Do-It-Together: Informal Transformative Sustainability Education, Derek Brannon Aug 2023

Do-It-Together: Informal Transformative Sustainability Education, Derek Brannon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Climate Crisis is an urgent and inescapable reality students are thrust into. Learners must be prepared adequately for their futures, not only for their sakes but also because collective and transformative change is required. Transformative sustainability education provides one pathway to this transformation and focuses on radically altering students’ perceptions about the world and their agency in effecting change on ecological issues. The field of transformative sustainability education is emergent and thus is still fragmented, leaving gaps in the literature. Little research has been conducted on how informal and nonformal university spaces can be used to create transformative experiences …

No One To Save, And Everything To Learn: Decolonial Possibilities For Global Ngos Facilitating Education In Emergencies, Megan N. Patterson

Master's Theses

The field of Education in Emergencies is an emerging field which aims to offer solutions for the continuation of learning in humanitarian settings, but also navigates dynamics of global development in the pursuit of delivering quality learning and universal learning access. In this study, qualitative content analysis is used to examine the beliefs, values, and motivations of three Education in Emergencies (EiE) programs implemented by NGOs. These were selected to offer insight into programming designed for global, regional, and local implementation, as well as nuanced dynamics of power, agency, and saviorism through seven criteria: (1) Purpose of learning, (2) Instructional …

Sharing Experiences To Cultivate “A More Open Mind About Teaching”: A Co/Autoethnography Of Pre-Collegiate Teaching Experiences, William Davis, Abigail Julian Apr 2023

Sharing Experiences To Cultivate “A More Open Mind About Teaching”: A Co/Autoethnography Of Pre-Collegiate Teaching Experiences, William Davis, Abigail Julian

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

The purpose of this study was to create a third space between a teacher educator and an undergraduate student to explore teaching experiences while in high school within NFE programs in which we participated. We developed a series of five prompts that we responded to individually, meeting via Zoom to discuss our experiences and teacher learning. Our collaborative and iterative analysis revealed four categories related to our non-formal education teaching experiences: 1) how teacher learning was impacted by particular contexts in which it took place; 2) how our experiences revealed different and broader notions of teaching than we observed in …

Global Citizenship Education And Scout Movement Curriculum In Egypt: Perspectives From Scouts And Scout Leaders, Tarek M. Faid Oct 2021

Global Citizenship Education And Scout Movement Curriculum In Egypt: Perspectives From Scouts And Scout Leaders, Tarek M. Faid

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study investigated Scouting’s contribution, as a non-formal educational movement, in educating global citizens. To address the research questions, I used a mixed-methods case study design, which necessitated the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data concurrently using varied data sources (surveys, interviews, and the senior scout curriculum document). The study explored the Egyptian scouts and scout leaders’ perspectives of global citizenship and their views on the potential of the Arab senior scout curriculum (2011) to contribute to the development of 15-17 years old scouts as global citizens. In addition, I assessed the extent to which the curriculum encompasses critical …

Hong Kong Adolescents’ Perceptions Of Selected Aspects Of The Job Interview Process, Bob Spires, Jay W. Rojewski Aug 2018

Hong Kong Adolescents’ Perceptions Of Selected Aspects Of The Job Interview Process, Bob Spires, Jay W. Rojewski

Journal of Multicultural Affairs

Increasingly, new labor market entrants must understand and be adequately prepared to engage in the interview process. This exploratory, descriptive case study examined the naïve and informed perceptions of disadvantaged youths in Hong Kong who participated in a job-seeking skills workshop on job interviewing. Qualitative data was coded using an emergent design, through multiple phases of coding to develop thematic findings. Pre- and post- survey data were compared to illustrate changes as a result of the workshop intervention. Participants identified five main themes or groups of questions as being important in a job interview. Two themes were deemed most critical; …

Defining Effective Teaching In Environmental Education: A Georgia 4-H Case Study, Lillian G. Meighan, Nicholas E. Fuhrman Jan 2018

Defining Effective Teaching In Environmental Education: A Georgia 4-H Case Study, Lillian G. Meighan, Nicholas E. Fuhrman

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

Many studies have examined the positive learning outcomes of environmental education (EE), yet few have questioned the means for achieving such outcomes through non-formal teaching methods. Six interviews and four observations were conducted with 4-H environmental educators in Georgia. Study participants defined effective instruction in Georgia 4-H EE as novel and student-centered, where the educator utilizes their own distinct teaching styles, management of the learning environment, and extra resources while capitalizing on teachable moments. Educators worked to create both personal and environmental connections to inspire students to pursue science and environmental careers. EE trainings should prepare educators with either natural …

A Visual Critical Ethnography Of Youth Development In A Rio De Janeiro Favela, Bryn E. Hafemeister Ed.D. Mar 2014

A Visual Critical Ethnography Of Youth Development In A Rio De Janeiro Favela, Bryn E. Hafemeister Ed.D.

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Favelas are Brazilian informal housing settlements that are areas of concentrated poverty. In Rio de Janeiro, favelas are perceived as areas of heightened criminal activity and violence, and residents experience discrimination, and little access to quality education and employment opportunities. In this context, hundreds of non-formal educational arts and leisure programs work to build the self-esteem and identity of youth in Rio’s favelas as a way of preventing the youth from negative local influences.

The Morrinho organization, located in the Pereira da Silva favela in Rio, uses art as a way for the local male youth to communicate their lived …

The Relationship Between Self-Determination, Achievement Goal Orientation And Satisfaction With The Learning Experience : Working With Adult Lifelong Learners, Jane Rodd

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This exploratory study investigated how self-perceptions of self-determination and of achievement goal orientation were related to self-perceptions of satisfaction with the learning experience in a population of 495 adults engaged in non-formal lifelong learning through participation as amateur members of the United States Dressage Association. Multivariate statistics were utilized to investigate the effects of self-determination (autonomy, competence and relatedness) and achievement goal orientation (mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance) on self-reported satisfaction with the learning experience; the six satisfaction sub-constructs were opportunities to improve (knowledge and skill), release and diversion (from everyday life), social aspects (interaction with others), (attitudes of) people …

Literacy For Adults In Fragile States: Design Adaptations For Successful Implementation, Cristine A. Smith, Wendy Wheaton

Cristine Smith

This paper reviews the benefits and challenges of providing adult literacy education services in fragile states. The goal of the paper is to provide guidance to adult literacy practitioners and program planners about design adaptations based on the challenges in such settings. Using project experiences from Sudan and Afghanistan and existing literature on education in emergency settings, this paper proposes practical suggestions for implementing adult literacy programs in fragile states. A comparison of recent reviews of adult literacy program implementation is followed by options for adaptations to program design in fragile states, including suggestions for what should count as successful …
