Taking A Leap Of Faith: Redefining Teaching And Learning In Higher Education Through Project-Based Learning, Jean S. Lee, Sue Blackwell, Jennifer Drake, Kathryn A. Moran
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
This study examines two aspects of teaching with a project-based learning (PBL) model in higher education settings: faculty definitions of PBL and faculty PBL practices, as evidenced by their self-described successes and challenges in implementation. Faculty participants took “a leap of faith” in their teaching practices to redefine what it means to teach and learn using PBL as an instructional methodology. The findings provide insight into how faculty conceptualization of PBL drives implementation; how the PBL approach challenges college-level teachers; and how instructors’ perceptions of their own role in the PBL process impacts how they implement PBL.

Governance And Change In Higher Education: The Debate Between Classical Political Sociology, New Institutionalism And Critical Theories, Imanol Ordorika
Imanol Ordorika
INTRODUCCIÓN. One of the most intense debates about higher education governance and change took place in the twentieth century between the 1970’s and 90’s. METHOD. A systematic examination of the literature on governance in higher education during this period. The core of the works reviewed in this paper, and the analysis of the development of the field is based essentially on literature from the United States. RESULTS. The review shows the gaps and limi- tations of existing theory. It also provides the necessary foundations for the development of new conceptual frameworks that will enhance our understanding of the subject matter: …

The Leadership Practices Of Non-Traditional Students Pursuing A Bachelor's Degree: A Predictive Study, Michael Ammons
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This non-experimental, regression study examined the relationship between leadership practices and academic achievement for a non-traditional student population. The study was conducted at a small, four-year private college in Eastern North Carolina. The sample consisted of N=146 (73 male, 73 female) non-traditional students enrolled in an accelerated bachelor's degree program. Volunteer participants completed the survey which consisted of the Leadership Practice Inventory-Self (LPI) (Kouzes & Posner, 1998) assessment and a demographic questionnaire. Kouzes and Posner's (2007) model of Transformational Leadership Theory is used to explain the leadership practices of non-traditional students. The results of the survey were analyzed using hierarchal …

An Exploration Of The Characteristics Of Public Relations In Regards To Face-To-Face Versus Distance Learning In Two Private Liberal Arts Higher Education Settings, Cessna Catherine Smith Winslow
Dissertations
This study explored perceptions of Public Relations (PR) among graduate higher education publics regarding distance learning as contrasted with face-to-face learning contexts. The research questions assessed student, faculty and administrator perceptions of characteristics of PR: trust, communication, quality, respect and rigor. Participants included students and professors who had experienced both online and face-to-face learning, as well as administrators from two private universities. The larger of the two schools was in the Midwest region of the United States, and at the time of this study, was relatively new to online instruction. The smaller school was located in the Southeast region and …
Onlineeducation
MICHAEL PORTER
More universities and colleges are turning to online education as part of their strategic plans aimed at boosting student enrollment. Understanding the profile of successful students in online education will facilitate a better implementation of these strategic plans and provide a framework for enabling student success in online education. This paper explores the factors that faculty perceive as significant in influencing student success in online education at a predominantly Hispanic serving higher education institution.
The Merchants Of Moocs, James Grimmelmann
The Merchants Of Moocs, James Grimmelmann
James Grimmelmann
A loose network of educators, entrepreneurs, and investors are promoting Massive Open Online Courses as an innovation that will radically disrupt higher education. These Merchants of MOOCs see MOOCs' novel features—star professors, flipped classrooms, economies of scale, unbundling, and openness—as the key to dramatically improving higher education while reducing its cost. But MOOCs are far from unprecedented. There is very little in them that has not been tried before, from 19th-century correspondence courses to Fathom, Columbia's $25 million dot-com boondoggle. Claims of disruption look rather different when this missing context is restored. This essay examines some common arguments about what gives …

(Re)Setting The Agenda For College Men Of Color: Lessons Learned From A 15-Year Movement To Improve Black Male Student Success, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.
Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.
Between 1997 and 2012, much was done on college campuses and elsewhere to improve Black male student achievement. Notwithstanding, their enrollments, academic performance, and rates of baccalaureate degree attainment remain just as troublesome now as they were 15 years ago. But why? And what can be learned as various stakeholders introduce future initiatives in response to issues affecting Black undergraduate men, as well as Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI), Latino, and Native American male collegians? In this chapter, I chronicle the 15-year emphasis on Black male students in U.S. higher education. I first catalogue a range of efforts enacted between 1997 …

