International Studies Poster Gallery: Sharing Undergraduate Research In The Time Of Covid-19, Erin M. Weber
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
While the Covid-19 pandemic has brought many challenges to information literacy instruction, it has also provided opportunities to find unique ways to use digital tools to showcase student learning. One such virtual learning opportunity was the International Studies Poster Gallery, a collaborative effort between the Paul Meek Library and College of Business and Global Affairs at the University of Tennessee at Martin. This Poster Gallery built on an in-person event from the previous year to move the student poster presentations into a virtual space. Senior students studying International Studies spent the semester researching their topics, and then presented their poster …

Utilizing The Mentor Badging System In Selectedworks To Facilitate The Faculty-Student Connection, Debra Rodensky, Kadie Mullins
Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019
Identifying available faculty research mentors with the right background has been a challenge for student researchers and the teams that support them for many years. To address this challenge, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) teamed up with the Scholarly Communications Team to introduce ‘Mentor Badging,’ creating a one-stop, searchable database of available mentors. Using a SelectedWorks Mentor Badge gives the OUR team, fellow faculty, and student researchers the opportunity to track available faculty mentors and the nature of the faculty research projects. In addition to providing a database, the ‘Mentor Badging’ program allows a direct email to be sent …

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
Despite considerable research describing the positive outcomes of including undergraduate students in research inquiry and investigations (Desai, Gatson, Stiles, Stewart, Laine, & Quick, 2008; Narayanan, 1999; Russell, Hancock, & McCullough, 2007), very little action is taken to include education majors in research endeavors. While universities are seeking to find ways to include students earlier and more often in research projects, students’ perspectives on conducting their own research is overwhelmingly overlooked. The purpose of this symposium is to introduce undergraduate research in education to GERA and to expose these students to conference presentations.
In recent years, the College of Education at …

Creating A Library Research Prize To Reward And Encourage Information Literacy, Ray Bailey, Helen Beaven
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Student research papers and other similar projects have traditionally been the “bread and butter” of academic libraries. Even in this digital age, the campus library remains the best place to find appropriate resources for these projects, as well as for getting necessary assistance with the scholarly research process. It is an ongoing challenge for academic libraries to make this fact known to the campus community, and to find novel ways to entice students to utilize the library and all it has to offer, rather than depending on less reliable sources. To encourage our students to perform academic research and writing …
