Examining Science Learning And Attitude By At-Risk Students After They Used A Multimedia-Enriched Problem-Based Learning Environment, Min Liu, Sa Liu, Zilong Pan, Wenting Zou, Chenglu Li

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Most of the previous problem-based learning (PBL) studies have been conducted with gifted or regular education students and have shown successes. However, little research on PBL exists for disadvantaged middle school students, especially students who are considered to be at risk of failing academically. In this study, we examined the use of a multimedia-enriched PBL science environment by at-risk middle school students. The results, using a mixed-methods design, showed that these students significantly improved their science knowledge and attitude toward science after they engaged in PBL learning. The main aim of the current research was to fill the absence of STEAM activities for primary school students in Turkey. Accordingly, a study in which STEAM activities were implemented was conducted with the primary school students. There were four activities during STEAM implementation. The activities were these: Students recognized circuit components of simple electric circuits, designed simple electric circuits using circuit components by the guidance of researchers, later designed an ecological village via STEAM using simple electric circuits, and presented their ecological village via STEAM. Interdisciplinary Summer Institute Offering Steam Activities For At-Risk Middle School Students, Katherine Zaromatidis, Kara Naidoo

A one-week long summer institute was designed for at-risk middle school students with two goals in mind: increasing interest in scientific inquiry through the use of artistic venues and exposing students to a higher education setting to motivate future goals of post-secondary education. Students were brought to the Iona College campus and were led through STEAM activities by a multi-disciplinary team of educators, who were assisted by a group of motivated undergraduate and graduate students. The summer institute culminated in a dramatic performance prepared and delivered by each of the students.

This article suggests the value in a broad view of STEAM beyond arts-integration, as well as the potential of design thinking for STEAM. Research evidence for the benefits of arts integration is mounting. The purpose of this study was to determine if integration of the arts was an effective strategy for teaching the water cycle to kindergarten students. The study included lessons that supported both a science and an engineering standard of the Next Generation Science Standards and national arts standards. The phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of children as they learned and demonstrated understanding through drawings, watercolor paintings, dramatization of a water cycle poem, and the invention and testing of a waterproof boot. This practical article features an arts-integrated science unit on fossils of the Burgess Shale for fourteen elementary/ middle school students at a weeklong summer day camp. The day camp had a theme of recycling, reduction and reuse; all of the fossil models had substantial recycled components to support this theme. In the lesson on which this practical article is based, third grade students constructed a “lift-the-flap” page to explore food webs on the prairie. The moveable papercraft focused student attention on prairie animals’ external structures and how the inferred functions of those structures could support further inferences about the animals’ diets. In general, most students made simple causal connections between an animal’s observable characteristics and the food it would probably eat. Some students were also able to make multi-agent connections to develop a more complex mental model of a food web. Ultimately, the lift-the flap project was engaging to students …

Arts integration has shown to enhance student comprehension, retention, and engagement, while connecting to rich science content. The integration of the Next Generation Science Standards and the National Arts Standards into a first grade lesson illustrated how the arts enhanced the students’ understandings of the sun’s apparent motion during the day, an idea that is difficult for many young children to grasp. งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างและศึกษาผลของการใช้ชุดการเรียนการสอนศิลปะการทอผ้าด้วยกี่แบบง่ายตามหลักสุขภาวะองค์รวมแนวพุทธเพื่อส่งเสริมความสามารถในการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียนที่มีความต้องการพิเศษ ใน 4 ด้าน ได้แก่ กายภาวนา ศีลภาวนา จิตตภาวนา และปัญญาภาวนา งานวิจัยนี้เป็นงานวิจัยกึ่งทดลองแบบกรณีศึกษา โดยศึกษาเด็กที่มีความต้องการพิเศษจำนวน 2 คน ซึ่งกำลังศึกษาในชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 5 โรงเรียนรุ่งอรุณ ปีการศึกษา 2553 ระยะเวลาในการทดลอง 12 สัปดาห์ ผู้ให้ข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมได้แก่ ครูการศึกษาพิเศษ ครูประจำชั้น และผู้ปกครอง จำนวน 5 คน เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยใช้ แบบประเมินความสามารถในการเรียนรู้ สมุดบันทึกรายละเอียดความคิดเห็นและข้อสังเกต สมุดบันทึกสรุปการเรียนรู้หลังการทำงานของนักเรียน ร่วมกับการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกรายบุคคล วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยการหาค่าร้อยละ และการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา ผลการวิจัย พบว่า ชุดการเรียนการสอนที่สร้างขึ้นประกอบ ขั้นตอนการสอน 4 ขั้น ได้แก่ ขั้นที่ 1 การทำกิจกรรมนำสมาธิแบบเคลื่อนไหว ขั้นที่ 2 การรับความรู้ ขั้นที่ 3 การฝึกฝนทักษะการทอผ้าและแก้ปัญหาที่พบ และขั้นที่ 4 การสรุปการเรียนรู้ หลังการใช้ชุดการเรียนการสอน พบว่า ความสามารถในการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียนกลุ่มอาการออทิสซึม ด้านจิตตภาวนาเป็นด้านที่พัฒนาได้ดีที่สุด ด้านศีลภาวนาเป็นด้านที่พัฒนาได้ยากที่สุด ส่วนนักเรียนที่มีความบกพร่องทางการเรียนรู้และสมาธิสั้น ด้านกายภาวนาเป็นด้านที่พัฒนาได้ดีที่สุด ด้านศีลภาวนาเป็นด้านที่พัฒนาได้ยากที่สุด การจัดการเรียนที่เหมาะสมและมีครูเข้าใจธรรมชาติการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียนเป็นปัจจัยภายนอกที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการเรียนรู้ของนักเรียนมากที่สุด

This article presents an argument for the integration of science into English courses in order to emphasize the usefulness of a Science, Technology, Education, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education. The idea for this approach arose after the implementation of a divisional initiative to create learning communities with a STEM cohort of students called Student Persistence and Retention via Curricula, Cohorts, and Centralization (SPARC³). There has been increased attention paid to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics also known as STEM. The focus on STEM has been both educational and occupational. Unfortunately, students with disabilities perform below their peers without disabilities in math and science. The authors discuss issues related to STEM and students with disabilities. These issues include (1) traditional views of STEM education, (2) the importance of STEM education, and (3) students with disabilities performance in STEM. The authors posit a framework for STEM education for students with disabilities and promote the incorporation of the arts to increase students’ STEM knowledge and achievement.

The paper presents a new initiative, EcoScience + Art, which blooms at George Mason University. The creator explains the background, history, and recent activities of the initiative, and also introduces an on-going special project called “The Rain Project”, a student participatory project to design, construct, and monitor a green infrastructure (i.e., floating wetland) for sustainable stormwater management on campus. The special project is geared to design and present a new paradigm to integrate college education, scholarship, and service.
