Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance And Renewal, Gerald Turkel May 2012

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance And Renewal, Gerald Turkel

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The fiscal crisis of higher education currently is being resolved largely through a financing policy of privatization, a pattern that increasingly shifts responsibility to individual students and their families. The politics of privatization makes it ever more difficult for lower-income students to attend college and has become a major financial burden for middle-income people. Beyond the direct financial consequences, privatization has increasingly subordinated the research and educational missions of higher education to the countervailing imperatives of economic growth and competitiveness. Privatization has enhanced the entrepreneurial and corporate features of universities and colleges, increasingly shifting the values of higher education away …

Impacts Of Formal Financing On The Development Of The Sudanese Agricultural Sector, Issam A.W. Mohamed Professor

Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

The agricultural sector of Sudan is faced by many problems. In the irrigated schemes, the government who officially owns most of them there are entrenched managerial problems that brewed for more than six decades. Moreover, the privatization policies of those schemes provoked many outcries and protests. Large schemes like Gezira have collapsed, this year 2011, only 10% of its over one million hectares were cultivated. The rainfed farming is not different with lack of machineries, shortages of available labor and high priced agricultural inputs, it is not expected to fare better than the irrigated schemes. However, even if those problems …

Net Operating Losses, Philip E. Harris Aug 2011

Net Operating Losses, Philip E. Harris

Rural Tax Education

Weather, disease and variable prices for inputs and commodities cause farmer’s income to fluctuate from one year to the next. Farmers can minimize their income tax liability by managing the timing of their income and deductions to keep their taxable income level. In some cases, the leveling technique is not enough to avoid a spike in taxable income or a dip that causes taxable income to go below zero. The tax effect of the spikes can be minimized with income averaging rules. The tax effect of the dips below zero can be managed with the net operating loss (NOL) rules …
