The Motivation Of Students Of Color For Pursuing Leadership Positions At Faith-Based Universities, Grant Burns, Jenny Elsey, David M. Johnstone

As faith-based universities increasingly diversify the culture of their student body, student leadership roles also diversify. While there is literature on barriers and challenges students of color experience in these roles, there is little to help understand their motivation in pursuing these roles. Using conversations, interviews, and surveys this research was conducted to start such a conversation. The researchers' goal was to go beyond conventional wisdom and begin gathering data reflecting the experiences of students of color on our campuses. While compensation is definitely a motivation, this research suggested there might be a variety of reasons to pursue these roles.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is wrapped in the notion of God's "will be[ing] done on earth as it is in heaven" (Matt. 6:10 NIV). The good in the good news (or gospel) looks a little different for every age, culture, and context. Unlike the Eastern no-tion of karma, or what goes around comes around, the Christian gospel centers on God's grace being offered to those who accept Jesus's kindness and authority. God extends grace so that men and women do not receive what they deserve; therefore, what goes around does not come around. Many find this to be good …

When Conflict Crosses Cultural Lines: How Culture Informs Conflict, Joel Perez, David M. Johnstone

Diverse cultural experience provides tremendous educational value. At the same time, it presents the possibility for increased misunderstanding and conflict. While conflict can happen with students of the same background, cross-cultural dynamics tend to add complexities to tension. Using a tool such as the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory, we have helped college student leaders build stronger teams, with a better and deeper ability to navigate, mediate and mitigate conflict among their leadership teams and peers .

Colleges routinely send teams across cultural and economic lines to serve other communities. The returning from any cross-cultural experience is laced with dissonance. This article hopes to provide paradigms to assist making these trips a more significant educational experience. Using Mannoia 's description of how learning takes place, we perceive that all aspects of the educational experience can become tools for creating learning. Short-term cross-cultural trips have the potential for being one of the most formative pedagogical experiences of a student's college career. The tools presented here should assist them to transform the event into a significant l(fe experience.
