The Metaphors Of Identity Among Adjunct Faculty, Melissa Ryan
The Metaphors Of Identity Among Adjunct Faculty, Melissa Ryan
Culminating Projects in Higher Education Administration
Adjunct faculty are an integral part of the higher education structure, allowing community college leadership to meet the instructional and financial needs on their campuses. Community colleges rely heavily on adjunct faculty to meet the changing needs of student enrollment at a low cost, with no long-term commitment to future employment. Research paying attention to the increased utilization of adjunct faculty in the community college setting has focused on topics including job satisfaction, student outcomes, and studies comparing part-time faculty and full-time faculty in advancement opportunities. This study was conducted to provide an opportunity for adjunct faculty members in the …

Educational Foundations & Leadership Faculty Publications
The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover the motivational factors influencing part-time faculty employment within the community college from the perspective of the part-time faculty. The study examined these reported motivational factors for differences influenced by age, gender, and employment status. A survey was distributed to a random sample of part-time faculty members at a large metropolitan community college in the Southeastern United States. Participants were asked to respond to categorical demographic questions and survey questions to determine workplace satisfaction. Three open-ended questions were presented to obtain in-depth information about the motivational factors leading adjunct faculty to seek …
Part-Time Faculty: Semantics And The Meaning Of Contingent Teaching, Margaret E. Winters
Part-Time Faculty: Semantics And The Meaning Of Contingent Teaching, Margaret E. Winters
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
The variety of titles for non-tenure-track, part-time, contingent faculty and their semantic meanings are explored. The terms are not random when looked at collectively, but rather form a pattern which is indicative of contemporary post-secondary academic employment and culture. More specifically, these titles reflect several characteristics of the faculty who bear them: among others, the fact that they are not in full-time employment, the fact that their contracts are for shorter periods of time than those of tenure-track faculty, and the fact that their contracts reflect an expectation of impermanence in employment. Also expressed in the titles are more nuanced …
The New Focus Of Academic Organizing: Private Institutions Now Face Academic Collective Bargaining, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr.
The New Focus Of Academic Organizing: Private Institutions Now Face Academic Collective Bargaining, Nicholas Digiovanni Jr.
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Academic labor unions will likely become a growing presence on the campuses of private colleges and universities in the years ahead due to three main factors. First, the NLRB has agreed to hear a case involving a petition by the United Auto Workers to represent graduate teaching assistants at The New School, and it is quite likely that the NLRB will reverse past precedent and find that graduate teaching and research assistants will have the right to unionize at private institutions. Second, the Board also issued a highly consequential decision in December of 2014 which will make it exceedingly difficult …

The Relationship Between Adjunct Faculty Staffing And College Student Retention And Graduation, Stephen R. Deutsch
The Relationship Between Adjunct Faculty Staffing And College Student Retention And Graduation, Stephen R. Deutsch
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The rise of non-tenure track, part-time faculty, referred to as adjuncts, has brought a significant shift to the academic workforce. The count of part-time faculty on campuses has followed an upward trend for the last few decades and now part-time faculty form half of the total faculty workforce. This begs the question, in the face of institutional policies that favor increasing the proportion of adjuncts on faculty rosters: Has the use of adjuncts negatively impacted the student experience and quality of education, leading to lower persistence and graduation rates? This dissertation examines the relationship between adjunct faculty and student outcomes …
Job Satisfaction Of Adjunct Faculty Who Teach Standardized Online Courses, Claudia A. Ruiz
Job Satisfaction Of Adjunct Faculty Who Teach Standardized Online Courses, Claudia A. Ruiz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the job satisfaction of 205 adjunct faculty teaching standardized online courses at a private university in the United States. The extent of the relationship between demographic, motivator, and hygiene factors associated with adjunct faculty job satisfaction were identified. Results from this study indicate that adjunct faculty value work recognition, technical and instructional technology support, and take pride in their teaching. Important faculty satisfaction predictors based on analyses of hierarchical regression models were motivator factors recognition, achievement, and work itself, and hygiene factors policy and administration and salary.

Encouraging Faculty Attendance At Professional Development Events, Dakin Burdick, Tim Doherty, Naomi Schoenfeld
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
For faculty development events to have the greatest impact on campus practice, faculty developers need to attract and include as many faculty members as possible at their events. This article describes the testing of a checklist regarding faculty attendance at professional development events through a survey of 238 faculty members at small colleges in the United States. The results demonstrate the influence of social relationships upon faculty attendance at teaching and learning events, the difficulties of scheduling such events, and motivational differences between full-time and adjunct faculty. The use of food as a motivator for attendance is also appraised. The …

Bargaining Quality In Part-Time Faculty Working Conditions: Beyond Just-In-Time Employment And Just-At-Will Non-Renewal, Gary Rhoades
Bargaining Quality In Part-Time Faculty Working Conditions: Beyond Just-In-Time Employment And Just-At-Will Non-Renewal, Gary Rhoades
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
Two aspects of part-time faculty members’ working conditions that are problematic for educational quality are examined in this article—“just-in-time” employment and “just-at-will” non-renewal. With an eye to enhancing student learning conditions, the article explores feasible strategies that are found in the collective bargaining agreements of units for part-time only bargaining units. Collective bargaining provides a reasonable framework for rethinking, redefining, and renegotiating the working conditions of faculty working in part-time positions to improve student learning outcomes and educational quality.
A Comparison Of Student Success By Faculty Qualifications, Kristine A. Garner
A Comparison Of Student Success By Faculty Qualifications, Kristine A. Garner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Providing the best qualified faculty to ensure the most successful student outcomes is a priority in higher education. The use of adjunct faculty in colleges and universities is continually increasing, especially for lower level courses. Previous research has come to conflicting conclusions regarding the quality of adjunct faculty. Indicators of student success were compared between part-time instructors with professional doctoral degrees and full-time instructors with academic doctoral degrees. Results of statistical analyses of both a comparison of final grade distributions and knowledge of course content determined that there were no significant differences between two comparable groups of students in a …
Who Are The Part-Time Faculty? There's No Such Thing As A Typical Part-Timer, James Monks
Who Are The Part-Time Faculty? There's No Such Thing As A Typical Part-Timer, James Monks
Economics Faculty Publications
The use of contingent faculty in higher education in the United States has grown tremendously over the past three decades. In 1975, only 30.2 percent of faculty were employed part time; by 2005, according to data compiled by the AAUP from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), part-time faculty represented approximately 48 percent of all faculty members in the United States.
Despite the widespread perception that part-time faculty are exploited, underpaid, and afforded miserable working terms and conditions, efforts to organize and unionize contingent faculty have had only limited success. According to the 2004 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty, …
