The Impact Of Mentoring Practices On New Faculty And Staff, Paige Lloyd Dec 2023

The Impact Of Mentoring Practices On New Faculty And Staff, Paige Lloyd

Education Theses and Dissertations

Annually, schools nationwide welcome new educators to their facilities that bring with them a vast array of experiences. Onboarding tools such as mentoring or induction programs are often a customary practice, utilized to provide new educators with skills to assist them in the classroom as well as acclimate them to their new organization. Mentoring is often synonymous with induction programs and associated with the pairing of an experienced educator with a novice to the field or location that can offer support from instructional and classroom strategies to campus policies. With recent shifts in education and an ever-present national teacher crisis …

At-Risk Students’ Perception Of The Effectiveness Of Alternative Schools, Tara D. Cunningham Cantey Apr 2022

At-Risk Students’ Perception Of The Effectiveness Of Alternative Schools, Tara D. Cunningham Cantey

Theses and Dissertations

The need for new and innovative alternatives to traditional high schools has never been greater. Alternative schools operate today as a secret, hidden educational system, often providing much needed support for at-risk students. These schools often have little to no accountability for student achievement. Enrollment at alternative schools is increasing at an alarming rate mainly due to zero tolerance policies and students feeling disengaged with the traditional methods of education. For many years the education system has been rather traditional in teaching/content delivery format. One of the greatest advancements has been technology. However, during the Covid-19 virus pandemic, beyond the …

Sports Terminology As A Source Of Synonymy In Language: The Case Of Uzbek Language, Qodir Turdiyevich Ruziyev Mar 2022

Sports Terminology As A Source Of Synonymy In Language: The Case Of Uzbek Language, Qodir Turdiyevich Ruziyev

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

Modern sports and their terminologies in European and other languages have been strongly influenced by English. In spite of our country being under the influence of the former Soviet Union for a long period, we can still see a lot of foreign sports terminology together with Russian terminologies in Uzbek language. Most sports terminologies are Russian because they come through Russian. The reason is that some of the most popular sports originating in European countries have been exported to other countries together with established terminology. There are several possibilities of how to transfer terminology into recipient languages: to borrow and …

Making A Difference By Being Different: An Examination Of Factors That Contribute To Student Success In Alternative Education Programs, Elizabeth Dragone Jan 2021

Making A Difference By Being Different: An Examination Of Factors That Contribute To Student Success In Alternative Education Programs, Elizabeth Dragone

Theses and Dissertations

Alternative education can provide a pathway to success for students who require a nontraditional approach. Alternative education is neither general education nor special education; rather, it is a setting or program where instruction is provided outside of the traditional school setting, with modifications made to class size, school day and/or delivery of instruction. Research on alternative programs is limited, and further investigation of factors that contribute to the success of students in alternative settings is warranted. New York State has lagged behind many other states in defining alternative education and providing alternative education options for students. The purpose of this …

Open Access Publishing In Higher Education: Charting The Challenging Course To Academic And Financial Sustainability, Mark I. Greenberg Mls, Ph.D. Jan 2015

Open Access Publishing In Higher Education: Charting The Challenging Course To Academic And Financial Sustainability, Mark I. Greenberg Mls, Ph.D.

Journal of Educational Controversy

The benefits, pitfalls, and sustainability of open access publishing are hotly debated. Commercial publishers dominate the marketplace and oppose alternative publishing models that threaten their bottom line. Scholars’ use of open access remains relatively limited due to awareness and perceived benefits to their professional goals. Readership of open access publications is generally strong, but some people disagree that more readers leads to increased citations and research impact. Libraries have grown their influence by supporting and promoting open access, but these efforts come with significant financial costs. Today, open access has flourished most significantly as a philosophy: the belief that the …

Stakeholders' Perception Of Alternative Certification Program, Sherry Park

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The diminution of Alternative Certification Program (ACP) teachers contributes to the teacher shortage and complicates the challenges of hard-to-staff schools. Some ethnic minority, economically challenged districts have experienced a growing attrition rate of teachers prepared by ACPs, resulting in a scarcity of qualified teachers. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of stakeholders, including teachers currently in the program, teachers who left the program before completion, and program administrators, in order to understand the ACP program. A conceptual framework was based upon theorists Feistritzer and Klagholz, the originators of the ACP movement. Ten participants were selected for …

Colgan Air Accident-Driven Changes To Part 121 Flight Operations: It Is Time For Phase Two (Editorial), Donald R. Gibbs

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

It has been just one year since the FAA mandated a minimum of 1500 total flight hours for all part 121 pilots and the implementation of the corresponding 3-tier restricted ATP program based on reduced flight hours. It is time to consider alternatives that meet both the concerns of congress and the concerns of the Colgan Air mishap families, while simultaneously being sensitive to the industry pilot shortage. How did we get here and are there any off-the-shelf alternatives to the three tiers to help get pilots into the left seat sooner?

This article is an editorial and does not …

Looking Inwards: Extended Family Living As An Urban Consolidation Alternative, Natascha Klocker, Christopher Gibson

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Western cities face multiple interrelated and complex predicaments. Demand for new dwellings has outstripped population growth due to a confluence of socio-demographic trends that contribute to shrinking household sizes: population ageing, high rates of divorce and delayed age of family formation (Wulff, Healy and Reynolds, 2004).In Australia,a quarter of households now contain just one person (ABS, 2012). Similar socio-demographic processes, with associated urban spatial planning implications, have unfurled throughout Europe, the UK and North America (Buzar, Ogden, and Hall, 2005,Re'rat, 2012). Households arekey "agentsof urban transformation"; we need to understand them in order to grapple with contemporary urban problems (Buzar et …

Alternative Minimum Tax, Philip E. Harris Aug 2011

Alternative Minimum Tax, Philip E. Harris

Rural Tax Education

Congress imposes the alternative minimum tax (AMT) on taxpayers to prevent them from combining several tax exclusions, deductions and credits to pay very little or no federal income tax even though they have significant income. When it was first enacted in 1969, the AMT affected only a few, very high-income taxpayers. Since it was first imposed, changes to the regular tax rules cause many more taxpayers to pay the AMT. This fact sheet gives a basic explanation of the AMT, some examples of situations that cause taxpayers to pay it, and some planning techniques to minimize the impact of the …

Western has an access problem. While more students than ever want to come to Western, more students than ever are having to be turned away. There simply isn't the space. Fueled by the University's continued emphasis on academic excellence, regular placement among regional "best" in national publications, and the population influx known as the baby boom echo, Western has been inundated with the state's college-bound population. The Washington State Legislature, the Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Office of Financial Management-these bodies plus average citizens are hopeful that Western can address the access issue and let more students in. One solution …
