Childcare Organizations: A Qualitative Study On Childcare Leaders’ Perceptions Of The Elements That Promote The Work They Do In The Childcare Industry, Paula S. Polito Mrs.

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Research has often highlighted the positive effects of high-quality early care and education on children's development and the economy. However, the challenge of ensuring access to quality care for all children and understanding the perspectives of leaders doing crucial work on the ground remains. Given the strong associations between high-quality early childhood education, brain development, and positive economic outcomes for those who access high-quality care, my paper introduces a theory of change. This theory outlines a pathway from understanding the determinants of quality in childcare centers, as seen through the eyes of industry leaders, to the implementation of policy changes. …

Experiencing Positional Turbulence: High School Social Studies Teachers' Perceptions Of Instructional Leadership Support While Teaching During National Crises, Lynn M. Walters-Rauenhorst

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This research examined instructional leadership support of eight Louisiana high school social studies teachers as they experienced positional turbulence as a result of teaching to politically and socially aware students in a polarized political and social climate during the 2020-2021 school year. In recent years the American education system has been challenged in unprecedented ways. A global pandemic, renewed calls for social justice, and a highly polarized political climate created an extremely turbulent environment for all educators. Social studies teachers faced a unique set of challenges of integrating controversial current events into a high-stakes standards-based curriculum. Utilizing a conceptual framework …

Therapeutic Approaches To Working With Perinatal Loss Clients: A Grounded Theory Study, Heather H. Olivier May 2023

Therapeutic Approaches To Working With Perinatal Loss Clients: A Grounded Theory Study, Heather H. Olivier

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Perinatal loss (i.e., miscarriage, stillbirth, termination, and infant death) is commonly referred to in the literature as an invisible loss, non-loss, and even medical event. It is an ambiguous loss exhibiting the dialectical contradiction between the physical absence and psychological presence of the baby accompanied by disenfranchised grief, a reaction to a loss that is unacknowledged by society. Despite the likelihood of mental health clinicians working with clients who have experienced perinatal loss, there has yet to be a therapeutic model designed specifically for the unique grief and trauma reactions presented in this population. Existing grief models do not address …

A Cultural Legacy Of Resiliency: Black Male Teacher Retention In K-12 Classrooms, Mtichell Brookins May 2023

A Cultural Legacy Of Resiliency: Black Male Teacher Retention In K-12 Classrooms, Mtichell Brookins

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Only 18% of the nation's teaching force are minorities, with 2% being Black male teachers (National Center for Education Statistics, 2013). Black educators have the lowest retention rate and the highest departure rate (Snyder et al., 2014). There is limited empirical research that explores turnover patterns and organizational conditions that impact Black male educators’ decisions to remain in the field (Achinstein et al., 2010; Johnson et al., 2005; Kirby et al., 1999). As a result, this qualitative study is imperative in that it contributes to a body of literature that explores aspects and experiences of Black male teachers in K-12 …

Charter School Leaders’ Perceptions Of School Autonomy, Sharon L. Latten-Clark

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

This study explored school leaders and how they perceive and use autonomy to operate a school. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to better understand the lived experiences of school leaders and how they perceive and use their autonomy while operating a charter school in New Orleans, Louisiana. There is relatively little documentation on the perceptions of how school leaders feel they use and balance their autonomy when operating a charter school. This study builds upon the current and past research which regards principal autonomy as a driver of the success of charter schools and school quality. …

A Phenomenological Study Of Principals’ Perceptions Of Instructional Leadership In The Context Of Mandated Teacher Evaluation, Gabrielle P. Delatte Dec 2022

A Phenomenological Study Of Principals’ Perceptions Of Instructional Leadership In The Context Of Mandated Teacher Evaluation, Gabrielle P. Delatte

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The literature on instructional leadership includes the practices in which principals can engage (Stein & Nelson, 2003) and discusses how the principal’s leadership practices can be mediated by the teacher observation tool within the teacher evaluation system (Spillane, Halverson, & Diamond, 2001). However, the literature includes less about how and why leaders enact those instructional leadership practices (Spillane et al., 2001; Spillane, 2006) and how the teacher evaluation tool might or might not be influencing that how and why. The purpose of this qualitative study is to produce a description of how principals perceive the instructional leadership they provide teachers …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles In Blended Learning Environments, Sabrina E. Pence Dec 2022

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles In Blended Learning Environments, Sabrina E. Pence

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Schools are widely implementing blended learning, defined as a combination of face to face instruction and computer-assisted instruction, to increase student achievement. Given that the computer is taking on a component of instruction, there is some evidence that the role of the teacher is changing. The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of primary teachers about their role and possible role change in a blended learning environment. A qualitative study using transcendental phenomenology was conducted among a group of primary teachers who teach reading and math in grades K-4. Role theory was applied to illuminate whether the …

