Moving Beyond The College-Preparatory High School Model To A College-Going Culture In Urban Catholic High Schools, Ursula S. Aldana
Moving Beyond The College-Preparatory High School Model To A College-Going Culture In Urban Catholic High Schools, Ursula S. Aldana
Journal of Catholic Education
A college-going culture has been found to improve academic outcomes for underrepresented high school students (Allen, Kimura-Walsh, & Griffin, 2009; Stanton-Salazar, 2010). The research on Catholic high schools shows their college-preparatory environment ability to produce successful outcomes for African-American and Latino students (Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). This study examines two urban Catholic high schools and how they construct opportunities for low-income Latino and African-American male students. The year-long study draws from 1) ethnographic field notes; 2) interviews with students and staff; 3) survey and 4) student data. Data suggests that although both schools focused on preparing students for college, …
Culturally Responsive Caring And Expectations For Academic Achievement In A Catholic School, Christian Dallavis
Culturally Responsive Caring And Expectations For Academic Achievement In A Catholic School, Christian Dallavis
Journal of Catholic Education
This article draws from a larger dissertation study that applied ethnographic and historical research methods to explore the intersection of culturally responsive pedagogy and Catholic schooling in immigrant communities. In particular, this article presents qualitative data analysis to describe student achievement expectations at a contemporary urban Catholic elementary school. By examining teacher, student, and parent perspectives on academic achievement, the article explores the degree to which the caring demonstrated at the school is/is not consistent with a notion of “culturally responsive caring” in the scholarly literature surrounding theories of culturally responsive pedagogy.
Transforming Catholic Education Through Research: The American Educational Research Association Catholic Education Special Interest Group, Shane Martin
Journal of Catholic Education
Catholic schools in the United States and abroad face numerous financial, cultural, and structural challenges due to contemporary education policies and economic trends. Within this climate, research about Catholic education is often conducted and leveraged in efforts to serve schools’ most immediate needs. To be certain, research aimed at finding solutions to pressing problems is important—indeed, essential—to Catholic schools’ survival. However, it is also important that research on Catholic education connect to larger questions, issues, and discourses in education—both private and public—in order to contribute important insights and bring otherwise marginalized voices to bear in contemporary educational debates.
Tensions Between Catholic Identity And Academic Achievement At An Urban Catholic High School, Carrie Fuller, Lauri Johnson
Tensions Between Catholic Identity And Academic Achievement At An Urban Catholic High School, Carrie Fuller, Lauri Johnson
Journal of Catholic Education
Through a secondary analysis of a case study on successful school leadership, this study inquired into the lived experiences and understandings of Catholic identity from the perspectives of administrators, faculty, staff, and students at one urban Catholic school in the northeastern United States. Participants generally spoke about Catholic identity in terms of its explicit or implicit nature. Specifically, explicit Catholic identity relating to campus ministry, faith formation of students, and community service were noted to be areas for improvement. The analysis showed that tensions concerning the school’s Catholic identity were sidelined in the pursuit of academic excellence as measured by …
Forming The Whole Disciple: A Guide To Crafting A Truly Holistic Catholic Religious Education, Patrick R. Manning
Forming The Whole Disciple: A Guide To Crafting A Truly Holistic Catholic Religious Education, Patrick R. Manning
Journal of Catholic Education
It is a commonplace for Catholic schools to claim that they educate the “whole” person in the faith, yet exactly what this means and how to accomplish it is harder to say. Though these matters of holistic formation and Catholic identity are always important, they are especially so at present given ongoing efforts to implement the U.S. bishops’ Framework for a high school religion curriculum. With these concerns in mind, this article aims to offer a traditionally-grounded, actionable answer to the questions, ‘Whom do we hope our students will become, and how do we help them towards that goal?’ The …
The Catholic School As A Courtyard Of The Gentiles, Leonardo Franchi
The Catholic School As A Courtyard Of The Gentiles, Leonardo Franchi
Journal of Catholic Education
The setting up of the Courtyard of the Gentiles by Pope Benedict XVI has provided the Catholic Church with an official forum for dialogue with atheists. The intellectual energy surrounding this initiative can be harnessed to focus on how the contemporary Catholic school addressed its responsibilities to the Catholic community while offering a good education to people of other religious traditions. The Courtyard initiative is an opportunity for the Catholic educational community to re-consider its purpose as an ecclesial agent in a plural society. This article argues that the distinctive content and pedagogy it employs in this endeavor is a …

The Development Of Faith Leadership In Novice Principals, Barbara Stacy Rieckhoff
Journal of Catholic Education
This article describes the Catholic School Principal Support Program (CSPSP), a mentoring program for first and second-year Catholic school principals in a large urban diocese, and identifies key challenges, impacts and influences on decision-making. Ten school leaders describe their work and provide the lens by which they reflect on their role as faith leaders. The challenges these principals face along with the various roles they play are discussed. Based on the perceptions and insights of their roles as faith leaders and how that role is situated within other leadership roles, this study seeks to better understand how the faith leadership …
Recovering The Social Dimension Of Reflection, Martin Thomas Connell
Recovering The Social Dimension Of Reflection, Martin Thomas Connell
Journal of Catholic Education
Upon its publication in 1983, Schön’s The reflective practitioner became almost instantly influential in the design of teacher education programs in North America. Within eight years of its publication, it was nearly impossible to find a teacher educator not emphasizing the importance of reflection (Erlandson, 2007; Zeichner & Tabachinick, 1981). Despite a paucity of research establishing its benefits, the practice continues to play an important role in teacher education programs, including programs for preservice teacher education located at Catholic colleges and universities. After describing how reflection in teacher education is popularly conceived and after reviewing critiques of the practice as …

