Brain-based learning can positively impact student motivation, attitudes and academic achievement. Much of the research is situated in a quantitative paradigm designed to measure motivation, attitudes toward learning, and academic achievement. The purpose of the study was to investigate the extent to which teachers are aware of brain-based learning theory and applying the concepts of the theory to their teaching. The qualitative study utilized brain-based learning theory as a research framework. The study employed a semi-structured, face-to-face interview method to gain a better understanding of what information teachers currently know about brain-based learning and what they need in order to …

Computational Thinking Unplugged: Comparing The Impact On Confidence And Competence From Analog And Digital Resources In Computer Science Professional Development For Elementary Teachers, Christopher Harris

Education Doctoral

The demand for computer science instruction is increasing across the K-12 spectrum, but in many cases elementary teachers are ill prepared to teach the subject. Based on prior research showing a preference for analog interfaces, this study compared the impact of analog and digital interface modalities on teachers’ confidence and competence gains in professional development on computational thinking conceived within the framework of cognitive acceleration. The analog group used the Robot Turtles board game and the digital group used the Scratch Jr. app on iPads while receiving the same professional development content. A single-case experimental design approach with a multiple-baseline …

Examining Nonprofit Ceo Competencies And The Financial Sustainability Of Their Organizations: An Explanatory Sequential Mixed Methods Study, Daniele Lyman-Torres

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine correlations between the competencies of nonprofit CEOs in New York State and the financial sustainability of the organizations they lead. Nonprofit organizations face increasing demands for service (Norris-Tirrell, 2014) and fail to meet objectives because they fail to recruit and retain CEOs with the skills, education, and experience needed (Ahmed, 2005). The study examined what relationship, if any, exists between self-reported nonprofit CEO competencies and the financial sustainability of the organizations they lead. Nonprofit CEO competencies were measured using the identified Korn Ferry 4-D assessment (2015). Financial sustainability …

More than 80 million people in the United States play online video games, and this prevalent form of entertainment has enabled players from various geographic settings to interact in highly complex and realistic virtual worlds. However, despite the popularity of online gaming and the evolution of a socially oriented culture, the rapid growth of the industry has raised concerns among parents, educators, clinicians, and the general public about the potential consequences of online gaming. The proposal to classify Internet gaming disorder as a behavioral addiction has produced considerable debate as to whether the classification is empirically justified. Evidence suggests that …

An Examination Of Satisfaction, Gpa, And Retention Of First-Year College Students From Rural Communities At A Small Public Technical College, Timothy Moore

Education Doctoral

Individuals from rural communities are less likely to enroll in college and complete a degree than those from non-rural areas. Nationally, rural students comprise one-fifth of college enrollment, and evidence suggests this demographic group has unique needs which may influence retention. This quantitative study examined multiple years of data from the State University of New York Student Opinion Survey for students at a small, rural technical college in Upstate New York to determine if relationships existed between a college student’s graduating high school community type, student satisfaction, GPA, and retention at the beginning of the second year. Binary logistic regression …

Family Engagement: The Perspectives Of Low-Income Families On The Family Engagement Strategies Of Urban Schools, Don-Lee M. Applyrs

Education Doctoral

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of low-income families, including family engagement with their child’s urban school. This study employed several techniques for the purpose of data collection including demographic profile questionnaires, an in-depth, semi-structured focus group interview containing six participants, and one semi-structured one-on-one interview. This study included seven participants obtained utilizing purposive sampling. The interview protocol was designed with open-ended questions aligned to attempt to explore …

Leaving An Expert And Returning A Novice: Exploring The Transition Of Clinical Nurse Experts To Novice Nurse Educators, Elizabeth Woytowicz

Education Doctoral

The ability of nursing programs to educate future registered professional nurses is being hindered by a shortage of nurse educators. With this shortage, healthcare systems that employ and rely on registered nurses will encounter a decreased number of new nurses entering the profession. As a result, the shortage in both areas will affect the safety of patients in need of nursing care. Understanding the lived experiences of novice nurse educators can provide evidence of the challenges and positive factors that are encountered during the transition process. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of …

Perceptions Of Unemployed African American Men On Labor Market Accessibility: Implications For Economic And Workforce Development Policy, Terrence Byrd El

Education Doctoral

Since the 1950s, federal government policies have developed anti-poverty programs that attempted to address urban joblessness among African American males. However, these programs have resulted in discriminatory social practices that increased marginalization and exclusion of this population. In addition, structural changes in urban economies and shifts in labor market dynamics have also contributed to the growing number of unemployed African American males over the last four decades. With the increase in the frequency of joblessness among urban African American males, their communities have experienced the emergence of a new element to poverty, an element implicating an underclass. The emergence of …

Parents’ Experiences, Perceptions, And Responses To Bullying In An Urban Public Elementary School, Leslie Boyd Smith

Education Doctoral

Parents’ ability to interpret and respond to acts of bullying is a complex issue (Sawyer, Mishna, Pepler, and Weiner, 2011). The current research recommendations stress the need for research to include parents and their responses to bullying. This study examined factors that influenced parents’ experiences, perceptions, and responses to bullying. The sample size consisted of 940 parents with children that attended an elementary school in an urban public school. A triadic reciprocal determinism model was recognized as a proper framework for this study and served to examine the continuous reciprocal interaction between behavior, cognitive, and environment influences (Bandura, 1989). The …
