U.S. Student Achievement From A Global Perspective, Thomas Loveless

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Tom Loveless, a former sixth-grade teacher and Harvard public policy professor, is an expert on student achievement, education policy, and reform in K-12 schools. He also is a member of the National Math Advisory Panel. What do we know about U.S. students' academic achievement compared to students in other countries? The talk will present the latest evidence on U.S. performance on international tests and examine long term trends. In addition, the performance of Nevada and Las Vegas students will be reviewed in the context of national and international assessments.

The Upjohn Institute conducted an economic impact study of a universal, place-based scholarship program for La Crosse, Wisconsin. This study examines the possibility of developing a program similar to the Kalamazoo Promise for the La Crosse area. The La Crosse area is facing a population decline, growing concentrations of low-income students, an aging infrastructure in the region’s largest school district, and regional sprawl that is consuming farmland and natural assets while creating new challenges of congestion and service delivery. As a response to these issues, this study explores the potential impact of a universal, place-based scholarship program.

This interim report presents baseline information from all 26 regions. It reflects the status of regional activities as of the summer of 2008, when many regions were in the initial stage of implementation. A senior design (Capstone) project for three mechanical engineering technology students at Old Dominion University is described. A prototype design is presented to perform the functional test of a leak-preventive toilet system. There are two major leaks in the toilet water tank. In the first case, leaking occurs when the seal in the water tank becomes aged. The leak is very easy to detect visually, since the outside of the tank and the floor becomes wet. In the second case, leak occurs when the flapper valve can't complete shut off the water, due to corrosion or damage of the rubber …

Since the mid 1980s more than a dozen communities in Nebraska have carried out the Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program that is outlined in this handbook. Without exception both the communities and the businesses involved have reported positive results. The BRE program is a stuctured, locally implemented, action oriented economic development project aimed at stimulating local economic development ard growth by helping existing business. This handbook is designed as a guide for community leaders planning to carry out a Business Retention and Expansion program. Karbonit was accompanying Sherburne who was working on the design and development of the University of Maine, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, assistance program in wildlife training and conservation education to Tanzania’s National Parks. Sherburne, who has worked in Tanzania for several years, was there most recently in 1988 and 1989 working on the parks project. He serves as the Director of International Natural Resources and Agricultural Programs at the University of Maine.