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the role internal communication played in shaping perceptions among stakeholders during a major crisis event happening on a university campus. The main question that this study sought to answer was: how did formal and informal communication during the COVID-19 pandemic affect the perception and adoption of changes related to the pandemic? This case study utilized interviews and document analysis to understand both the change process and its accompanying communication. Workplace Social Network Exchange was the guiding theoretical framework utilized to fully understand the professional lives of participants. Four major themes were identified …

A Quantitative Study On The Predictive Ability Of Mcat Scores On The Pre-Clinical Grade Point Averages Of Black Medical Students, Bennetta Horne

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive ability of MCAT scores on the pre-clinical grade point averages of Black medical students. Underrepresented in medicine students, including students of color and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds have often been prevented from pursuing medical education. This is due to the heavy reliance on numeric metrics including undergraduate grade point averages and MCAT scores for admissions decisions. (DeCarvalho et al., 2018; Linville, 2015; Reede, 1999). The research questions employed in this study focused on the relationship between MCAT scores and pre-clinical grades of Black students and the relationship between secondary …

2+2: Academic Success Predictors Of Two-Year Transfer Student Athletes, Shawn Jeffery Waltz

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the academic success of upper division, NCAA Division I, student athletes who begin their post-secondary academic career at a two-year institution. It is motivated by two research questions: 1) Are predictors of academic success similar for transfer and non-transfer student athletes? 2) Are predictors of academic success similar for transfer student athletes and transfer non-athlete students? Schlossberg’s (1981) theory of transition aided in conceptually framing these research questions.

Data for this study was gathered from three regionally accredited four-year universities located in southern Louisiana, all housing an NCAA Division I athletic program. Multilevel binomial logistic regression was …

Exploring The Effect Of Cte Coursework And Work Experience On Adolescent Career Readiness, Albion Sumrell

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Career readiness is an area of youth development that is often overlooked in secondary education. Preparing students for the professional world is especially important for high school students, who upon graduation, will have to decide to pursue postsecondary education or a career. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which involve teaching youth employable knowledge and skills, have been shown to assist students in transitioning more seamlessly from high school to college and careers. Work experiences, such as jobs and internships, have also been found to support adolescent career readiness. Currently, there is not a widely used quantitative measure for assessing …

Get Rich Or Die Tryin’: Media And Black Male Academic Identity Development, Kevin S. Mcclain Dec 2020

Get Rich Or Die Tryin’: Media And Black Male Academic Identity Development, Kevin S. Mcclain

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Black males encounter many difficulties in their educational journeys. Often these disadvantages can be linked to socioeconomic and environmental factors, which have consistently plagued the Black community. However, a relatively unexplored area of interest in higher education is the influence media representation has on the academic identity of Black males. Routinely shown in media outlets as athletes, entertainers, and criminals, Black males rarely view positive representations of themselves across media, thus limiting their academic pursuits. From this study, the researcher hoped to develop a fuller understanding on the influence between multimedia and Black male identity and academic success in higher …

From May To Shall: The Status Of Financial Education With The Passing Of Louisiana House Bill No. 401 In 2016, Leigh Erin J. Lundy

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Louisiana has a financial literacy problem. In 2016, 2018, and 2019, the Louisiana legislature responded to the financial illiteracy plaguing Louisiana by mandating personal financial management education. Though now required, no studies to date have examined if or to what extent personal financial management is being implemented across Louisiana.

Using a quantitative, non-experimental survey approach, I gathered and analyzed baseline data about Louisiana’s statewide implementation of personal financial management mandates in K-12 classrooms. Areas examined included the extent and frequency of implementation as well as educators’ readiness and perceptions about personal financial management education. In order to address the research …

The Career Advancement Narratives Of Black Women Presidents Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Tonia W. Horton Dec 2020

The Career Advancement Narratives Of Black Women Presidents Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcus), Tonia W. Horton

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this narrative study was to chronicle the career advancement journeys of the Black women who have been successful in ascending to the presidency in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Currently, only a small percentage of Black women serve as presidents of HBCUs. More specifically, there is literature suggesting that race and gender discrimination towards Black women is not confined by institution type, and that some of the same issues plaguing Black women in Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), exist within HBCUs as well (Bonner, 2001; Gasman, 2007; Kennedy, 2012). Although many studies exist relative to the career …

Theatre Arts Integration For Deeper Learning In The English-As-A-Foreign-Language Classroom, Andrew Zutell Dec 2020

Theatre Arts Integration For Deeper Learning In The English-As-A-Foreign-Language Classroom, Andrew Zutell

