As the academic year 2019-2020 concludes, we find ourselves in a place for reflection as the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we function. We went from the lowest unemployment rate in many years to the highest unemployment rate in a matter of weeks. This year has been a lesson in agility and resilience. The Career Center staff successfully navigated the transition in delivering remote services in a matter of days, we did not have any down time during this transition period and continued to meet with students. We were able to navigate this transition due to our continual professional …

How much would it cost to send a single student to secondary school for a year? In Malawi it is a mere $300, that comes up to less than a $1 a day to go, yet it is common for these families to be living on less than a dollar a day1. This research that was conducted on the ground in Malawi looks at how effective and beneficial a scholarship that completely paid for the schooling of certain children would be. The study utilizes a causal-comparative research design to compare the educational experiences and outcomes of two student groups – …

The Career Center has the privilege of making a difference is someone’s life everyday. We don’t always know when we make that difference but we do know that planting the seeds of change will have an impact. We often hear from students that they met us during a class presentation their first year and remembered that we could help them or that one of our counseling staff helped them to explore a new major, find an internship that changed their path or helped them to find a full-time position or graduate program that launched their career. It is our pleasure …

Research To Practice: Vocational Rehabilitation Services Received By Youth With Autism: Are They Associated With An Employment Outcome?, Jaime Lugas, Jaimie Ciulla Timmons, Frank A. Smith
Research to Practice Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
While youth with autism represent a small percentage of all vocational rehabilitation (VR) closures, the number who closed out of VR more than tripled between 2003 and 2008 (see Institute for Community Inclusion Data Note 26). As increasing numbers of youth with autism are accessing VR services, it is important to understand how they are using these services and the relationship of these services to outcomes and costs.

Role Of Supported Services In The Provision Of Vocational Training For Open Employment To People With Disabilities In Hong Kong, Woon-Ching, Eliza Lo Chan
Role Of Supported Services In The Provision Of Vocational Training For Open Employment To People With Disabilities In Hong Kong, Woon-Ching, Eliza Lo Chan
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
The performance indicator for training for open employment is on how successfully the trainee is being employed in a job. Other than providing the job skills required which was always the emphasis in the vocational training, there are other issues, equally important, that should be addressed to prepare the trainees to enter into the competitive open job market. Independent and social skills should be strengthened through programmed activities. Attention should also be paid to minimize the mismatch between skills training and job opportunities to the trainees. Based on the provision in the skills centres for the people with disabilities aiming …

The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether intellectual deficiency connotes vocational deficiency in programming decisions made by educational personnel who work with secondary age mildly handicapped students. The influence of the two levels of job difficulty and teacher attitude toward the importance of academic skills for job success on educators' judgements of vocational potential were also evaluated. Questionnaires were sent to 30 educators identified as "leaders" in secondary special education in the State of Washington. Analysis of the data revealed that educators rate the vocational potential of a mildly handicapped person with a high IQ (IQ= 80) …

"While a 1973 English major tends bar in a local nightspot, a social work graduate labors in a steel mill. A math major washes dishes in Florida, an education graduate works as a bank teller and a psychology major serves cocktails in Maine." (Jolly & Pierce, 1976, p . 2) . As these examples point out, there is a great need for our institutions of higher learning to be more responsive to the needs of the job market today.
For the past several years, colleges and universities have been criticized on the basis that they do not prepare young people …