Supporting Catholic Education Through Effective School/University Partnerships: Two Models From The 2012 Catholic Higher Education Collaborative Conference, William A. Henk, Jennifer Maney, Kevin Baxter, Frank Montejano
Journal of Catholic Education
The following article contains two essays based on presentations to the 2012 CHEC conference on Catholic school governance held at Marquette University in October 2012. The essays outline two models of deep collaboration between Catholic institutions of higher education and Catholic K-12 schools designed to support and foster improvements in Catholic education. The first essay, “Higher Education Working Together to Help Catholic Schools: The Greater Milwaukee Catholic Education Consortium,” written by William A. Henk and Jennifer A. Maney, provides an overview of the Greater Milwaukee Catholic Education Consortium (GMCEC), an ongoing collaborative effort between the archdiocese of Milwaukee and the …

National Catholic School Standards: Focus On Governance And Leadership, Lorraine Ozar, Patricia Weitzel-O'Neill
Journal of Catholic Education
The recently published National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS) (Ozar & Weitzel-O’Neill, 2012) provides Catholic school educators and stakeholders with research-based criteria for operating a mission-driven, program-effective, well-managed, responsibly governed Catholic school. The standards serve as the framework within which discussion of Catholic school governance and leadership must now take place.

"A New Model Of Sponsorship And Collaboration": The University Of Notre Dame Ace Academies, Christian Dallavis, Andrea Cisneros
Journal of Catholic Education
This article describes the Notre Dame ACE Academies initiative, a university-school partnership program that provides comprehensive support to schools through a unique governance structure. The authors describe how the university’s experience of an earlier partnership initiative informed the development of the Notre Dame ACE Academies model and the rationale for establishing of a new governance model for the program. ACE developed a framework for partnership and collaboration designed to create and sustain a strong Catholic school culture with high academic standards. The program provides resources and formation to support principal and teacher efforts to enhance academic achievement, and the program …
Urban Catholic Elementary Schools: What Are The Governance Models?, Erik P. Goldschmidt, Mary E. Walsh
Urban Catholic Elementary Schools: What Are The Governance Models?, Erik P. Goldschmidt, Mary E. Walsh
Journal of Catholic Education
The closure of nearly half of Catholic elementary schools in the United States since the 1960s has led to the development of many innovative initiatives to stabilize, strengthen, and sustain urban Catholic elementary education. Improving school governance models has been a common agenda of these efforts. This study examined the governance models in use by urban Catholic elementary schools across the United States. Seven major governance models for urban Catholic elementary schools were identified and studied using structured interviews and document analysis. An eighth model, faith-inspired charter schools, is presented as one alternative to a Catholic school. The variety of …

Contemplative Leadership Practice: The Influences Of Character On Catholic School Leadership, Merylann "Mimi" J. Schuttloffel
Contemplative Leadership Practice: The Influences Of Character On Catholic School Leadership, Merylann "Mimi" J. Schuttloffel
Journal of Catholic Education
There is a clear understanding that leaders of faith-based educational institutions shape the school community’s culture in ways that assist in faith formation. This implicit and explicit focus on faith formation and an alignment with the broader mission of the Catholic Church is foundational to contemplative leadership (Schuttloffel, 1999, 2008). Contemplative leadership practice presumes that a leader’s character, shaped by her/his communities, life stories, and virtues, is a necessary quality for making decisions that contribute to a school’s Catholic identity. Using qualitative research methods, this study explores leadership practice within Catholic schools in Australia, England, and the Netherlands, in order …
Nostra Aetate And The Religious Literacy Of Catholic Students, Cyndi Nienhaus Csa
Nostra Aetate And The Religious Literacy Of Catholic Students, Cyndi Nienhaus Csa
Journal of Catholic Education
In this article, I take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council to reassess one of its major products, the declaration Nostra Aetate (“In Our Time”). Following a brief introduction to Nostra Aetate, I describe my experience teaching an undergraduate course on Jewish-Christian Relations built around the document’s recommendations for interfaith dialogue. Through open dialogue about religious beliefs, prejudices, and stereotypes, students made great strides in developing religious literacy, defined by Prothero (2007) as “the ability to understand and use in one’s day-to-day life the basic building blocks of religious traditions” (p. 14). I explore the …

Catholic School Principals: Promoting Student Leadership, Shane D. Lavery, Gregory S. C. Hine
Journal of Catholic Education
Adolescents possess enormous leadership potential. They are tomorrow’s leaders in the workplace, the family, the community, and in government. Increasingly, schools have taken on the significant responsibility of nurturing leadership in young people. Schools are, as van Linden and Fertman (1998) have noted, “hotbeds of leadership development” (p. 224). This article explores the role and function of the secondary school principal in developing student leadership. Specifically, eight principals of secondary schools in Perth, Western Australia were interviewed about their vision of student leadership and what they saw their role as in promoting student leadership at their schools. As a prelude, …
Reaching The Youngest Hearts And Minds: Interviews With Diocesan Leaders Regarding Catholic Early Childhood Education, James M. Frabutt, Rachel Waldron
Reaching The Youngest Hearts And Minds: Interviews With Diocesan Leaders Regarding Catholic Early Childhood Education, James M. Frabutt, Rachel Waldron
Journal of Catholic Education
Early childhood is a critically formative stage of human development and the educational experiences of children at this young age impact their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical competencies. In the U.S., early childhood education has grown dramatically since the 1960s, both in federal and state dollars invested and in terms of overall enrollment. However, despite what is known about early childhood education in general, the picture of whether and how the Catholic education sector—particularly diocesan schools and parishes—is serving early childhood needs remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to begin mapping the landscape of Catholic early childhood …
