Ua3/9/5 Partnerships For Progress: Linking Higher Education & Economic Development, Wku President's Office, Gary A. Ransdell

WKU Archives Records

Speech delivered by WKU president Gary Ransdell at the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices. In response to Governor Patton's challenges to create Programs of Distinction and enhance the state's capacity for economic development, we, at Western, have created a series of applied science centers. These centers are directing faculty talent toward creating a relevant curriculum in the sciences, toward solving environmental and material problems which limit economic development, and toward creating practice-based experiences for students. A by-product of these centers is a strengthened core curriculum which brings the applied sciences into focus for all WKU students.

Noises Off, School Of Performing Arts Dec 2001

Noises Off, School Of Performing Arts

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series

Michaet Frayn's wonderful Broadway hit is a farce about farce that takes the cliches of the genre and shakes them inventively through a series of kaleidoscopic patterns. Never missing a trick, it has as its first act a pastiche of traditional farce; as its second, a contemporary variant of the formula; as its third, an elaborate undermining of it. The play opens with a touring company dress'rehearsing Nothing On, a conventional farce. Mixing mockery and homage, the author heaps into this play within- a-play a hilarious melee of stock characters and situations. In a continuing effort to appeal to a …

Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman Dec 2001

Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Our thinking is unavoidably constrained by our conceptual structures. To the extent that we reflect on and reconstruct our concepts, however, we can sharpen our thinking. The first section of this article considers the nature of concepts, highlighting a standard distinction between prototype-based and formal concepts.

Drawing on these insights from cognitive psychology, the second section suggests that the ability to recognize and understand genocides is greatly restricted by Holocaust-based conceptions of genocide. In turn one can enhance one’s understanding via the construction and application of formal concepts of genocide.

Extending this argument, I observe in the third section that …
