A Training Framework And Follow-Up Observations For Multiculturally Inclusive Teaching: Is Believing That We Are Emphasizing Diversity Enough?, Joelle D. Elicker, Mindi N. Thompson, Andrea F. Snell, Allison L. O'Malley

Alison L. O'Malley

The authors present a theoretically and empirically grounded training for multiculturally inclusive teaching for new instructors. After implementing this training, qualitative data were gathered from instructors to identify their experience of the training and concerns related to incorporating issues of diversity into their classrooms (Study 1). At the end of the semester immediately following the training, quantitative data were gathered from instructors and their students to examine the interaction between students’ and instructors’ perceived diversity emphasis (Study 2). When allowed to choose the extent to which they incorporated issues of diversity in their classes, the instructors differentially reported emphasizing diversity …

Evaluation And Revision Of An Introduction To Experiential Rotations Course, Eliza A. Dy, Sarah Nisly

Sarah A. Nisly

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the perceived student value of topics taught in Butler University’s Introduction to Experiential Rotations (RX500) course, implement course revisions to address any perceived weaknesses, and to reassess the course following implementation of those course revisions. Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) students from Butler University’s 2012 doctorate of pharmacy class were initially surveyed to assess the perceived usefulness and design of RX500. Based on the findings of the initial data, course revisions were developed and implemented for the following semester’s RX500 course. In order to assess for potential changes in the perceived value …

Diversity In Times Of Austerity: Documenting Resistance In The Academy, David Moscowitz, Terri Jett, Terri Carney, Tamara Leech, Ann M. Savage Dec 2014

Diversity In Times Of Austerity: Documenting Resistance In The Academy, David Moscowitz, Terri Jett, Terri Carney, Tamara Leech, Ann M. Savage

Terri M. Carney

What happens to feminism in the university is parallel to what happens to feminism in other venues under economic restructuring: while the impoverished nation is forced to cut social services and thereby send women back to the hierarchy of the family, the academy likewise reduces its footprint in interdisciplinary structures and contains academic feminists back to the hierarchy of departments and disciplines. When the family and the department become powerful arbiters of cultural values, women and feminist academics by and large suffer: they either accept a diminished role or are pushed to compete in a system they recognize as antithetical …

"Research Tools": Tools For Supporting Research And Publications, Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nader Ale Ebrahim

“Research Tools” can be defined as vehicles that broadly facilitate research and related activities. “Research Tools” enable researchers to collect, organize, analyze, visualize and publicized research outputs. College-Prep-For-All Curriculum: Is It An Option For The North Bay?, Edward Kujawa, Madalienne Peters, Elizabeth Truesdell, Suzanne Roybal, Sarah Zykanov

Elizabeth Truesdell

The report concludes with suggestions for future research. Much of the current research details the successes of high school graduates in attending and completing post-secondary education, but there exists a need for longitudinal studies tracking students from an early age, through their elementary, middle and high school experience, and on to their college attendance and careers. In comparing schools that have implemented strides toward College-Prep-For-All policies versus those that remain status quo, what possible differences develop for students and the local economy? Furthermore, how can the North Bay glean aspects of successful college- and career-ready programs for their schools? The …

The New Australian Curriculum, Teachers And Change Fatigue, Jessica Dilkes, Christine Cunningham, Jan Gray Dec 2014

The New Australian Curriculum, Teachers And Change Fatigue, Jessica Dilkes, Christine Cunningham, Jan Gray

Dr. Christine Cunningham

A new national curriculum has recently been implemented across Australia. This paper reports on a case study of a regional Western Australia government school as they re-wrote and taught the phase one learning areas: maths, English, science and HASS. Results showed what it is like to work in an environment where continual change is not only expected, but also seen as best practice. Cynical, realistic and even enthusiastic teachers suffer change fatigue after years of rapid and continual curriculum change. The research traces back the reasons why teacher change fatigue might occur using Intuitive Inquiry (Anderson & Braud, 2011) as …

A Basic Qualitative Research Study Using A Constructivist Lens: Using Technologies To Infuse The Art Museum Into A High School Visual Arts Curriculum, Laura R. James Ms.

Laura R James

While attending a district professional development seminar, I became shockingly aware of the lack of technology teachers were using in their classrooms. I decided to set up virtual visits to museums to allow high school students to look at and talk about art as if they were on a field trip. As an art teacher, I am faced with a limited budget to support my art curriculum, and field trips have never really been an option. Art museums have proven to be a valuable resource for art education curriculum. I started to research literature to find studies in which others …

The investigation was designed to determine athletic
training educators (ATEs) instructional effectiveness in the didactic setting. The ATEs instructional effectiveness was assessed through interviews, field observations, and student evaluations. Through a qualitative research methodology, the researcher found athletic training students (ATSs) and ATEs perceived similar instructional techniques increased instructional effectiveness. No difference was found between different academic year of ATSs, and perceptions of instructional effectiveness. Findings suggested ATEs with a formalized pedagogic focused educational background, have increased knowledge of instructional effectiveness, and overall had higher student evaluation scores. Considering the future directions of athletic training, ATEs knowledge and application of …

Is School Reform Working?, Geoff N. Masters Nov 2014

Is School Reform Working?, Geoff N. Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

Reforming schools and improving student achievement levels are priorities for governments around the world. In Australia over the past decade, State, Territory and Commonwealth governments put considerable effort into improving the quality and equity of school education. These initiatives included the various National Partnership Programs.
The results of international surveys show that, despite reform efforts, there was little improvement in the performances of Australian students over the past decade. The period 2000 to 2012 saw a significant decline in the reading and mathematical literacy levels of Australian 15-year-olds as measured by PISA, and results from TIMSS confirmed a general lack …

Integration Of Ethics Across The Curriculum: From First Year Through Senior Seminar, Gail E. Gasparich, Larry Wimmers Nov 2014

Integration Of Ethics Across The Curriculum: From First Year Through Senior Seminar, Gail E. Gasparich, Larry Wimmers

Gail Gasparich

The Fisher College of Science and Mathematics (FCSM) at Towson University (TU) has integrated authentic research experiences throughout the curriculum from first year STEM courses through advanced upper-level classes and independent research. Our observation is that training in both responsible conduct of research (RCR) and bioethics throughout the curriculum was an effective strategy to advance the cognitive and psychosocial development of the students. As students enter TU they generally lack the experience and tools to assess their own competence, to apply ethical debates, to investigate scientific topics from an ethical perspective, or to integrate ethics into final conclusions. Student behavior …
