Oral History Interview: Bob Chapman, Bob Chapman

Bob Chapman was born in Louisa, KY. He grew up on Homemade Holler in the coal community of McVeigh, KY, located in Pike County. His father worked for the Eastern Coal Corporation as an explosions miner. Mr. Chapman attended a two-room school house for a short time in the 1940s, but continued his education through high school in the McVeigh school system. In the audio clip provided, Mr. Chapman discusses a typical day in a coal community and the class system within this community. This collection is composed of Marjorie Willet’s acquisitions from estate sales. Items include a 1934 letter from Margaret Brill to Clara Bush Shanklin discussing personal matters, such as her job at West Side High School, and cultural events, as well as a minstrel show hosted by “The Gammas”. The O. J. Rife pocket ledger contains accounts paid and to be paid. Items in the assorted ephemera folder include a 1958 student newsletter from Huntington’s Gallaher School, an undated letter to Stevie from Joyce and Kirk about traveling on New Year’s Day and their new home, assorted greeting cards (some from …

This collection includes materials related to the life of Maxine Adkins Stewart beginning with her life at Huntington High School as a member of the class of 1928 and ending with her work at Vinson High School. Materials include her high school yearbooks, programs, and other ephemera from Huntington High School as well as materials from her fiftieth reunion, and ephemera materials from Vinson High School such as programs and ticket stubs.
