Strategies To Improve Executive Functioning In Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Nicole Brennan

Culminating Projects in Special Education

Students with ADHD and executive function deficits experience academic and social and emotional difficulties throughout their school day. This paper summarizes research that has been provided regarding strategies to improve executive function skills in students with a diagnosis of ADHD. The studies in this paper were conducted within the last seven years and are presented in groups based on types of interventions of exercise and sensory integration, mindfulness, and computer based programs. The areas that I have chosen to give more attention to are those that can easily be implemented and practiced in a variety of school settings including the …

The Physical Therapeutic Benefits Of Hippotherapy On Children With Physical Disabilities, Heather Brand Aug 2018

The Physical Therapeutic Benefits Of Hippotherapy On Children With Physical Disabilities, Heather Brand

Culminating Projects in Special Education

Hippotherapy is a great choice of treatment for children with physical disabilities. It can improve gross motor function, balance, spasticity, posture, and gait, as reviewed in this paper. It can also have benefits for many other areas in the child’s life, physically or mentally. This form of therapy may be so effective because children often are able to connect to animals and it is fun to ride a horse; they may be more motivated in doing the therapy activities than with a traditional form of treatment.

School-Based Mental Health Services And Programs: A Review Of The Literature, Kelly Klima

Culminating Projects in Special Education

In Chapter 1, a rationale, a statement regarding the focus of my paper, and historical backgrounds of both community-based mental health services and the history surrounding school-based mental health (SBMH) services were provided. In Chapter 2, I review 15 studies dated between 2003 and 2017 addressing the results of school-based mental health programs involving either an in-school parental component or services delivered by clinicians in school settings and the implications SBMH presents for the educational system and its personnel. Studies reviewed are summarized in chronological order and include both quantitative data pertaining to changes in behavioral and academic qualities in …

The Comparison Of The Effects Of Direct Instruction And Project-/Problem-Based Learning To Teach Basic Math Skills For Students With Low-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Maiko Hosokawa Jun 2018

The Comparison Of The Effects Of Direct Instruction And Project-/Problem-Based Learning To Teach Basic Math Skills For Students With Low-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Maiko Hosokawa

Culminating Projects in Special Education

The attention toward the mathematics achievement of U.S. students in general education, when they took the national and international assessments, has risen (Przychodzin et al., 2004). However, a limited amount of research focusing on effective mathematics instruction was completed (Baker, Gersten, & Lee, 2002).

Mathematics is an important academic area for students with disabilities, including autism, because people with disabilities can increase work or volunteering opportunities and enrich their post-secondary life if they perform functional math skills well (Brown & Snell, 2000). However, Su et al. (2010) described that few studies focusing on learning strategies to support students with autism …

Addressing The Multiple Needs Of Students With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, James Garcia Jun 2018

Addressing The Multiple Needs Of Students With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, James Garcia

Culminating Projects in Special Education

This paper investigates research literature on mild traumatic brain injury and supports for students, guardians, and the implications for educators. Students who experience mild traumatic brain injury will encounter a variety of symptoms (i.e., dizziness, amnesia, headache, sensitivity to sound) throughout their recovery. Students may also experience difficulties in their academic performance: occlusion errors, academic dysfunction, and deficits in long-term cognitive control. Medical staff, guardians, students, and educators must support students, on an individual basis, to serve the multiple needs of students recovering from mild traumatic brain injury.

Eleven studies published between 2011 and 2017 were examined and chosen for inclusion in the Chapter 2 literature review. Studies were chosen if they evaluated the effectiveness of a specific intervention treatment used to reduce behaviors associated with anxiety in students diagnosed with ASD. Studies evaluating effectiveness of medication treatments were not included in the review. Lastly, studies were not limited to the United States, however, most studies were domestic in nature.

Addressing The Needs Of Post-Institutionalized Children In The Classroom, Debra Newhouse May 2018

Addressing The Needs Of Post-Institutionalized Children In The Classroom, Debra Newhouse

Culminating Projects in Special Education

As parents are unprepared for the challenges their post-institutionalized children bring into their families, schools are often unprepared when these challenges enter the classroom. Educators are often unaware of how adverse childhood experiences can lead to behaviors in the classroom. These children are often referred to special education for evaluation and found to meet criteria for a disability category. Special education teachers are providing services to more internationally adopted children. Given the increase in this population, educators must be thoughtful of the pre-adoptive history of the child and how it affects student performance and achievement. Literature review provides more information …

Interventions To Reduce Self-Injurious Behaviors In Youth With Autism, Joshua Sasse

Culminating Projects in Special Education

The high prevalence rate of individuals with autism who display self-injurious behaviors, coupled with the growing number of youth with an autism diagnosis, has created a need for an expanded array of assistive options. This starred paper examines, through literature review, the effectiveness of interventions on self-injurious behaviors in individuals with autism. Behavior, and non-behavior, based interventions are considered from domestic and international sources. Behavior based interventions continue to be an effective option that can be applied to a wide spectrum of students, however there was significant effective use of alternative intervention strategies for specific individual applications. This holds true …

Identifying Learning Disabilities In English Learners, Eunsil Kang May 2018

Identifying Learning Disabilities In English Learners, Eunsil Kang

Culminating Projects in Special Education

Identifying how to best help a student learn and reach their goals is one of the most important tasks an educator needs to do each year. This is especially true as the number of language learners coming to American schools continues to rise each year. (Sullivan, 2011) The purpose of this study was to review the literature that examines how to differentiate between learners who struggle in acquiring English as a second language and English learners who have a learning disability. When distinguishing between ELLs and Special Education students, however, it is easy to make errors that negatively affect the …

The Relationship Between Family Factors And Academic Achievement Levels Among Hispanic Immigrant Students In The U.S., Hyojong Sohn

Culminating Projects in Special Education

This literature review focused on research regarding the Hispanic population, currently the largest racial minority group in the U.S., and provided perspectives on the four types of family factors which affect academic success among Hispanic immigrant students. The findings in Chapter 2 revealed that each family factor was significantly related to student performance; for instance, Hispanic students who speak more English in the home demonstrated higher academic achievement levels. However, other factors including financial stress, parent-child conflict, and residential instability negatively impacted students’ outcomes. Future studies should consider these findings more carefully and in relation to one another in order …