During the last several decades, research concerning the developmental trajectories, experiences, and behaviors of college men as ‘‘gendered’’ persons has emerged. In this article, we first critically review literature on Black men’s gender development and expressions within college contexts to highlight certain knowledge gaps. We then conceptualize and discuss progressive Black masculinities by relying on Mutua’s germinal work on the subject. Further, we engage Black feminist scholarship, both to firmly situate our more pressing argument for conceptual innovation and to address knowledge gaps in the literature on Black men’s gender experiences. It is our belief that scholars who study gender …

Examining Factors Influencing Attrition At A Small, Private, Selective Liberal Arts College, Ann M. Gansemer-Topf, Yi (Leaf) Zhang, Cameron C. Beatty, Scott Paja
Cameron C. Beatty, Ph.D.
Despite a diverse body of literature on college student retention, studies focusing on small, private, selective liberal arts colleges are limited. This study utilized a mixed methodology beginning with logistic regression analyses and followed with a qualitative inquiry that included interviews with students who had not persisted. While variables impacting persis- tence at selective institutions may differ from other types of institutions, the role of student affairs in student success remains critical.

Full-Year Sabbatical Award 2014-2015: Furthering Liberal Arts In Indonesian Higher Education, Judith Puncochar
Awards
A rigorous study of the liberal arts with student-centered andragogy is absent in Indonesian higher education. A strong participatory democracy, such as the Indonesian democracy, may require skills engendered by the study of liberal arts and associated opportunities for students to practice skills for dialogue, constructive debate, and potential problem analysis. My sabbatical application postulates that the study of liberal arts in Indonesia will lead to higher levels of critical thinking in college students, higher quality of teachers in local schools, and better citizenship in Indonesia and the world. The Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) invited me to work as a …

Women In Leadership And The Politics Of Power, Caitlin Maeve Kendall
Master's Theses
With the use of intimate interviews, this qualitative research study employed an experiential, story-telling approach to gather a more thorough understanding of individual female experiences in leadership positions in the field of education in relation to the literature on female leadership in a gendered workforce. Although this study only included the experiences of several women leaders in the field of education in the Chicago area, the preexisting research on the topic guided the interview questions and divulged the nexus between a culture of systematic gendered hierarchy in the workplace and the strategies and characteristics of success employed by female leaders …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Campus safety has been a source of concern since the 1990s. However, in 2007, the tragedy at the Virginia Polytechnic and State University sent a sense of alarm through many institutions of higher education. Immediately following this tragedy, institutions across the country began to evaluate and question their safety and security practices. While many recommendations and mandates have been created by public and private agencies to offer guidance to institutions of higher education, none of the recommendations or mandates offered has been specific to the United States-Mexico Border region.
This mixed-methods study gathered perceptions of permanent threat assessment team …

The Impact Of Institutional Complexity On The Implementation Of The English-Medium Instruction (Emi) Reform Concept In Three Northern European Universities, Becky Unites
Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation
This study examines university English-medium Instruction (EMI) reform implementation approaches from a comparative organizational perspective. Over the last decade, the number of master’s degree programs instructed exclusively in English in non-Anglophone Europe increased dramatically. Europe is an interesting case as it actively promotes multilingual learning; however, many European policies over the last twenty years accelerated the rise of monolingual EMI reforms, especially at the graduate-level. The purpose of this exploratory study is to contribute to our understanding of how widespread EMI reforms impact structures and behaviors at the organizational level in European universities in ways that respond to the organization’s …

A3ir-Core At Purdue University: An Innovative Partnership Between Faculty, Students, And Industry, John H. Mott
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Economic realities have begun to motivate public higher education institutions to reexamine their roles in the overall educational process and the associated funding mechanisms that are extant. Such reexamination typically includes both the public/private funding mix and the degree to which a workforce-oriented focus should be employed across curricula. Partnerships between academia and industry are a potential answer to the questions thereby raised, and while such partnerships are nothing new, related structural innovations can improve educational and employment outcomes for students. Industry-sponsored institutional research centers can play a major role in facilitating these partnerships. Once such center, the recently-developed Advanced …
