Childhood Memory And A History Of Different Forms Of Abuse, Timothy Melchert Oct 1996

Childhood Memory And A History Of Different Forms Of Abuse, Timothy Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

A widespread professional and public controversy has recently emerged regarding recovered memories of child sexual abuse, but the prevalence and nature of these memories have received limited empirical examination. This study (N = 553 nonclinical participants) found that very similar proportions of those with histories of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse reported that they had periods without memory of their abuse (21%, 18%, and 18%, respectively). The responses of approximately one half of these participants suggested that they lacked conscious access to their abuse memories, whereas the responses from the others suggested that they had conscious access to their …

Making "Connections" And Shifting The Educational Paradigm: One School's Struggle To Empower Students Through Transforming The Educational Process, Brad (Bradley) Lewis Oct 1996

Making "Connections" And Shifting The Educational Paradigm: One School's Struggle To Empower Students Through Transforming The Educational Process, Brad (Bradley) Lewis

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

According to Elliot W. Eisner of Stanford University, education reform efforts for American schools have not exactly been ”a novel enterprise." In the late 1950s, the Space Race pressured Congress to turn to American education to help regain and maintain our technological superiority. The result was the curriculum reform movement of the 1960s. In the 1970s "accountability" became the central focus of reformers. Then, in April of 1983, A Nation at Risk was published only to give way, by the close of that century, to America 2000, the reform agenda of the Bush Administration, which aimed to do what all …

School of Education Articles

There are now more than 42 million people worldwide with access to global electronic mail. Many of these millions are subject matter specialists whose knowledge encompasses a wide spectrum of expertise. What if “matches” could be made so that volunteers from among this group could communicate directly with K-12 students and teachers who are studying about these experts'specialties? This article discusses lessons learned from The Electronic Emissary Project, an internet-based interpersonal resource that matches teachers to experts in different disciplines.

With The Highest Ideals: The Florida State Normal College At Defuniak Springs, 1887-1905, Sharon Y. Clifford Sep 1996

With The Highest Ideals: The Florida State Normal College At Defuniak Springs, 1887-1905, Sharon Y. Clifford

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The urgent need for teachers led the Florida legislature in 1887 to establish the Florida State Normal College at DeFuniak Springs. The college closed in 1905 with passage of the Buckman Act, which mandated a complete reorganization of state-supported higher education and ended coeducation for white students. This small college, open for eighteen years, was uniquely situated in time and place to examine larger questions in American educational history as well as contribute to the history of higher education in Florida, which developed differently than in other states.

This historical case study used archival sources to examine this institution, and …

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

This second evaluation progress report concerns a 5-year project that links technology and the visual and performing arts with other subject areas to transform the education of K-12 students in Nebraska and nationwide. The report states that the project's focus is to develop curriculum models of engaged student learning using technology and resources of the Information Superhighway, and that a special emphasis has been placed on serving disadvantaged students in rural and urban areas. It also states that the project is being conducted by the Westside Community Schools in Omaha, Nebraska, and that five art museums are currently involved. The …

Traditional Culture And Science Education In Africa: Merely Language Games?, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

I want to begin today with two short personal remarks. My field of research at home is the cultural study of science education. In other words, I am interested in what is commonly called the culture of science and how that becomes interpreted in science education by teacher and curriculum. I am interested in the variation of culture among American students, cultural variations grounded in family and community and brought to the classroom. I am interested in the cultural interactions that are precipitated by the meeting of cultures in the science classroom. In my current work I use worldview concepts …

The Influence Of Student Gender On Teacher/Student Interactions In Esl Classrooms, Lisa Sybil Mann Sep 1996

The Influence Of Student Gender On Teacher/Student Interactions In Esl Classrooms, Lisa Sybil Mann

Dissertations and Theses

Because teacher I student interactions provide opportunities for correction and comprehensible input, a major component of successful language learning, equitable distribution of teacher I student interactions in the language classroom is an important element for the success of all second language students. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether differences in teacher I student interactions based on student gender occurred in four college English as a Second Language instructors' classrooms. The role of instructor gender and student ethnicity in teacher I student interaction content and frequency were also examined. Informal interviews were designed to determine the instructors' …
