications (such as video-conferences, storytelling, interactive information materials, screen-capture video, and counseling video session evaluation) are used for client assessment, online communications, counseling education and evaluation. This paper will present the analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation of integrating these applications into online counseling. Methods, procedures, activities, and issues will be described.

This study observed the communicative partnerships between normal-hearing mothers and their normal-hearing (N=3) or hearing-impaired (N=5) children (ages 17-46 months) prior to brief periods of separation. Results indicated that the quality and development of communicative interaction between normal-hearing mothers and hearing-impaired children is central to the success of early education programs.

Describes nonsexual forms of maltreatment in daycare settings that may occur under the guise of curriculum. Forms of day-care maltreatment are described (e.g., failure to provide adequate food, shelter, and safety; failure to provide adequate need gratification) as are the conditions likely to create a context for abuse and neglect. Physical abuse, psychological abuse, verbal abuse, and developmental/educational abuse are examined. Potential impact of day-care maltreatment is also discussed. More than 80% of US college students report feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, almost half of whom describe their academic experience as traumatic or very difficult to handle. Stress, sleep difficulties and anxiety are just some of the symptoms that manifest in college students. Undergraduates seem particularly susceptible to these stressors, but only one in five seeks medical consultation for their issues. (American College Health Association [ACHA], 2013)

The research is clear: What teachers do in their classrooms matters. But which practices really make a difference? John Hattie (2012) conducted an extensive meta-analysis, looking at 800 meta-analyses that focused on locating a specific student achievement outcome and identifying an influence on that outcome. Formative assessment topped his list of the most influential practices that improve student outcomes. What makes formative assessment so effective? It depends on whom you talk to.
