The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between teacher retention and the nine subscales of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Teacher Satisfaction Survey (Schmitt & Loher, 1986) for teachers in Lutheran secondary schools. Both former and current Lutheran secondary teachers (262) were surveyed to identify sources of satisfaction levels that may induce teachers to leave Lutheran secondary education.
The survey instrument used was the Teacher Satisfaction Survey developed by the NASSP. The survey includes nine subscales of satisfaction: administration, compensation, opportunities for advancement, student responsibility and discipline, curriculum and job tasks, coworkers, parents and …

The purpose of the study was to investigate the construct validity of the two instruments measuring readiness in Situational Leadership: the Readiness Scales--Manager Rating Form and Staff Member Rating Form--developed by Hambleton, Blanchard, and Hersey (1977). The study examined the relationships between readiness and achievement motivation, and between readiness and faculty education and work experience. The study also explored the concurrent validity of the two instruments measuring McClelland's (1961) achievement motivation: The Achievement Orientation Scale and The NachNaff Scale. The respondents were 66 department chairs and 156 faculty from 12 comprehensive institutions in the South. Data on faculty readiness were …

An Examination Of The Leadership Of Administrators In Higher Education As Represented In The American Academic Novel From 1950 To 1990, Laura T. Barnett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the academic leadership as portrayed in the American academic novel from 1950 to 1990. Leadership positions from higher education (president, vice-president, dean, and chairperson) were examined in this analysis of 40 academic fiction novels. The leader behavior of the selected characters was classified, using the following categories: autocratic (telling), democratic (selling), participative (participating), delegative (delegating), situational (varying) and "other" (unclassifiable due to lack of information or criteria variance). The finding was that the majority of academic leaders, in the novels studied, behaved using an autocratic (telling) leadership behavior. Also, the majority of …

Selected Aspects Of The Secretary's Role In The Public Schools As Perceived By Principals, Teachers, And School Secretaries, Patty H. Richards
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare principals', teachers' and secretaries' perceptions regarding selected aspects of the school secretary's role in administering the public schools. A questionnaire, developed by the researcher, was sent to 465 principals, teachers, and school secretaries in the First Tennessee Development District, in Spring, 1991. Three hundred ninety-one questionnaires were returned for a response rate of 84%. Six null hypotheses were tested for significance at the.05 level. The one-way analysis of variance and the Student-Newman-Keuls statistical procedures were used to test the responses of the three groups of participants for significant differences. All the null …

Competencies Needed For Effective Church Leadership From The Perspective Of Current Pastors, Cecile Elizabeth Fransman Hewitt
Dissertations
Contemporary needs of the African-American church are both deeply spiritual and agonizingly physical, and the resultant burden of the church has never been more challenging. Today's needs in the church call for diverse leadership.
This study generated and measured the perception of importance of 22 competencies for effective leadership as pastors of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The study also sought to determine which of the competencies were performed, shared, delegated, or not performed at each responsive church. Finally, the study sought to determine the extent to which selected demographic factors were related to the perception of importance.
The perceptions …

The Relationship Between Power Bases And Conflict Management Styles Of Indonesia’S Formal Leaders, Wirawan
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the power bases and conflict management styles of Indonesia’s formal leaders. French and Raven’s (1959) theory of power was used to define the power bases. Thomas and Kilmann’s (1974) theory of conflict management was used to define the conflict management styles. The study assumed that Indonesia’s formal leaders used certain kinds of power bases and conflict management styles in their leadership, and their cultural background influenced their leadership behavior.
Three null hypotheses were proposed to guide the research: (1) that there was no correlation between power bases and conflict management styles of …

A Study Of The Effects On Second-Grade Students Of A Leadership Curriculum, Michael Frazee
A Study Of The Effects On Second-Grade Students Of A Leadership Curriculum, Michael Frazee
Dissertations
Investigators of leadership behavior have largely overlooked the period during early childhood when adjustment to the group is initially acquired and practiced. This study was designed to determine whether leadership skills could be taught to second-grade students. The purpose of the research was to determine the effectiveness of the Leadership Is Vital to Education (L.I.V.E.) (Lockett, 1982) leadership curriculum.
A major assumption in this study was that leadership development could be an appropriate outcome of the elementary school curriculum and could be facilitated by introducing a specific leadership-training component into the existing curriculum. The objective was to determine whether the …

Designing And Implementing A Development Program At Roanoke Valley Christian School., Philip H. Graybeal
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
As a ministry of Shenandoah Baptist Church, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools (RVCS), grew since its founding in 1973 to a size of 535 students (K-12) and 31 teachers. The administrative team consisted of the administrator, elementary principal, secondary principal, and part-time learning disability director. RVCS reached a plateau in its growth pattern as seen in enrollment statistics that showed a difference of no more than 18 students during any one year from the 1983-88 mean enrollment of 535. Records indicated that development was needed in public relations and recruitment materials, facility expansion, and non-tuition funding. During the process of the …
