Teaching College In The High School: Unique Features And Challenges Of Site-Based Dual Enrollment, Paul Williams
Teaching College In The High School: Unique Features And Challenges Of Site-Based Dual Enrollment, Paul Williams
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
After a sharp decline associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, 2023 marked two consecutive years of increase in the number of freshman and high-school dual enrollees, with under-18-year-olds driving a disproportionate share of this growth. The rising importance of this latter student group presents new opportunities for colleges as well as underappreciated challenges rooted precisely in the high-school locale of concurrent Dual Enrollment courses. While some known stumbling blocks to effective college-level instruction for high school students are inherent in the age and lower maturity levels of the dominant age cohort, others stem from matters beyond the control of students and …

The Relationship Between Time To Degree Completion And Dual-Enrollment Credits, Peter S. Flint
The Relationship Between Time To Degree Completion And Dual-Enrollment Credits, Peter S. Flint
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study is to determine if there is a predictive relationship between the number of dual-enrollment credits a student earns and the overall length of time to college degree completion. The continued growth of dual-enrollment programs and the encouragement for high school students to participate in efforts to reduce their time in college make this a necessary topic of research. Using the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) Graduating Student Survey (GSS) a sample of students pursuing a baccalaureate degree at a private university were surveyed to determine if a relationship existed between the number …
The Social-Psychological Development Of Dual-Enrollment Students, Paulie Robinson-Stevens
The Social-Psychological Development Of Dual-Enrollment Students, Paulie Robinson-Stevens
Culminating Experience Projects
Dual enrollment is a college acceleration program that allows high school students to take college classes while still in high school. This program as it exists today prepares students for the academic rigors of college, but it does not adequately develop the social or psychological skills they need to succeed in a college environment. Dual enrollment programs also do not include information about transfer credits, financial aid, or support services, all of which are necessary for students to transition from high school to a higher education institution. This project proposes a nine-week seminar to complement the academic preparation dual enrollment …

The aim of this study was to determine why, although rigorous standards in English language arts (ELA) have been adopted in a northwestern state and were designed to build toward college readiness, high school students graduating from a college readiness curriculum are not college ready in the area of writing. The purpose of the research was to explore graduates’ perception of college readiness, how a college readiness curriculum prepared them for college writing, and ways to improve that preparation. The theory that supported this study was the concept of college readiness. The key research questions for this study addressed how …
Marketization Without Marginalization? Approaches To Integration In A Dual Enrollment Magnet School, Shannon Mumolo
Marketization Without Marginalization? Approaches To Integration In A Dual Enrollment Magnet School, Shannon Mumolo
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the well-documented benefits of integration and Southern California’s racial, socioeconomic, and linguistic diversity, California and U.S. efforts to promote integrated magnet schools have been minimal and primarily driven by local districts. Attempts to evaluate magnet programs primarily focus on student outcomes, yet surprisingly few studies examine approaches used by school leaders to establish and achieve program outcomes. This study contributes to the knowledge and practice of magnet implementation by exploring one California high school’s efforts to establish a dual enrollment magnet program. An explanatory mixed methods case study design was used to understand how school leaders promoted student integration …
Exploring Dual Enrollment Faculty Members' Perceptions Of Equity: A Collective Case Study, Michelle Donati Yates
Exploring Dual Enrollment Faculty Members' Perceptions Of Equity: A Collective Case Study, Michelle Donati Yates
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this collective case study was to discover how dual enrollment faculty members perceive and promote equity within dual enrollment courses taught at three high schools in collaboration with a partnering community college. The theory guiding this study was Argyris and Schön’s theory of organizational learning. Argyris and Schön offer insight into how an organization or individual may claim to promote equity but fail to look internally at the policies and practices that hinder equity. The central question was: How do dual enrollment faculty members define and promote equity within the dual enrollment program? Purposeful, criterion-based sampling was …