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This quasi-experimental case study examines the impact of theatre arts integration in an English-as-a foreign language (EFL) course in a competency-based international high school. Aiming to engage students in a process of deeper learning through drama, this study focuses on the domain of speaking and oral communicative competence. Although widely recognized as one of the most important college-and-career-readiness skills, oral communication is often overshadowed by high-stakes testing priorities such as reading and writing. In particular, many Chinese students of English struggle to achieve confident oral fluency despite years of study. This research was designed to investigate whether theatre arts integration …

Academic Executives’ Perceptions Of Team Relations And How These Relationships Impact Leadership And Institutions, Alex Ryan Arceneaux May 2020

Academic Executives’ Perceptions Of Team Relations And How These Relationships Impact Leadership And Institutions, Alex Ryan Arceneaux

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests there are many factors that contribute to the success or failure of university leaders. This study explores one of these factors—the relationships between the university president and their executive team and the group’s collective sociability—and uses social capital theory to suggest executive teams utilize relationships to influence leadership and the institution. The researcher employs a qualitative phenomenological approach using purposeful sampling to reveal how presidents and their executive teams perceive how their relational experiences impact the team and university. The research found that three themes emerged that broadly cover how organizational structure promotes or hinders relationship building, how …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of A Social Emotional Learning Program On Transient Students’ Competencies And Perceptions Of School Climate, Kevin W. Nanney May 2020

An Analysis Of The Impact Of A Social Emotional Learning Program On Transient Students’ Competencies And Perceptions Of School Climate, Kevin W. Nanney

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With the passing of the Every Student Succeeds Act (2016), schools are now expected to assess more than just the academic achievement of their student body. While states can choose how they meet this expectation, many choose to focus on school climate. This change is important because, while crime in schools has gone down, feelings of being unsafe or bullied have gone up. To support schools in both assessing and improving their student’s perception of safety, schools have the opportunity to use social and emotional learning to improve measures of school climate, which provides indicators of student perceptions of the …

Performance Funding And Stakeholder Perceptions: The Rise And Fall Of The Louisiana Grad Act, William D. Owens May 2020

Performance Funding And Stakeholder Perceptions: The Rise And Fall Of The Louisiana Grad Act, William D. Owens

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Performance based funding ideology creates a disconnect in communication ranging from state coordinating officials to academics responsible for the actual education to the students (Shin, 2010). The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze higher education stakeholders’ perceptions of performance funding by examining the development, design, implementation, and execution of the Louisiana Granting Resources and Autonomies for Diplomas Act (GRAD Act) and offer potential solutions based on the findings. A qualitative study using phenomenological methodology, and theoretical perspectives in the literature, was conducted amongst higher education participants involved with the GRAD Act at the state and campus levels in Louisiana. …

Essential Instructional Leadership Behaviors In High Performing, Economically Disadvantaged Schools: Potential Content For Site-Based Leaders’ Professional Development, Karen Brooks Favorite

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Professional development of site-based leadership has become a growing area of focus to effect change in schools (Houle, 2006; Barnes, Camburn, Sanders, & Sebastian, 2010; Spanneut, Tobin, & Ayers, 2012; Price, 2012; Prytula, Noonan, & Hellsten, 2013; Ganon-Shilon, & Schechter, 2017). Defining what to present in site-based leaders' professional development remains a concern (Oliver, 2005; Da'as, Schechter, & Qadach, 2018). The conceptual framework and subsequent three research questions of the study grew from the need for clarity of content for site-based leaders' professional development. Hallinger's (1982, 1990), Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) three dimensions, and its ten …

A Story-Centered Approach To Ap English Literature, Curriculum, And Assessment, Christopher L. Mccurry May 2020

A Story-Centered Approach To Ap English Literature, Curriculum, And Assessment, Christopher L. Mccurry

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Advanced Placement and Literature and Composition is the pinnacle of literary studies in the secondary school classroom. However, the content of the course and its primary mode of assessment equally damage the reputation of literary analysis as a purposeful academic field and threaten to further stigmatize the humanities in a moment when their usefulness is under scrutiny. Students should be shown how stories, and not literature, can be better appreciated in the AP literature classroom through a biocultural, and evolutionary approach to fiction and storytelling.

A Quantitative Case Study On Policy And Access At An Urban, Public University, Carlos A. Gooden

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how the use of standardized test scores may have had potential impacts on students of color at an urban public university. Historically, standardized test scores have disproportionately impacted students of color and other traditionally marginalized populations in education (Fair Test, 2018). The primary research question of this study addressed the outcomes associated with the heavy reliance on standardized test scores for admission at an urban, public institution. Additionally, the study examined the impact of admissions policies on race and access to higher education. The specific questions for the research included how admission …
