Report to Stakeholders

The title of the annual report, “Our Evolving Garden”, points to how the University continues to develop and progress as “One SMU”. With the world now learning to live with COVID-19 as endemic, the last year has been one in which SMU students have been able to resume many of the activities that contribute towards providing a transformative education. For example, they were able to attend many more events on campus and to travel overseas for internships, exchanges, and community service projects. Faculty too were able to attend academic conferences and meet with educational partners, business connections and research associates …

FY20 saw exciting changes in CRSF with several new initiatives launched, while progress continues on many other ongoing efforts. In particular, FY20 saw the start of two National Science Foundation funded and CRSF-led research projects. The first is the INSPIRES project, a multi-year research collaboration between Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont focused on harnessing Big Data to better understand and forecast the region’s forest given current as well as future uncertainties.

The other effort was a successful Phase 3 reboot of the National Science Foundation Industry-University Collaborative Research Center, Center for Advanced Forestry System (CAFS), for which I have served …

Report to Stakeholders

Last year, the profound impact of the Covid-19 pandemic reaffirmed that the three strategic priorities we had identified for SMU and the wider community – digital transformation, sustainable living and growth in Asia – are the right priorities. As the world learns to manage Covid-19, focus must be given to sustainable living. Here SMU can contribute to driving solutions to manage climate change and sustainable city living.

The COEHD’s tripartite mission remains at the core of its many efforts and activities. It continues to be Maine’s leader in PK-20 Educator Preparation, and more teachers and school administrators in the state have undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Maine than from any other institution in the State. The COEHD also continues to work closely with the Maine Department of Education and the Education and Cultural Affairs Legislative Subcommittee, as well as with local school districts …

Clement and Linda McGillicuddy’s vision to enhance undergraduate humanities experience at UMaine has set us apart from most other institutions in the country. Because of their support, our undergraduate fellows have world-class research experiences in the humanities, from pursuing the history of mathematical literacy through a particular 18th century geometry text, to exploring media representations of social justice efforts by marginalized American communities. With six fellows in spring 2020, we are on track to support seven in the fall and to achieve our full complement of eight McGillicuddy Undergraduate Fellows in spring 2021.
