An Exploratory Study To Understand Elementary School Students’ Conceptions Of Food Chains, Shelby Snowden
An Exploratory Study To Understand Elementary School Students’ Conceptions Of Food Chains, Shelby Snowden
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Research has shown that elementary school is a critical time to pique children’s interest in science. However, many enrichment activities known to pique this interest in young children are not available to students of low socioeconomic status, English Language Learners, racial minorities, and students with disabilities. This has encouraged many higher education institutions to develop STEM outreach programs. Because of the cognitive gap between STEM professionals and young children and the logistics of implementing student-centered activities in heterogeneous classrooms, programs usually consist of activities that impress students with “sophisticated” science but are beyond the cognitive levels of most students and …
Assessing Stem Literacy In An Informal Learning Environment, Maureen Ann Lafemina Cavalcanti
Assessing Stem Literacy In An Informal Learning Environment, Maureen Ann Lafemina Cavalcanti
Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences
This mixed methods study investigated methods for assessing STEM literacy amongst middle grades students participating in an informal learning environment, specifically, a summer STEM camp. Adopting a situated perspective on STEM literacy, this dissertation employed psychometric techniques and discourse analysis to answer the overarching research question: How can STEM literacy amongst middle school students be assessed in the context of a summer STEM camp? An integrated review of literacy within and across STEM disciplines first offered a new direction for conceptualizing STEM literacy. With this understanding, subsequent research methods applied novel approaches for investigating STEM literacy in the context of …

Attending High School Algebra I: In Search Of Well-Managed, Engaging, Culturally Relevant, And Caring Classrooms, Cassandra Dunn Gannett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The inequities in learning between the rich and the poor have become pervasive in United States. This is evidenced by the high school graduation rates, college attendance percentages, and employment statistics. Upon another wave of reform, the Common Core State Standards in mathematics are currently being adopted in hopes of increasing learning for all students, with a focus on college and career readiness. This study is intent on finding ways to remedy the inequities in mathematics between the high income and low income schools by focusing on one of the great glass ceilings to high school graduation and beyond, high …

Extraordinary Leaders For Unordinary Times: A Grounded Theory Study, Doris E. Candelarie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Across the United States, school districts are working to turnaround their lowest performing schools in order to meet the requirements of Adequate Yearly Progress mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. These failing schools are facing district, state, and federal sanctions of closure, takeover, or restructuring. A new phenomenon emerging from this dire state in education is the turnaround leader. An educational turnaround leader is one who leads a high poverty, low performing school to dramatic improvement. Limited research exists on educational turnaround leaders, but what is available hypothesizes that turnaround leaders have different characteristics and qualities. …

How Can Seattle Better Meet The Educational Needs Of The Culturally Deprived Child, David V. Ward
Graduate Student Research Papers
The four purposes of this study are: (1) to gain a better understanding of the characteristics, problems, and attitudes of the culturally deprived youth in our society; (2) to determine how Seattle, by better understanding these characteristics, problems, and attitudes, might meet the educational needs of the culturally deprived child; (3) to explore what other large cities in the United States have done in meeting the educational needs of the culturally deprived child; and (4) to describe how Seattle has used the experiences of other large cities in helping it to formulate its educational program for the culturally deprived child.
Perceptions Of The Feminine Role And Some Related Problems In Counseling Girls, Lanorjane G. Pauline
Perceptions Of The Feminine Role And Some Related Problems In Counseling Girls, Lanorjane G. Pauline
Graduate Student Research Papers
Our culture presents many barriers that prevent women from using their intellect for the greatest good. As counselors, we need to begin freeing ourselves from the limits of narrow and inappropriately differentiated masculine and feminine roles. An awareness of the reasons for and the extent of these prejudices will help to understand ourselves and thus the people with whom we work. Through understanding the pressures of our society on the jobs we do, we can gain knowledge enabling us to use more of our intellectual resources and thus to plan better for today while looking to the future.
