Nf01-454 Information About Foot And Mouth Disease For Nebraska Residents, David R. Smith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is an extremely contagious viral disease of cloven-hooved animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep, and deer. The disease is not commonly fatal, but causes extreme production losses in affected herds. Clinical signs of the disease include lameness, excessive salivation, reluctance to eat, abortion and blister-like erosions on the mouth and feet. Affected animals are debilitated and may not recover to their original production levels. The disease has long been recognized as one of the most economically devastating diseases of livestock.

The recent media attention on outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom and other livestock-related diseases is a reminder of the serious consequences of livestock diseases. Most diseases, including foot-and-mouth, cannot be transmitted from animals to humans, although a few diseases can affect both humans and animals. For your own health, it is important to use some simple sanitary practices when visiting places where livestock are housed or are being exhibited. Another concern is the spread of disease among animals. Even though many diseases do not present any direct risks to humans, human contact can help spread diseases to …

The recent media attention on outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom, pseudorabies in Nebraska and other livestock-related diseases reminds us of the costly consequences of livestock diseases. Most diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease and pseudorabies, cannot be transmitted from animals to humans. Even though these diseases do not present any direct risks to humans, human contact and attendance at fairs can help spread these diseases to other livestock herds. Livestock disease outbreaks can be economically devastating to your family, your community and the state, which derives a large portion of its income from the livestock industry. Some diseases, such …

Refers to size of pipe through which data can be sent. The greater the bandwidth, the greater the amount of data the line can handle. A full page of English text is about 16,000 bits. A fast modem can move about 15,000 bits in one second. Full-motion full-screen video would require roughly 10,000,000 bits per second, depending on compression. Technically, bandwidth is the width of a transmission line measured in Hertz.

For 45 minutes the woman discussed her husband's distress and her own feelings of inadequacy as she struggled in vain to find ways to help him. I listened closely and suggested she contact a good counselor in her hometown - one familiar with alcohol use - to work with both of them. The conversation wouldn't have been particularly remarkable, except that she and I had just met for the first time on a brief airplane flight. I sat down next to her, said How's life? and she told me. In great detail.

Nf01-487 Creating A Strong Family: Living In The Moment, John Defrain

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

As a young father, I learned to live in the moment. And to enjoy the moment. I think it was the time when the doctors thought I might have a brain tumor or an aneurysm. I'd been having headaches for several weeks, and they just wouldn't go away. As a young professor back then, I had been under considerable stress, or, perhaps, was creating considerable stress in my life by over-involving myself in what at the time seemed to be important activities.

Nf584 Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, Patrick E. Reece, Ivan G. Rush, David D. Baltensperger

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebFact addresses how to deal with an inadequate supply of forage for range beef cattle because of drought. Precipitation can be below average for much of the Nebraska Panhandle and adjoining areas for prolonged periods. Prolonged drought results in an inadequate supply of forage for hundreds of thousands of beef cattle on millions of acres of rangeland. While some variation occurs among ranches and among pastures within a given ranch, all rangeland vegetation in arid environments like western Nebraska can be moderately to severely damaged by drought stress and/or excessive grazing. Consequently, even if soil moisture is not limited …

G1430 Using The Sugar Roll Technique To Detect Varroa Mites In Honey Bee Colonies, Marion D. Ellis, Paula A. Acedo

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Description of a rapid and efficient technique for detecting and assessing varroa mite infestations using powdered sugar to dislodge mites from bees.

The varroa mite was first discovered in the United States in 1987. Globally, it is the most important pest of honey bees and it has caused extensive losses in feral and managed colonies. Once introduced, varroa mites have never been eradicated from any country or region, and beekeepers must adopt an integrated pest management strategy to protect their colonies. Early detection and assessment of infestation levels are important components of a varroa management plan. Since varroa mites feed …

Ec01-157 Precision Agriculture: Untangling The Gps Data String, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Most people associate precision farming or site-specific management with the global positioning system (GPS). It is used to locate the antenna of aGPS receiver on Earth. GPS provides the opportunity to record a set of geographic coordinates that specify a particular field location. Therefore, field data collected using GPS technology is georeferenced. Processing of these data is complicated, and software packages designed for precision farming applications have built-in capabilities to interpret the GPS receiver output. However, some simple operations can be performed using standard office software. In this case, it is necessary to know the basics behind GPS data. The …

Cc01-371 Estimated Irrigation Costs, 2001, Roger Selley

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This extension circular consists of a series of tables to help the operator estimate irrigation costs for the year 2001. Costs were calculated at four well depths for a gravity system which has an output of 1,000 gpm and irrigates 100 acres.

Irrigation costs were estimated with the aid of the Irrigation System Cost Analysis computer program. Energy prices used in the cost computations are those which were expected to occur in 2001. Irrigation equipment and well drilling costs were collected by a telephone survey from selected dealers. These costs do not include sales tax, personal property tax, insurnace, or …
