The General Educational Development (GED) is a high school equivalency credential sought after by millions of Americans who do not hold a traditional high school diploma. This program evaluation offers insight to a local adult GED program as it seeks to increase the retention and GED completion rates of the students in their program. The evaluation utilized a participatory approach and qualitative design, with document review and semi-structured interviews as the primary data sources. Thematic analysis was utilized to organize evaluation results into themes representing areas of effectiveness and improvement. It is time for change in the world of English language teaching. The dominant view and practice of teaching English as a neutral, straight-forward act of imparting “objective” grammatical, phonological and semantic knowledge to passive students does not serve the interest or needs of the estimated 1.5 billion students learning English in today’s interconnected, dynamic world. This paper introduces the ways in which the challenges of open enrollment ESL programs affect both students and teachers and the importance of group cohesion in adult learning. What happens when an American tries to do Freirean-based liberatory teaching in the post-colonial, EFL context of West Africa?
