Ua3/9/5 Partnerships For Progress: Linking Higher Education & Economic Development, Wku President's Office, Gary A. Ransdell
WKU Archives Records
Speech delivered by WKU president Gary Ransdell at the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices. In response to Governor Patton's challenges to create Programs of Distinction and enhance the state's capacity for economic development, we, at Western, have created a series of applied science centers. These centers are directing faculty talent toward creating a relevant curriculum in the sciences, toward solving environmental and material problems which limit economic development, and toward creating practice-based experiences for students. A by-product of these centers is a strengthened core curriculum which brings the applied sciences into focus for all WKU students.

Stakeholder Opinions On Accessible Informational Products Helpful In Building Positive, Practical Solutions To Behavioral Challenges Of Individuals With Mental Retardation And/Or Autism, Michael B. Ruef, Ann P. Turnbull
Graduate Studies in Education
The purpose of the study was twofold: (a) to explore the perceptions of administrators and policy makers, families, friends, individuals with challenging behavior and mental retardation and/or autism, researchers, and teachers regarding current behavioral information and dissemination and (b) to elicit suggestions on the kinds of userfriendly, low-cost informational products that they thought would be most helpful in increasing quality of life while reducing or eliminating behavioral challenges in individuals with disabilities. A qualitative method of inquiry using telephone focus groups and individual interviews was used. The study points to the importance of receiving condensed positive behavioral support information on …

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series
Michaet Frayn's wonderful Broadway hit is a farce about farce that takes the cliches of the genre and shakes them inventively through a series of kaleidoscopic patterns. Never missing a trick, it has as its first act a pastiche of traditional farce; as its second, a contemporary variant of the formula; as its third, an elaborate undermining of it. The play opens with a touring company dress'rehearsing Nothing On, a conventional farce. Mixing mockery and homage, the author heaps into this play within- a-play a hilarious melee of stock characters and situations. In a continuing effort to appeal to a …

Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman
Conceptual Constraints On Thinking About Genocide, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Our thinking is unavoidably constrained by our conceptual structures. To the extent that we reflect on and reconstruct our concepts, however, we can sharpen our thinking. The first section of this article considers the nature of concepts, highlighting a standard distinction between prototype-based and formal concepts. Drawing on these insights from cognitive psychology, the second section suggests that the ability to recognize and understand genocides is greatly restricted by Holocaust-based conceptions of genocide. In turn one can enhance one’s understanding via the construction and application of formal concepts of genocide. Extending this argument, I observe in the third section that …

Review Of: Spanish Grammar And Spanish Reading Comprehension Cd Roms, Shaw N. Gynan
Modern & Classical Languages
Spanish Grammar and Spanish Reading Comprehension were tested on a Macintosh G4 400 MHz, 1024 x 768 display, 128 MB RAM, Apple CD/DVD. Both programs are designed for use by high school, college, and adult education students. Installation on the Mac is a very simple matter of inserting the disk and double-clicking on the icon that appears, which invokes the program. The screen goes black, meaning that the main Apple navigation bar is no longer available, and a window appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen displaying a menu with two options, Spanish Grammar and Comprehensive Spanish …
