First Record Of Fungal Diversity In The Tropical And Warm-Temperate Middle Miocene Climate Optimum Forests Of Eurasia, Jennifer M.K. O'Keefe
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
The middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO) was the warmest interval of the last 23 million years and is one of the best analogs for proposed future climate change scenarios. Fungi play a key role in the terrestrial carbon cycle as dominant decomposers of plant debris, and through their interactions with plants and other organisms as symbionts, parasites, and endobionts. Thus, their study in the fossil record, especially during the MMCO, is essential to better understand biodiversity changes and terrestrial carbon cycle dynamics in past analogous environments, as well as to model future ecological and climatic scenarios. The fossil record also …

Open Educational Resources In History: A State-Of-The-Field Essay, Katherine Tsan
Publications and Research
History practitioners are making steady progress adopting, adapting and creating open educational resources. However, most historians do not have a holistic view of the materials that exist in the open sphere due to poor discoverability and professional standards that still hamper their uptake. This state-of-the-field article discusses the challenges and opportunities of engaging with history OERs as divided into three categories: 1) textbooks and teaching modules, 2) informational websites and interactive experiences, and 3) digital tools for collaborative research. The flexibility and adaptability of these resources, afforded by their open licenses, are key points in their prospects for longevity and …

Utilization Of Non-Verbal Language In Engine Room Training, Emi Yutaka, Muramatsu Nagisa
Proceedings of the International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
The Engine control room in a vessel is covered with a soundproof wall. Therefore, crews can not communicate with each other with normal voices. Therefore, crews in the engine room communicated with colleagues by hand signals instead of loud voices in the noisy space when there was no control room yet in a vessel. An example of a hand signal that Japanese crews used to use in the past was putting your right hand into your left armpit, which means “measure”. One of the advantages of hand signals is that they are a useful communication tool in such a noisy …

Student Teachers' Usage And Access Of Electronic Resources In The National Digital Library Of India (Ndli) During The Covid-19 Outbreak, Deivam Muniyandi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur created the National Digital Library of India (NDLI). It is a single-window portal that accumulates and collates information from prestigious Indian and international educational institutions, as well as other relevant sources. It is free and accessible to the public. The objective of the study was to find out the student teachers' usage and access of the NDLI during the Covid-19 outbreak. The online survey method was employed for the study. The investigator designed the questionnaire in Google Forms. The researcher sent the questionnaire about the National Digital Library of India via …
Linguistically Responsive Instruction In Corequisite Courses At Community Colleges, Heather B. Finn, Sharon Avni
Linguistically Responsive Instruction In Corequisite Courses At Community Colleges, Heather B. Finn, Sharon Avni
Publications and Research
English Learners (ELs) attend community colleges at a greater rate than four-year schools, making community colleges primary sites of ESL education in American higher education. These institutions’ recent embrace of the corequisite structure – a pairing of a non-credit developmental course with a credit-bearing disciplinary content course in order to accelerate students’ progress in their coursework – has direct implications for ELs. As corequisites are enacted in a wide range of content areas, professors will need to attend to students’ language development in a wide range of disciplinary courses. This qualitative study applies Linguistically Responsive Instruction as a framework to …

Needs Analysis Of English For Specific Purposes (Esp) Courses In Vocational Higher Education, Nurmala Elmin Simbolon
Proceedings of the International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
Due to the ratification of Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for fishing vessel personnel 1995 (STCW-F 1995), Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) should be incorporated in the curriculum of the Maritime Education Training (MET) institutions for fishing vessel industries. This study examined the curriculum of a Maritime English course in vocational higher education in Indonesia. Data were extracted from the SMCP document, past Maritime English examination papers of Certificate of Competency, and the current syllabus of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses. Interviews with three seafarers who had work experience in fishing vessels were also conducted. The SMCP document …

Proceedings of the International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
The paper is devoted to the analysis of typical phonological mistakes made by Russian-speaking maritime cadets and the teaching tools enabling maritime English instructors to correct them and to improve the phonological competence of maritime students. Today, addressing the issues of foreign accent in the speech of maritime professionals, one cannot underestimate the importance of the correct implementation of the prosodic system of the language being studied, since the quality of the implementation of a coherent text is undoubtedly the result of the adequate use in speech of both segmented and suprasegmental language means, that is separate phonemes and intonation. …

"What’S Wrong With These Folks?” Developing Intercultural Competency As The Key To “Merge” Different World Views, Carmen Chirea-Ungureanu
Proceedings of the International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21
The main problem of working in multilingual crew onboard ships is that it is a double-edged sword. While it can boost the number of ideas achieved due to various perspectives coming together to solve a problem, it can also lead to higher levels of conflict other than what may be in conventional crews. If crew members are unable to set aside their differences and communicate effectively, that generates mutual understanding, the solution of bringing together all the most excellent minds in the world will not have the ability to solve that problem. When seafarers with a single cultural perspective on …
