Educational Learning Environments, Meaghan Rooney 3287247

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The question of classroom learning environment and how it affects learning has been widely studied. The type of environment in which students learn sparks passionate debate in today’s society, since a significant amount of a child’s time is spent in a school. . Research confirms that attending school and obtaining an education will teach children to be successful citizens, but what about the environment in which they go to school? If school is what makes the next generation ready to positively contribute to society, then steps must be taken so that each child has an opportunity to thrive. Students in …

Using Singing As A Teaching Tool In Brass Playing, James G. Gates Jan 2017

Using Singing As A Teaching Tool In Brass Playing, James G. Gates

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This paper is an examination of three prominent brass pedagogues, Emory Remington, Arnold Jacobs, and Joseph Alessi, who each emphasized the importance of singing in rehearsals and personal practice. The purpose of this project is to gather strategies for using singing presented by these pedagogues and consolidate the findings into a resource to be used by classroom educators. The three pedagogical areas included in this resource are Tone/Timbre, Rhythm/Tempo, and Phrasing/Style. The information contained in the resource section of this paper is a collection of beliefs and concepts advocated by each pedagogue. It was gathered through the viewing and transcribing …

Teaching Tuba Students To Be Complete Musicians, Brandon E. Cummings Jan 2017

Teaching Tuba Students To Be Complete Musicians, Brandon E. Cummings

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The goal of music educators is to develop complete musicians who successfully learn and perform all musical concepts. One of the limitations of the band classroom is that performers are required to play a part that is specifically written with the needs of the ensemble in mind, and not the needs of the developing musician. These limitations can be seen in the bass instruments of a band which typically play the harmony or bass-line. While the bass-line and harmony are integral portions of the music, they do not often progress as far as other instrumental parts with respect to the …

Education In Haiti And The Caribbean: A Literature Review, Rebekah Rose Jan 2017

Education In Haiti And The Caribbean: A Literature Review, Rebekah Rose

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

How we educate our youth is something that is constantly changed and altered in order to achieve greatness. Throughout the Caribbean there are countries with significantly lower educational "greatness", leading to significantly high poverty and illiteracy rates. This literature review seeks to compare and contrast three countries in the Caribbean -- Haiti, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic -- and analyze how they educate their youth both with and without disabilities. It is found that Haiti is both the poorest, and has the least educated population. Haiti also has the fewest number of government funded and regulated schools (Dupoux, Wolman, & …

Mathematics And Music: A Search For Correlation, Isaac Sarver Jan 2017

Mathematics And Music: A Search For Correlation, Isaac Sarver

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Several studies have been conducted, which have shown connections between content in music and mathematics. Concepts such as fractions, ratios, etc. are mathematical concepts that also can be found or expressed through music. Although these connections have been made, they primarily address connections within the subject matter of music and math. This study attempts to find a correlation between a high school student participating in a school sponsored music program and receiving a higher average math grade. In the study, two school districts provided anonymous student math score data, while also showing which students participated in a music program. From …

Experiential Learning And Its Place In A Quality Business Education, Zach Gollwitzer, Callie Mack, Brenna Mack

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In this paper, the authors explore experiential learning pedagogy in the context of a business education based on the research of John Dewey (1897), David Kolb (2005), and Scott Wurdinger (2009). In addition to examining the definition of experiential learning and the various implementations of it, this research includes an examination of the business school standards body (AASCB) and of the components in a quality business education. The authors then delve into a literature review of experiential learning, which explores the social structure of education (Dewey, 1897), the process of experiential learning (Kolb, 2005), and specific experiential learning methods (Wurdinger, …

The Socioeconomic Effect Of The Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Savannah R. Shoaff Jan 2017

The Socioeconomic Effect Of The Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Savannah R. Shoaff

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In the state of Ohio, the Ohio Department of Education issues a requirement to all third grade classrooms in the state that they must administer a reading diagnostic to every third grade student; they have entitled this movement as the “Third Grade Reading Guarantee”. This style of testing requires every third grader in the state of Ohio to achieve a “Promotion Score” in order to then progress to their next grade the following year. If students fail to pass their reading diagnostic, they are not considered nor labeled “On Track”, and, thus, cannot move on to the fourth grade. This …

Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Work Experience In Baccalaureate Junior And Senior Level Nursing Students, Mallory Wilson, Taylor Byers Jan 2017

Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Work Experience In Baccalaureate Junior And Senior Level Nursing Students, Mallory Wilson, Taylor Byers

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Background: New nursing graduates entering the healthcare fields have demonstrated competency with clinical skills during their education. However, limited experience with skill performance can leave them prone to clinical errors. Higher self-efficacy levels increase competency as individuals create higher goals and are more easily able to perform tasks. Therefore, work experience during nursing school may increase nursing students’ self-efficacy as they become comfortable performing clinical skills.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between employment in health care facilities and self-efficacy of clinical skills in undergraduate nursing students.

Methods: A non-experimental correlational study using convenience sampling, …

Measuring Bacterial Growth Using A 3d-Printable Spectrometer, Samuel R. Bunting Jan 2017

Measuring Bacterial Growth Using A 3d-Printable Spectrometer, Samuel R. Bunting

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Visible light spectroscopy is a commonly used technique for measuring the growth of bacterial cultures, and growth curves provide broadly important data. However, the equipment and resources required for these experiments has been restricted to higher education and industry due to high cost and sophistication. We have previously reported on an inexpensive, 3D-printable photospectrometer called the SpecPhone. This device utilizes an iPhone as the camera, along with several other, inexpensive additions to make a fully functional spectrometer. Here, the application of the SpecPhone is expanded to the quantification of actively dividing E. coli cultures. Two protocols have been developed; one …
