With the increasing shortage of quality teachers, alternative certification programs have become a major source of attracting professionals from other fields and training them for the teaching profession. As a possible source of quality teachers, military retirees represent a large pool of prospective candidates. Despite their experience, and because of their alternative teacher training, the quality of their classroom performance is often questioned by both teacher unions and teacher training institutions.

The purpose of the study was to describe the operational form of the innovation--Integrated Thematic Instruction within the context of its implementation.

An embedded single case study design was used to carry out this qualitative study, with Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI) as the unit of the case study. The questions that guided the study were: What does ITI look like when implemented by the teacher? What are the contextual elements of implementation of this program? What variations are found in the implementation of this innovation by different teachers?

Although most portions of this book are applicable to the teaching of refugees in general, this work is meant to address specifically the needs of those engaged in teaching members of the Lao ethnic group of Laos. In this paper are discussed, first, the unique problems facing the teacher who finds himself teaching technical English. Second, ways in which that teacher can prepare himself to most effectively deal with these problems (used here in the sense of tasks to be mastered) are offered, together with practical strategies for establishing and maintaining his professional and emotional equilibrium. Finally, specific suggestions are made for presenting technical terminology to ESL students, as well as improving their general English language proficiency.
