As the academic year 2019-2020 concludes, we find ourselves in a place for reflection as the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we function. We went from the lowest unemployment rate in many years to the highest unemployment rate in a matter of weeks. This year has been a lesson in agility and resilience. The Career Center staff successfully navigated the transition in delivering remote services in a matter of days, we did not have any down time during this transition period and continued to meet with students. The Career Center engages and educates students in their career development process. Our programming reflects our mission and the Career Center staff is honored to be able to assist students with their career readiness every day. A focus for this year was technology improvement and implementation. Our partnership with the University of Maine at Machias continues to evolve and their students are now able to participate in our presentations that are hosted in the Career Center Library. We don’t always know when we make that difference but we do know that planting the seeds of change will have an impact. The Career Center has had another busy year. The economy and the job market have continued to show signs of improvement and this is reflected in our increased level of activity with employers. This year there has been a huge increase in the number of job listings (from 2413 in FY14 to 3037 in FY15) and the number of companies recruiting on campus increased by 4 (from 39 companies in FY13 to 43 companies in FY14). While youth with autism represent a small percentage of all vocational rehabilitation (VR) closures, the number who closed out of VR more than tripled between 2003 and 2008 (see Institute for Community Inclusion Data Note 26). As increasing numbers of youth with autism are accessing VR services, it is important to understand how they are using these services and the relationship of these services to outcomes and costs.