Fragmentation In The Dual Enrollment Experience: The Importance Of Students’ Self-Perceptions In Dual Enrollment First-Year Composition Students, Sarah Crystal Johnson
English Theses & Dissertations
Dual enrollment has become an embedded aspect of our writing programs yet is still an under-researched area within rhetoric and composition. One reason for this research gap is that many DE students experience their FYC courses on secondary campuses, liminal spaces that are more difficult to access for research. DE students within these spaces experience daily tensions between the collegiate expectations of FYC curriculum and the secondary social contexts in which their DE FYC courses are taught. These unique contextual experiences impact their perceptions of themselves as writers. This research is an attempt to step into this DE research gap …

Exposure to research is known to play a positive role in undergraduate education. However, robust research responsibilities are oftentimes not formally incorporated into a student’s academic experience until master level studies. Further, a variety of intimidation factors often inhibit many undergraduate students from participating on a research team. In this case study, the research team evaluated a unique group of undergraduate researchers who matriculated to the same university after beginning to participate in research as concurrently enrolled students. Following matriculation, each student continued to participate in research throughout the entirety of their undergraduate studies. All of the study’s students were …

Relationship Between Participation In A Dual Enrollment Program, Students’ Race And Socioeconomic Status And Their Retention And Graduation, Nicholas Urquhart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As of 2019, all 50 states have an official dual enrollment policy or program that allows high school students to enroll in college to earn both high school and college credits. Dual enrollment programs have been around since 1990, and much of the research has shown a positive relationship between dual enrollment participation, college retention, and graduating; however, research is limited on college retention beyond the first year and graduation. Access to dual enrollment programs is limited for minoritized and low-income students. This study utilized archival data from the University System of Georgia in an ex post facto research design …

The results revealed that there are statistically significant differences between the independent variables of DE Participation, Gender, Race/Ethnicity, SES, and Rurality and the dependent variable of College Persistence. Controlling for other variables, the following main effects results emerged: Students participating in DE courses were more likely to persist than non-DE students. Female DE students were more likely to persist when compared …
Rural Students' College Choice And The Impact Of Dual Enrollment Programs And College Cost, Elise J. Cain
Rural Students' College Choice And The Impact Of Dual Enrollment Programs And College Cost, Elise J. Cain
New York Journal of Student Affairs
This article explores the college-choice processes of two college students who graduated high school from rural areas in New York State. Hossler and Gallagher’s (1987) three-stage model of the college-choice process was used as the theoretical framework for this study. To gain in-depth knowledge about students’ predisposition, search, and choice stages, narrative inquiry was employed. This article specifically highlights how dual enrollment courses played key roles within the college-choice processes of these students. These findings suggest that there is a need for additional education about college costs and dual enrollment programs for rural students and their families.

The settings of the research were three high schools that offer dual credit courses in Arroyo Nordville, located in South Texas. In this study, …
The Role Of Community College Faculty In Encouraging Student Enrollment Following Dual Enrollment Participation, Kathryn Page Moore
The Role Of Community College Faculty In Encouraging Student Enrollment Following Dual Enrollment Participation, Kathryn Page Moore
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Dual enrollment participation promotes college attendance following high school, and college administrators view the program as a valuable student recruitment opportunity. Yet, less than one-third of participants choose to matriculate with the host institution, especially at a community college. The literature contains minimal information regarding how dual enrollment participation serves as a context in college choice.
Using Perna’s college choice model, this qualitative study explored how dual enrollment participation shaped students’ choice to attend the host institution the semester after high school graduation. Through semi-structured interviews, field notes, and a document review, I answered the following question: How does participation …

Most U.S. states support college-readiness and access through dual enrollment, in which high school students enroll in college courses. Concurrent enrollment (CE) allows students to take college courses in their own high school, taught by high school teachers approved by the partner college. CE has positive effects on students' education, but rarely is CS available through CE. Unlike AP, CE provides college credit to students who are assessed throughout the course rather than by a single high-stakes exam/project. This panel will showcase four different types of post-secondary institutions' experiences offering CS-through-CE and discuss its potential as an entry point into …

Being college and/or career ready is the standard set for high school graduates today in the United States. High schools have the task of making certain that students possess the skills necessary to be prepared for college and/or the workforce. Specific measures are outlined to assess college and career readiness. Dual enrollment programs allow students to be enrolled in college and high school at the same time. Students are given the opportunity to experience college courses while still in the supportive environment of their high school and families. This study depicts the transition to 4-year institutions of nine students from …
