A Comparison Of Two Teaching Methodologies In A Middle School Algebra Classroom, Kristina L. Tucky

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study was an attempt to determine if a change in teaching methodology would have a positive effect on the outcome, as measured by a chapter test, of an algebra class. The research involved a pretest-posttest control group design of two sections of an eighth grade algebra class. The control group received the standard instructional practice, known as the "direct method", while the treatment group received the same "direct method" and additional "constructive" methodology in the form of manipulatives and group reading of the subject matter. No statistical difference was found between the means of the two classes on the …

Retaining Nevada's High Risk Youth In High School, Pat Spadaro

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The primary goal of dropout prevention programs is to prevent as many students from leaving school as possible. The percentage of individuals leaving Nevada schools without obtaining a regular diploma is among the highest in the nation (Schmidt & Barr, 2004, p. 9). The primary methodology employed in this project was Content Analysis (Leedy & Ormrod, 2005). In Content Analysis, the researcher identifies specific examples of selected characteristics in similar documents defining the characteristics more clearly. Each item is then broken down into smaller manageable segments to be analyzed separately (Leedy & Ormrod, 2005, p. 142). This research reviewed documents …

Inclusion Models In Elementary Physical Education, Wendy Storm Dec 2006

Inclusion Models In Elementary Physical Education, Wendy Storm

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Over the last 30 years the number of disabled students being placed in regular education settings has increased dramatically, as has the severity of their disabilities (Greenwood & French, 2000). With the integration of students into regular education classrooms, practitioners are challenged to provide adequate supports to insure beneficial learning environments. According to Public Law 105-17 all students must be provided elementary physical education (pecentral.org). The law does not distinguish between students who are classified as "“special education students" and those who are classified as general education students. This study investigates the development and implementation of inclusion practices for special …

Geographic Adventures: An Interdisciplinary Fourth Grade Geography Unit, Janet Campbell Nov 2006

Geographic Adventures: An Interdisciplinary Fourth Grade Geography Unit, Janet Campbell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The need for increased geographic literacy in an age of globalization and the decline in geographic literacy among people in the United States have created an educational challenge that should be addressed aggressively in the K-12 curriculum. One roadblock to improvement of geographic instruction is the subject centered instruction designed to accommodate standardized testing. The isolation of subject materials in the educational process limits students' understanding and topic relevance. Canatsey (1999) suggested that the study of geography can create relationships among multiple subjects and that the resulting connections lead to a greater understanding of geography, as well as the other …

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Differentiated instruction (DI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are philosophies that serve as teaching methodologies that address the needs of diverse learners in the regular classroom. Furthermore, DI can be used to engage students in instruction through different modalities, appeal to different interests, and use varied rates of instruction along with varied degrees of complexity. Also, UDL is an extension of DI, wherein the teacher provides alternatives that are built into the curriculum and suitable for most students. Additionally, the UDL model can be supported by the six principles of effective curriculum (Kame'emui & Simmons, 1999) to design curricular …

Shaping Academic Success: Understanding The Interrelationship Between Intelligence Beliefs, Motivation, Learning, And Achievement, Susan Harris Warner

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The findings of recent studies in the area of achievement indicate that the motivation to learn contributes to academic success, apart from intelligence, individually and significantly. While the early motivational theorists concluded that cognitive skills and abilities were factors of intelligence, and that behavioral and psychosocial attributes were factors of motivation, the more contemporary motivational researchers have found that the belief one holds about intelligence influences both cognition and behavior, more powerfully than previously estimated. Presented here are the main social cognitive components of motivation: (a) competence beliefs and self-efficacy, (b) attributions, (c) intrinsic motivation, and (d) achievement goals. The …

Teachers' Attitudes Toward Inclusion In The Regular Classroom, Rebecca J. Kaisler May 2006

Teachers' Attitudes Toward Inclusion In The Regular Classroom, Rebecca J. Kaisler

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Historically, individuals and members of specific groups have always been denied equality in the society in which they live. Denials for equality have been based upon a person's: (a) gender, such as women's suffrage (b) race, such as Rosa Parks and her fearless refusal to give up her seat on a bus; and (c) age, the current trend of some companies to enforce a mandatory retirement age upon employees, even if they are still productive. Currently, a similar equality issue is at stake because of the policy to include disabled students into the regular classroom with their nondisabled peers. As …

A Teacher's Guide To Understanding Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Alaina L. Hollis

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Over the past decade, cognitive and behavior problems, characterized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, have affected millions of children around the world. Collectively, these symptoms are referred to as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; [American Psychiatric Association, 1994), and it is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder (Barkley, 1990). The collective problems that define ADHD contribute to one of the most complex childhood disorders of this time (Goldstein & Goldstein, 1998). Typically, the symptoms of ADHD are exacerbated in school settings where high demands are placed on children. Because ADHD is so prevalent in academia, teachers need to …

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator And Learning In Secondary Classrooms, Holly Frank Jan 2006

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator And Learning In Secondary Classrooms, Holly Frank

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Students and educators have different learning styles based on personality type. Because many of the 16 types identified in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator may be present in any given classroom, it is important for educators be aware of their own personality type and related learning and teaching styles, and also be able to recognize their students' behaviors and learning preferences based on their knowledge of the MBTI and its dichotomous pairs of preferences. In this project, this researcher attempted to create a way to equip educators with information about the implications of individual personality types and learning styles in …

Balanced Teaching: The Role Of Caring In Effective Teaching, Holly A. Nase

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Despite a rich history of research and reform, educational scholars have not yet formulated a working definition of effective teaching that encompasses the complexities of the learning process. Today, as policy makers demand measurable outcomes, teachers are increasingly aware of their need to be effective in motivating their students to achieve. In order to do so, teachers need to establish balanced practices that incorporate all three of the domains of learning: (a) affective, (b) behavioral, and (c) cognitive. Currently, the emphasis is on the behavioral and cognitive aspects of learning, but, frequently, the affective aspects are ignored. However, affect plays …
