The University Libraries at Grand Valley State University successfully advocated for inclusion of the 'Experiences with Information Literacy' module in our Winter 2016 administration of NSSE, the National Survey of Student Engagement. Overall, summary responses for our participating students compared positively to the aggregate means for all participating Large Public institutions in the same cohort. However, further analysis of responses broken out by individual colleges within the university revealed an interesting picture of students in GVSU's College of Engineering & Computing, perhaps indicating that their educational experience at GVSU is qualitatively different from that of their peers in other academic …

Incorporating technology into the physical education curriculum is becoming a popular strategy in which teachers can assess, motivate, and provide feedback to students regarding their physical activity participation during class. The purpose of this exploratory study was to gain a greater understanding of high school students’ perceptions of using heart rate monitors during physical education class. Qualitative data were collected through focus groups with students who had utilized heart rate monitors during the previous year of physical education class. A Coordinated School Health Program maximizes a school’s positive interaction among health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling/psychological/social services, health school environment, health promotion for staff, and family and community involvement. The purpose of this semester project is for undergraduate health education students to (1) explain the Coordinated School Health Program, (2) assess local schools’ health programs and policies using the School Health Index, (3) develop a School Health Improvement Plan, and (4) present their findings and recommendations for improving their schools’ physical activity, nutrition, tobacco prevention, asthma, and safety policies and programs.

Operating from three distinct but interlocking perspectives, this session will cover the lived experiences of three librarians (Black woman archivist, a White woman anti-racist public librarian, and a Black woman academic librarian) navigating collection development and collection development policies in a profession that is 85.2% White. National and state surveys of school sun protection policies and practices demonstrate that being a member of a SunSmart Program improves sun protection practices in primary schools, often lead by Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers. Australia’s major Sunsmart program implemented in primary schools has largely focused on limiting children’s exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. The present paper reports on a study that examined the contribution of lexical frequency to lexical diversity in narrative texts composed by 119 multilingual and monolingual English-speaking students enrolled in first-year college writing courses. The Measure of Textual Lexical Diversity (MTLD) quantified lexical diversity and the BNC-COCA 25 strand in Lextutor’s VocabProfile Compleat sorted the words according to frequency band. Overall, results from statistical analyses indicated that sample’s lexical diversity was not significantly impacted by the use of high-frequency (1,000–3,000 bands) or low-frequency (9,000+ bands) terms. Instead, texts showed greater differences in the mid-frequency (3,000–9,000) bands (p<0.05). There were also …

In this paper, we examine experience, identity, and their intersections. Working from an autoethnographic positionality, we investigate the insufficiencies of language and the limitations of any given researcher with an intent to address multiple realities and their respective interpretations of meaning. Autoethnographic narratives with the use of visual, written, and multimedia representations further acknowledge the dilemmas of qualitative researchers when they cannot fully describe subjectivities in research. What is deemed to be valid research is often indicative of a theoretical framework that aggressively seeks to invalidate other perspectives and ways of knowing. This paper was to investigate urgent issues in qualitative research, specifically the ontological conundrum that researchers commonly encountered in depicting experience and social reality. The turn to “experience” has expanded the modes of qualitative research by hearing “marginalized” voices, and thus increasing cultural awareness. Based on the review over multiple approaches to “experience” to enrich conversation in qualitative research, three major approaches to “experience” were identified, drawn from phenomenology, narrative inquiry, and critical ethnographic studies. The author introduces an aesthetic-inspired afterschool curriculum in the urban context in the United States and theorizes the meaning of active citizenship and community. This study identifies and explores social influences on the college choice process of Filipino American and Southeast Asian American high school seniors in an urban Midwestern setting. In an effort to contribute more depth to the knowledge regarding college choice among Filipino Americans and Southeast Asian Americans, this study engaged seven high school seniors in a photo elicitation study, allowing the students to tell their own stories of their pathways to college. This paper explores how student affairs practitioners may engage in critical cultural praxis through participatory action research (PAR). As authors, both researchers and practitioners, we partnered with one another to conduct a needs assessment of Asian American students through PAR methods at a university in the northeast United States. Unfortunately, the PAR project as initially designed did not come to fruition. School-based mental health (SBMH) research often underplays the crucial role that teachers play in supporting student mental health, even as teachers often find themselves encountering student mental health issues.
