However, it can also be fruitful if one knows how to engage with international students in the learning and teaching environments, especially online. School-aged children constitute a significant portion of the large number of refugees who have resettled in Canada in recent years. Due to the lack of cross-cultural competencies, a social justice focus, and transformative leadership skills, Canadian schools are often challenged to effectively address refugee students’ socio-psychological problems. Moreover, educational literature and policy, which specifically target Canadian refugee students, are scarce. This study aims to explore the role of machine learning in a human learning process. In particular, we use word embedding and basic recurrent neural network methodologies in the teaching of terminology and specialized knowledge acquisition for translation students. Results show that word distribution in vector space trained on a relevant corpus can provide useful insights for learners to understand the terms and their associated concepts. We also build term recognition models for different levels of learners, which help instructors predict terms for these learners, while incorporating their previous knowledge and skills, so as to better communicate with the students …

Ontario's education system aims to improve children's literacy levels who hail from diverse backgrounds. Schools must tailor their program layout to their students’ unique needs. Immersion is one of them. As with submersion, instruction occurs in the second language (L2), but there are significant differences. ESL students experience linguistic barriers. According to Migration Matters (June 2017), by 2022, 78% of job openings will require some post-secondary training or university degree. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-related campus access restrictions on the teaching and learning of English as a second or additional language. A mixed-methods survey of ESL teachers, followed by optional structured interviews, was chosen as the research design. Results showed that the requirement to move instruction wholly, or partially, to an online format created emotional and cognitive hardships for students, but a rich professional-development opportunity for teachers as they dealt with the challenges of online instruction. This ongoing longitudinal case study explores five international graduate students’ perceptions of online learning, particularly concerning their transition from in-person to online courses as a product of COVID-19, in order to better understand the affordances and challenges associated with this medium of instruction. Thematic analysis is used to identify emerging trends from qualitative data collected from semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Findings indicate that (1) all the participants acknowledge and appreciate certain aspects of online learning, (2) some students are easily distracted and face a lack of motivation during synchronous classes, (3) English comprehension difficulties are enhanced for some individuals …

The objective of this paper is to understand how peer mentoring and exercises to encourage goal-setting and self-evaluation can support first year international graduate students to engage in Canadian universities’ online learning environment during COVID-19. Surveys, students’ work, and instructors’ reflections were used to inform the current study. Preliinary findings show that during COVID-19, online peer mentoring and exercises to encourage goal-setting and self-evaluation have been able to support international students’ behavioural, cognitive and emotional engagement in Canadian academic learning to a certain degree. With COVID-19 forcing post-secondary educational institutions to shift to open and online learning, understanding the needs of international students is more important than ever before. This paper will explore the connection between the promising practices for teaching online linguistically and culturally diverse international students with international student satisfaction and perceptions of learning. The study collected data through 15 individual interviews. Data analysis identified the teaching practices and individual characteristics that resonate with international student satisfaction and perceptions of learning. Recommendations for professional practice are discussed, along with potential areas for further research.
