Let's Take A Look Inside Discussion Boards, Annie Hoekman
Let's Take A Look Inside Discussion Boards, Annie Hoekman
SIDLIT Conference
This research examined the nature of the patterns of communication of discussion board users who were enrolled in undergraduate online courses. For purpose of analysis, this study used Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework (1992). Data were collected from discussion board posts of eight undergraduate online courses. An examination of these data was further informed by Garrison, Anderson, & Archer (1999) Community of Inquiry model. Using Garrison et al.’s ideas, the researcher described the nature of the interactions between students and faculty with respect to social, cognitive, and teaching presence in online discussion boards. The findings of this research …
It’S Almost Magic. Embedding Libguides In Canvas Courses Using Springshare’S Automagic Lti Tool, Alice Anderson
It’S Almost Magic. Embedding Libguides In Canvas Courses Using Springshare’S Automagic Lti Tool, Alice Anderson
SIDLIT Conference
An academic library may have hundreds of database subscriptions. Librarians create dozens of research guides to point the way to the best resources for subjects and classes. But manually creating links between appropriate library resources and the hundreds of college courses offered every semester is prohibitively labor intensive. The answer is to automate that linking process. Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) allows applications to interact with learning management systems (LMS) in defined ways. Springshare's LibApps Automagic LTI Tool makes getting the right library resources for each course into the hands of students easier. Discussion will center on how Kansas State University …

Streamline Quality Matters Review With Standardized Templates, Linda Merillat, Jeanne Catanzaro
Streamline Quality Matters Review With Standardized Templates, Linda Merillat, Jeanne Catanzaro
SIDLIT Conference
When an instructor is confronted with developing an online course based on Quality Matters it can daunting! The Quality Matters rubric is developed from an instructional designer’s perspective with underlying concepts unfamiliar to some faculty members. The School of Nursing at Washburn University is in the process of rolling out a fully online program for RN-to-BSN students. A strategic decision was made to design the courses to meet Quality Matters standards. An analysis of each Quality Matters benchmark showed that many of the features could be “canned” or developed for reuse. The reusable tools are a Course Template for D2L, …
Assessment: Anything, Anywhere, Anytime Using Jotform, Ayyoub Ajmi
Assessment: Anything, Anywhere, Anytime Using Jotform, Ayyoub Ajmi
SIDLIT Conference
One of the challenges of online education is the lack of real-time feedback. JotForm is a web-based form builder used to track and evaluate student progress through an entire class rather than at the end of it. Forms can be embedded into existing learning materials and learning management systems. I will demonstrate some JotForm features suitable for online education and assessment and share how the UMKC School of Law is using JotForm to assess, engage, and communicate with students. Hands-on training will be provided on how to build your first interactive forms.

Building The Knowledge Of Human Perception Into E-Learning, Shalin Hai-Jew
Building The Knowledge Of Human Perception Into E-Learning, Shalin Hai-Jew
SIDLIT Conference
Human perceptual systems—for sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell (and maybe even embodied proprioception)—may offer some guidelines for how to build multimedia e-learning: immersive 3D simulations, imagery for analysis, sight-and-sound distributions of information channels, and other applications. This will offer a brief overview of human perception (with a little human cognition thrown in) and some light applications to the design of e-learning.
